Sharks are going to want more than that for a guy making $8m to put up 30 points.

Bet if you threw in Beaucage or Polin you'd get the full $2,912,500 retention. (Olausson is too much, of course.)

MTL can get a pick for a 50% retained Allen.

Is he to much to ask for? Didn’t he just get waived?

Edit: no wrong guy

The Ducks trade is the only one that is realistic.

Even if they couldn't, they still wouldn't do that as that retention is worth more to them than not having a 3 goalie rotation.

Realistic things to consider:

1. Irrespective of player value, retention has a set cost that most GMs go by.
2. Any trade of a player with retention needs to be more advantageous than a buyout.

I still think the Sharks are going to want a bit more than that (probably closer to a 2nd), but while you said is technically correct, the Predators are already paying half his cap hit so a team taking him on would be getting a $4m cap hit player.

They have to pay his full contract?

Value is about right on the Sharks trade but whether SJ accepts is another matter. Allen is too expensive for the Avs going forward cap-wise even with retention and should be a no. The Rico trade is probably about right but a low end prospect or pick probably gets the full 50% retention. Still don't believe Rico is the answer however.

Yeah I think a guy I would rather go after looking at it is jones. Do you have any other ideas for the 2C?

Gotta be honest, totally forgot it was only $4m. A 3rd might be enough then, especially if they move a bunch of guys at the deadline.

There aren't too many potential answers out there for the Avs (and other teams looking for a 2C which is part of the issue). Novak would still be my top target. Frost second. The two 'ideals' - Danault or JEE would require egregious overpays. They may just stand pat though and try to solve it temporarily internally. Kovalenko is expected over late in the season and is currently being tried at C in the KHL so I guess he could be a possibility. That's a gamble though. Had Nuke not gone into the PAP, I'd have talked to him about trying C too had I been in Bednar's shoes.
