Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Johansen, Ryan
  2. 2024 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Cost to move = RD 2 #5 (37)

They lack this asset, or similar value lesser assets, so let’s modify the trade so that Chicago is properly compensated. There are a few ways to do this, this is just a suggestion that works in the machine

Chicago
(25) COL first Value: 14.46
R Johansen Value -8.32
Cost to make up : 6.14 (this is draft capital value sent to COL)
COL
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (LAK)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
LAK 2nd = (50) value: 5.00
A pick valued at 1.14 would be an early 4th round pick, which the hawks currently do no have. They could include a future 4th or make a trade for a pick valued in that range. Let’s say for this trade they do a 25 4th.
2.
CHI
  1. Lee, Anders
  2. 2024 1st round pick (NYI)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
In the machine 2YL at 7 AAV = RD 1 #15. Currently the islanders 1st is at 12th so the difference can be described as the value between 12 and 15.

RD 1 #12 = 29.98
Lee negative value = 24.93
Difference = 5.05
The difference is reflected in the trade so that NYI are sending 31.028 and receiving 31.144
NYI
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (VAN)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (CHI)

I'd say there's probably a sharper drop off from 1st rd to 2nd rd than this tool implies

Can't see the Av's or the Isles using their 1st rounders in these deals, even with the Hawks returning 2nd's in both trades.

I would be happy if we get anything back for Lee even if we had to give up a first

Getting a 2nd back even if it is late would still help the prospect pool

Agreed. Islanders would trade a 1st for a deadline player. I think the value is fine considering he is a cap dump. Main problem with this trade is that if you are trading your captain plus a first you better be signing or getting a player who helps the team win now

Among fans? Maybe. But these tools are based on studies that are based on historical data and calculations to determine an average value of picks and cap relief. The difference in value between a 32nd OA pick and a 33rd OA pick is not very much, people only care when you give it the label of "a 1st" or "a 2nd".

There’s two tabs on the tool. One says Draft pick value calculator and one says salary cap relief.

Sorry I might be stupid I don’t get how the players value correlates to the draft pick value and how you got that playoffs value

No, it’s an abstract concept I am applying in my own way. I’ll try to break it down here ~read this if the blues suck~

If you enter 4,000,000 into the salary relief tool with 1 year left, the displayed pick indicates what it historically has costed to move a contract of that value. In this case, the tool projects that the avalanche would need to include a 2nd round pick, 5th overall in that round, or the 37th overall pick. Each pick has a value assigned to it based on historical data for each spot (I assume), where higher picks have greater value.

In this post I am equating the draft pick compensation as the negative value to move that player. In other words, if the 37th pick is what’s projected to move that contract and that picks value is “8.32” normally then Ryan Johnson would have “-8.32” value to move for which Chicago would be compensated. In the mock trade, I suggested that as Colorodo does not have a 2nd of that value or much opportunity to mix and max assets to get to that 8.32 spot they should give Chicago there first and Chicago would send picks to make up the difference since they can. It would be like paying with a $20 bill and getting change from the store. In that case Chicago needs to make up 6.14 of draft pick value to make the trade fair for Colorodo which is then conveyed in picks valuing roughly that amount (2nd, 4th).

The tool does not account for the value of future picks, nor do calculations made today have the same value as after this season concludes. Depending on the results of the regular season, deadline, and playoffs who has what picks and where they are drafting change dramatically as in the case of the panthers making the SCF last year. Their draft picks went from being in the 15-20 range to number 31 which is a huge drop off.

I hope that helps, but let me know if I can explain something better.
