Next Year - Huge off season

Created by: Letsgosharks
Team: 2024-25 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What could next year look like? (For fun)

I personally am behind getting the youth into the lineup to help push the rebuild forward by getting them some pro experience. At least Smith/Celibrini have already dominated the college level. I also think it is time for Bords and Gushchin to get a full time opportunity.

The sharks land their first 1OA pick and decide to make a couple splashes this off season on potential top - top 4 - pairing defensemen and a really solid RW for the future. Buy Roy (RD), young enough to make an impact for a few years, to help replace Ferraro. Buy another young RD in Casey to really establish a potential future lethal D core.

Let’s say Guschin and Bordeleau made their way back into the roster towards the end of the 23-24 season and make the starting roster at the start of the 24-25. Resign Kahkonen and stick with the Blackwood - Kahkonen tandem for a few seasons. Let's also say that Couture comes back well enough to be a full time 3C - if not this could look very different.

Grier decides to not go after too many bad long term contracts and only goes after Goodrow's who has a reunion with San Jose and becomes a morale guy.

This is a very, very young team and assume we probably land another top 5 pick this season as well.

    1. Necas, Martin [RFA Rights]
    2. 2024 6th round pick (CAR)
    Additional Details:
The Sharks go after another big chip in Martin Necas. Another player who will make an impact right away and is young enough to do so for a long time.

The sharks send back Ferraro who the canes have had interest in before, a 1st (assume 28OA), and Kunin. Canes receive a dman who can log some serious minutes who is worth a first and another grind type player who I think could flourish in Rod's system.

    1. Byram, Bowen
    2. Johansen, Ryan
    Additional Details:
Give Byram the chance to be a true top pairing defenseman, High risk but complacency does not get you anywhere in today's NHL.

Chmelevski - 55points in 65 KHL games, but does not want to sign with San Jose, Avs can give him a chance - let's say his worth is about a 3rd or maybe a late 2nd if we are lucky. Benning as a depth replacement for Byram.

Take on Johansen's Salary to even out the deal.
    COL
    1. Benning, Matthew

    SJS
    1. Casey, Seamus [Reserve List]
    Additional Details:
Let’s assume pick is 14OA and Parekh and Levshunov are off the board.

The sharks make another high risk splash on Seamas Casey. I don’t know if the devils want to trade him, however I have seen him on a couple ACGMs.

I think this could make sense because let’s be real. Where does he slot in? With Hughes, Nemec, Hamilton, and more I just don’t see a spot for him, similarly to Byram on Colorado.

I also think they will not have the cap to commit to him long term.

San Jose wants an RD prospect who can slot in right away and begin their pro career. The devils can use this pick to flip it or to draft someone that fits their system/lineup more, can also use Sturm in a 4c/3c position as I saw on a board someone wanted to target him.

Ferraro is cool but there isnt a roster upgrade worth moving Necas for unless someone wanted Kunin and the Rangers pick in a flip for a roster upgrade

At 14th overall I think that would be very tempting for Casey depending on what the long term plan on D is.

Would you really need an upgraded Wing though? Considering you have Jarvy, Teuvo, Svech, and more. I read somewhere that Necas does not fit great with the Canes, but that could have been a bad article lol

I just think it makes sense considering what their d core looks like right now, even if you guys did not trade Casey and he began to flourish there, I don't see how you would be able to pay him long term anyway

My plan would be to have casey in the AHL next year and then trade 1 of Hamilton or Marino to clear space, both salary and roster, for the year after that, or potentially play casey at 3LD (he played LD for the US development team).

I think this would have to be a tempting one if we can either trade the pick along or draft a decent enough center prospect

Canes will probably be willing to send a 1st for Ferraro, but I don’t think the Sharks have anything they would be willing to trade that would be worth giving up Necas.

Even if the Sharks do end up with 1OA, it's unlikely Celebrini would leave school yet. Same with Smith.

we need to get stronger as a roster. Trading necas takes away from that. Turbo, unless he takes a very friendly deal, is walking after this season. That leaves us with Svech, bunting, and Jarvis as top 6 wingers while degrading our bottom 6 as well.

I agree but I don’t see why though, realistically what else can they achieve at that level?

Ferraro just feels like one of those guys who's going to end up on the Canes one way or another. I don't think this framework involving Necas works, but there is definitely a deal to be made with Ferraro and the Canes 1st.

Top 4 Dmen are assets in the league. its like a top 6 forward. but dmen are more scarce so their value is much higher, especially considered potential. Avs would not make this trade.

I just don't think the Sharks are a very good trade partner for a potential Necas deal. From what the rumors are Necas is only on the block as a part of a trade for an upgrade (like how he was the centerpiece of the Matther Tkachuk trade that never ended up happening). I'm sure the Sharks could put together an enticing package of futures if they were willing to make 1 of their better prospects available, I just don't think it's the kind of return the Canes are looking for.

It's less about what they can achieve, and more about what is good for their development (and to a lesser extent not burning years on the first ELC). Eklund has done quite well on a bad team, but generally speaking playing on an uncompetitive team is not good for your development. They are also both quite young and could use some extra time to physically develop/pack on some muscle.

Yeah that makes sense, I just think that it is also not a terrible thing to start some pro reps. Esp by the time they turn 20
