Stockpile Draft Picks

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2024
Published: Mar. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Holding GMBM to his word and he takes no contracts (not even expiring ones) back in trade. Pile up picks for the pending (on-going) rebuild(s). Assume all WSH UFAs are dealt and a few busted prospects or players that don't seem to fit the mold.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (VGK)
VGK
  1. Mantha, Anthony ($2,850,000 retained)
Additional Details:
VGK rents Mantha (with retention) the Caps get a 2nd rounder this year and conditional 4th rounder next year pending if they meet playoff success or a re-signing.
2.
WSH
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (CAR)
CAR
  1. Pacioretty, Max
Additional Details:
Caps are on the hook for $2M in bonuses, but yield a middle pick next year
3.
WSH
  1. 2024 5th round pick (EDM)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Edmundson, Joel
  2. Malenstyn, Beck
Additional Details:
EDM needs a little bottom 6 fwd and defensive depth
4.
WSH
  1. 2025 4th round pick (LAK)
5.
WSH
  1. 2024 1st round pick (COL)
  2. 2024 7th round pick (NSH)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Two NHL roster players on reduced cost deals (albeit w/ some term) and a high pick should weigh out using a late first rounder and future 3rd rounder.
COL
  1. Kuemper, Darcy ($1,250,000 retained)
  2. Kuznetsov, Evgeny ($2,800,000 retained)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Kuemper worked well with the better defense in COL and is an upgrade from Georgiev. Kuzy needs a fresh start and has the touch to be worth a 3rd on a reduced cost.
6.
WSH
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
  2. 2025 5th round pick (CHI)
TOR
  1. Jensen, Nick
Additional Details:
If Caps retained it would have to be a higher pick TOR gets from somewhere else (as they have no 2nds)
7.
WSH
  1. 2024 4th round pick (VAN)
  2. 2025 7th round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. Aubé-Kubel, Nicolas
Additional Details:
Some cheap grit for playoff run

NAK was utterly useless last time he was in toronto so why would they want round 2 of that? Jensen gets you a 3rd with a 5th for retention

He just had a press conference where he said he wants to bring in high ceiling young players that are boom or bust

Another good catch. Fixing w/ no retention on Jensen for a slightly lesser return.

He also said that if the "high ceiling, low cost" guys arent available that getting rid of contracts will "open the door to other prospects." I take that as full time spots for Miro, Iorio, maybe even Frank, or bring in Cristall...

I think Frank could make a case to come up but the others need more development time. We cant rush them into the league and risk stunting their development.

I think it Miro is close to being able to come up but I really felt he needed a full season in the AHL this year. I would like to see Stevenson come up aswell.

I feel he should be targeted young talent no matter what here, don't rush the young guys too much

So Kaliyev is high on his list I guess...could be a buy low and get some work outta him like Milano.

There's a lot of things here that don't really work for the caps or the other team but the thing that I really noticed is that there is absolutely no chance the caps move Malentstyn unless it's a stupid overpayment. He's been awesome in the bottom 6.

When Patches chooses the team he wants to go to, you won’t be getting a 3rd.
