1: Calgary only made that trade because Tkachuk refused to sign there, not because they couldn't afford his salary demands.
2: Calgary got two players on the cusp of free agency that they had to sign to mega deals or loose to free agency, both of whom were on the cusp of 30 at time of signing. They didn't receive players in the trade, they received a few weeks exclusive negotiating rights with some UFAs.
3: Pick 3 and pick 30 are wildly different in value.
But sure, tell me that I'm the one who's out to lunch. Vancouver can want everything under the sun, doesn't mean they'll get it, or anyone else will be dumb enough to agree to the trade.
I agree the ask of McT + Minty + 3OA is a lot
I don’t think I agree there’s really a leverage difference here between the Tkachuk and Pettersson comparable. Whether it’s money or playing in CAN, I’m not sure why that would matter. If anything, CGY probably had less leverage
Comparing value:
- Zegras in this year < Hub after 115pts (you may argue this, but 115 is bananas. We were all so hot on Hub)
- 3OA > Weegar (this doesn’t feel close or up for debate)
- Lacombe = 1st 3 years out (being 3 years out at the time puts a serious damper on its value and Lacombe is playing well for us)
Pettersson > Tkachuk (not by a huge margin, but Tkachuk only had the 1 dominant season at the time. Pettersson has totally proven he’s no fluke (which somehow was still a little bit debatable for Tkachuk)
TLDR, this proposed offer feels decent. Maybe it’s slightly off, but to assume Z could be upgraded to McT and Lacombe into Minty feels unrealistic
