Liljigren is garbage? Leafs lose this trade in the long-term bud. And he's easily worth a late 1st rounder, which seems to be the asking price for Tanev. The rest of the package should be more than enough for the retention and Kylington, though I'm high on him, shouldn't take much to acquire after being out of the league for so long.

Lol! Why not? He's a UFA. What do you possible gain by keeping him?

We keep a good player with a ceiling he hasn't reached yet. He has publicly stated his loyalty is with the flames and both team and player see long-term fits

Especially when the offer is scraps

Liljegren is the only good thing there but you want 2 players who are better than him in this trade, both retained. He's also almost 25 and has not played like he is worth a 1st this season. He's not a prospect anymore, I doubt anyone would give a 1st for him

On the surface you might be right, but Kylington is likely to re-sign in Calgary as he's been very outspoken about being loyal to teh team because of the way they stood by him during his mental health crisis. So I actually think both teams lose this trade long-term

What makes Liljegren have any value!? He’s supposed to be an offensive d-man but doesn’t put up much offence. He’s questionable in his own end and not trusted to play in the playoffs, losing his spot to an old slow AHL goon in Luke Schenn. He’s a 3rd Pairing D-man maybe worth a late 2nd to mid-3rd RD Pick IF TOR’s lucky. I wouldn’t offer any more than we received for Zadorov = 3rd + 5th personally

You clearly don’t know anything about Kylington or his situation, but he’s not going anywhere any time soon

I'd say Lilly and a third for Tanev and Pysyk might make both fan bases scream, so I'm trying to speak it into existence (also don't think it'd be bad for either of them).

Kylington being better than Lily might be pushing it a tad. Besides the fact he's a younger non-UFA, Lily has played top-pair minutes during this Leafs streak and I'm extremely reluctant to trade him. Only reason I'd entertain moving him is because we have Niemela in our system. He's on a similar trajectory to Rasmus Andersson, and could very well end up a slightly lesser version of him. With the way I've seen your fanbase value Andersson, this trade should be a landslide in your favor.

Let’s just stick to the facts then: Liljegren isn’t good enough to be anything more then a 3rd Pairing D-Man and he hasn’t been trusted to play in all situations, especially during the Playoffs, hence why TOR is constantly and desperately looking for another RD’s all the time (Timmins, Schenn and then Klingberg) and Kylington is committed to staying in CGY, so he isn’t available

Kylington is easily better then Liljegren and Niemela is too small for the North American Game and won’t fair well in the NHL

This seems like a unanimous opinion with Flames fanbase. However, if he's really that inclined to sign with the Flames then why not trade him and make it a a win-win scenario. Let him try and win a Cup with his good buddy Nylander and then he can sign with the Flames in the offseason.

the guy just returned from 1.5 years away due to his mental health. I'm mot sure trading him and uprooting his life is a good idea. Toronto would also be the worst place for him to go, you know someone like Steve Simmons would do his best to tell the world all the details of Kylington's mental health

Ok a few points here
1. Niemela isn't NHL ready, probably won't be next year either and will take time to develop into a top 4 defenseman on the 3rd pair first if he even makes it to that. Saying Liljegren is expendable because of him is asinine.
2. Liljegren and Andersson are nothing alike. Andersson is much more similar in style and skill to Rielly. Offensive defenseman who isn't a complete liability defensively. Liljegren will mac out as a 2nd pairing caliber guy if he reaches that but at age 24 (almost 25) he is currently a 3rd pairing caliber defenseman with sheltered minutes. At the same age Andersson was playing a 1st pairing role consistently against top competition all year.

Don't get me wrong, I like Liljegren, but these comparisons to Andersson that Leafs fans keep making are laughable at best

The guy took 1.5 years off to mourn and come to terms with the suicide of his best friend (at least that's the rumour on why he was absent). That kind of thing can really leave a toll on someone mentally. However through that entire time Calgary stuck with him and supported him all the way. He was and still is an important player to the Flames roster, is well liked by his teammates, and is a fan favourite. However, due to that missed time his actual trade value is likely quite low, and with a near approaching deadline there simply isn't enough time for him to regain that lost trade value. So since Calgary is already going to be moving out 2 top 4 defensemen in Hanifin and Tanev there will be a large hole on Calgary's blue line. Moving out Kylington too would make that hole even more drastic. Keeping him would cushion the loss of the other 2 while also giving him a chance to prove himself again.

As for re-signing him, outside of Treliving I doubt there is anyone that would take much of a risk on him at all in free agency. Calgary is probably the only team that would offer him more than league minimum next year. Plus it's a place he's familiar with

Besides Niemela, I'd strongly wager that Tanev signs with the Leafs in 24-25. And It's evident you know very little about Niemela. He's already played a few years pro going back to Liiga and is closer than you think to cracking a spot and I'm not alone in that thought process: https://theathletic.com/5252959/2024/02/06/maple-leafs-prospect-topi-niemela/

Andersson and Rielly is an unexpected but interesting comparison. Lily, for the most part, is actually a better defender than both and may just be some PP time away from producing in the same ball park as Andersson.

I admit, I'm not familiar with Andersson's exact usage at the time, but their 1st full seasons (same age) are actually very similar statistically. Flames had Giordano (Norris), Brodie, Hanifin and Hamonic, so I'd imagine as a rookie, he played a fair bit of sheltered minutes, as did Lily. Now, Andersson without question is currently way better - he's stronger, battles harder and is faster, but Lily has shown some flashes to date and wouldn't be surprised if he eventually solidifies himself as a top 4 guy.

Lily - 2021-22 61 games 5G 18A 23P +15
Ras - 2018-19 79 games 2G 17A 19P +17
