Wings decline. Duclair doesn’t move the needle. Rather have an affordable Berggren or move him for a young Dman

That 2nd could help you build a good package for a young defenseman.

The MTL trade is bad for the Sharks. 12m in salary versus 7 and for an extra year? I don't think the difference is a 2nd either.

I think the Sharks would do it. They have the space and both players fit the “hard to play against” mold that GMMG wants.

Sure could. Bergrren could as well or he fills the 3rd line scoring role next year on the cheap considering Raymond and Seider are due substantial raises

Really?

I suppose Hoffman, Duclair, Labanc, and Lindblom being gone makes this possible. Those two guys are less of a cap hit than those four. Plus we'll be loaded with ELC's next year.
On top of that.. those two MTL players probably provide more impact than those 4 players I mentioned.
But dude, the 4th year is tough.

Yea but by the time you get to that last year, buyouts are much more palatable.

Actually, you changed my mind on this. We'll likely have a LOT of cap space by year 4. We almost might need those contracts.
Then again, we could spend that money in a different way by then.

I don't see Eklund or anyone getting a fat contract by then.

That was my first impression as well, but if you take a step back it actually makes sense.
We could also spend in FA too, but those guys would likely playing out those contracts (likely not the full 82 with age/injuries).

There's zero chance they do that. They could easily get players that are hard to play against for league minimum in FA. It gives them zero flexibility when guys like Thrun, Eklund, Smith, Zetterlund, Musty, Shakir, etc. need to get paid.

It's absolutely horrible for the Sharks

MTL obviously takes that deal and runs imo just from cost savings. If we were being realistic, I'd imagine it would only be Gallagher for Vlasic and a pick, but I think it still doesn't work. Of all the positions Habs don't need anyone by far... It's LD.

Good luck getting players to sign for league minimum to play for a rebuilding team in the high cost of living Bay Area.

To address your concern about having to pay younger players, the reality is that it’s likely only Smith, Eklund, Musty, and Mukh will get big time paydays if things go extremely well for the Sharks. And Smith hasn’t even signed his ELC, so unless he signs it this year and burns a year he wouldn’t even need a new deal until Anderson and Gallagher are of the books.

Maybe Montreal throws in a youngish LD like Harris and adds another pick. Or ups the pick to one of their extra 1sts.

My thoughts exactly, even if they don’t need big pay days, I’d rather have the flexibility to buy at least someone who is a FA, or if eklund or anyone goes off who knows, we could have a 5m player at some point

I think the consensus is that this deal is light on sweeteners from MTL. Maybe they add another 2nd, or it’s a 1st and a 3rd.

I just don’t see cap space being a problem 3 years from now. And if it is honestly that’s a good problem for the Sharks to have because it means they’ve had a bunch of young guys go off. There’s always ways to address that problem if it arises (buyouts, LTIR, etc.)

I get what you are trying to do as we are asset hungry, I would just want a top 20 pick or an A prospect for this
