Being signed until 2028 at that cap hit, as a 31 year old, is not good -- it's actually really bad.
Plus, he plays with Crosby -- I (and many probably do) have doubts he'll perform as well when he's not on a line with one of the best players in the league.

Detroit can't fit Rust next season and he's not worth making a bunch of moves to make it work, let alone the ridiculous return.
