Rebuild Over

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 28, 2024
Published: Mar. 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hughes wants to be a playoff team next year so he goes nuclear on the rebuild overpaying for highly skilled guys, some that are a bit of reclamation projects. You can look at these moves as blowing up the future or ruining the salary structure of the team but Hughes and Gorton have never cared about conventional wisdom, they have just made the moves that are required to make the team better, more competitive now and for the long-term. Adding 3 under 26 top 9 forwards builds onto the young core especially when 2 of them are additional top line quality forwards, the ends justify the means.

Canes decline. Primeau would be a 5th string goalie and Perets is waiver exempt. No

LMAO, You mean a great backup/tandem, Freddie is done for the year, Raanta sucks, Martin is the current backup and is a lot worse than Primeau, so bad I fact that the Canes got him because he literally has such little value that he was put on waivers cause Noone even wanted to pay a 7th for him.

My apologies then last I had heard he was done, then I guess the Canes don't need a backup, good to know

I know you said overpay in the description, but Hughes isn't going to overpay AND trade a player he just acquired in Newhook.

Zegras trade:
- Overpay. Farrell instead of Newhook might be closer.

Dubois trade:
- Take out Kaleyiv and add Ylonen, would be close to similar value Jets got for Dubois (less for sure but maybe if LA wants to move Dubois it could work).

Andersson Trade:
- HUGE overpay...

Rasmus Andersson (2nd round, 53rd overall, 2015)
Through age 22: 2G - 17A - 19P - 90GP - (+15)

Justin Barron (1st Round, 25th overall, 2020)
11G - 18A - 29P - 87GP - (-9)

Adding in Mesar and another 1st round pick makes this trade essentially 3 first round picks for Andersson, who will be a UFA in 2 years. Not worth it.

To get Zegras we would need to clear a roster spot, hence the addition of Newhook and not Farrell, also I don't see Newhook as being anything more than our next Drouin. Promising young forward with top 6 potential but never really puts it together.

I would do that as well, Kaleyev isn't anything special just a depth roster peice anyway lol

Anderson likely returns 2 1sts I was gonna leave out Mesar but decided to continue with the overpay theme so that no one could say it wasn't enough lol. I am not as high on Barron but he could also be better than he has so far, so I am not opposed to forgoing the Anderson trade either. We really just have to have someone in place that can fill in until Reinbacher arrives, also the key stat between Anderson and Barron is their +/-, I was looking for a good stopgap who allows fewer goals lol

I'd be hesitant to move that Calgary pick.
If Florida is a lottery team next season we could get Calgary's pick in the 2nd-10th range. (If I have it correctly, but however slim, that pick has a chance to be high in 25 or 26.)
Florida is facing a possible turnover of nearly half their roster while Calgary is selling off players. I wouldn't discount that being a 1st + 3rd/4th or top 10 pick at this point.

The PLD to MTL has to come to an end. It’s the most unoriginal trade on this. He’s French Canadien, we get it. He’s having a horrible year, he has a horrible contract and plays only when he wants to. There is no way he plays on a young team like the Canadiens. Please stop this.

We get it, you don't understand that players moved to New teams might struggle or just plain not fit but that doesn't actually mean they lose all their value and 60+ point centers make about 8 mil (Suzuki is a perfect example that we can relate to). Finally, I am a Habs fan that lives in Ontario, I couldn't give 2 sh**s where PLD is from, he is a top 6 center on just about every team in the league, why would you not want to add a top 6 center to this roster? Do you think Dach will be able to play more than 3/4 of a season for the first time in his entire professional career? I have serious doubts about that, if he does it's a benefit to have 3 top 6 centers and 5 top 6 wingers (for what seems like the first time in decades). The goal is to make the playoffs and maybe eventually win a cup, not just sit idly by wasting players times being a fringe team forever. CP31 said it best, picks and prospects mean jack sh** when the goal is to be competitive, give me players who are already making an impact in the league for that.

We are not trading for PLD. You are clearly high. Eat some Cheetos and chill out, and come back to this board later and you will see that this is not happening.

Your an idiot if you think Blake wouldn't take that deal right now just to get PLD off the team. Doughty has already made it clear that PLD is a lockerroom problem calling him out publicly for being "selfish"

So why would anyone trade for PLD?

And don’t call anyone an idiot on this. It’s the internet bud.

Freddie's back in the next week... before today, Kochetkov had a .911 save percentage. Martin's got a .922 save percentage in Carolina...

Better give him the vezna now, he has a .922 sv% in 5 games!!! He's the next Roy!

You do realize how ridiculous that statement was, don't you?

Not a ridiculous statement, just saying that a sub .900 goaltender in Primeau doesn't do anything for Carolina. He's your problem, you keep him.

Acquiring PLD is not already bad enough now you want to pay assets to get it done. Please stop it.

LMFAO, is that the best you got? PLD has had a bad fit this year in L.A. that doesn't mean he has totally forgotten how to play hockey. It's also not like I gave up too many assets worth much, Dvorak is worth maybe 2 2nds or a 2nd + 3rd. Harris is worth like maybe a 2nd or 3rd and the late 1st in a weak draft isn't worth much either since the prospect likely won't ever make the NHL.
