Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2024
Published: Feb. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Huge upgrade on D, big gamble in goal but I think an upgrade. Guentzel would be a great linemate for Larkin/Raymond. I'm sure all the Cal/Pitt fans will scream underpayments but Hanifan and Guentzal are rentals and I think the Andersson compensation is fair.
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Berggren, Jonatan
  2. Fabbri, Robby
  3. Gostisbehere, Shayne ($2,000,000 retained)
  4. Holl, Justin ($1,000,000 retained)
  5. Johansson, Albert
  6. Savage, Redmond [Reserve List]
  7. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
  8. 2025 1st round pick (DET)
  9. 2026 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Here's my logic: Berggren/Johansson/Ghost/3rd for Andersson. Retained Ghost can probably be flipped for a 2nd/3rd by Cal, so they're getting a 2nd, 3rd, a young NHLer and good D prospect. Fabbri is probably worth a 3rd/4th so a semi-serviceable, retained Holl at $2.4M is a wash IMO. 1st/2nd/Savage for Hanifin seems fine, maybe a different prospect?
2.
DET
  1. Guentzel, Jake ($2,000,000 retained)
PIT
  1. Buchelnikov, Dmitri [Reserve List]
  2. Söderblom, Elmer
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (DET)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
2 good prospects, 2 picks.
3.
DET
  1. Kähkönen, Kaapo
  2. 2024 5th round pick (PIT)
SJS
  1. Määttä, Olli
  2. Reimer, James
  3. 2025 7th round pick (STL)

That’s a. Easy no from the sharks! Another older 3rd pair LD, an old washed up goalie and a 7th for Kahkonen and a 5th is totally laughable.

No reason for the Wings to do that. Third in the East in GFPG but only plus 15 in goal differential. Just let it ride and if anything sell on Fabbri or if someone is brave enough Maata or Holl

Detroit passes, We can't afford Rasmus Anderson, Noah Hanifin and Jake Guentzel long term. Plus afford to give Lucas Raymond and Mortitz Seider big raises on top.

Which part? Guentzal would def be a luxury but their goals against sucks, bottom third in the league so way better (and younger) D plus a probably better goalie?

They can likely flip Maata, but exactly how good do you think Kahkonen is? All his numbers are brutal (yes behind a terrible team) but how much do you think he'll get in a trade?

He’s top 15 in goals saved above expected this year! He’s been playing really god for us so while we may not get a lot there is zero incentive to move him for less that a 3rd. Honestly would prefer to resign him.

That practically empties the cupboard and the Wings have no guarantee that Guentzel, Kahkonen or Hanafin even re-sign with the Wings. So Wings get Rasmus Andersson and a 5th for 6 draft picks, 5 prospects and 5 current roster players.

Calgary can get better trading them separately, quality over quantity.

Just messing w/ the following year numbers they could sign their RFAs and sign one of Hanifan or Guentzal (at $7M per) I think that's pretty good. Keep in mind the current roster players they'd be trading aren't great, i.e. Holl/Fabbri/Reimer etc. If Kahkonen turned out to be good and Husso can never get right they can sign KK and buy out Husso.

Calgary doesn't want your depth pieces for two top pairing defenders. The nerve to not even offer up a top five prospect in your pool.

Not even close. Video game offers won't work.

Indeed I did. tears of joy

The value stinks. Adding a bunch of pieces that have zero worth to Calgary doesn't help.

You are probably close(ish) but still short on Hanifin's value but really missed the mark on Andersson.

So the fact that you know we would scream underpayment just shows you know it is too and are just trying to cope or something. If you want Jake unretained, you would start with what Lindholm returned and go from there. Add retention and it’s way more.

I meant to delete the retention anyway, so you can have that back. I was going to do a couple of other things and then didn't. As far as the trade value, there is no way you're getting as much as what Cal got for Lindholm. 1 he's a center, 2 it was a month more of the season, and 3 he was healthy. The team that gets Guentzel is going to have to hope he gets back to 100% with a month-ish to go in the season and he won't be back (from what I've heard) before the trade deadline, so that leap of faith is going to cost value for the Pens.

These are hands down the most annoying comments. One day, I hope to achieve as much as you have as a pretend GM and only then will I add commentary to the unwashed masses feeble attempts at GM-ery. If you have actual commentary I'd love to hear it, but keep your internet-person nonsense to yourself. 'sigh'

1st of all, Jake is currently better than Lindholm, that’s why that would be the starting point. 2nd, the pens aren’t selling, that’s why it would still cost at least the same. 3rd the trade deadline is March 8th and Jake was out 4 weeks which puts his return around March 10th. So he’d return just after the deadline. So no it’s not going to cost the pens lol.

The lindholm trade is the floor for a Jake trade . Jake is a better player and a proven playoff performer . It would cost a 1st and a very good prospect to get him without retention . Add another pick if you want retention (pick depends on quality of the prospect included)

That offer for Guentzel is easily beat by every playoff contender. If Detroit wants him, it would cost a 1st, Elmer Soderblom, Jonathan Bergren and like a 2nd. TBH I simply don't think Guentzel is a match for Detroit as I doubt detroit is really willing to move the pieces the pens would really want in a trade package. I would think Dubas would be gunning for a Marco Kasper in a deal for Guentzel.
