Would you consider trading Montembeau for the right return

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2024
Published: Mar. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hitting the TDL, there are 2-3 teams who really need a starting goaltender. Now I like Montembeau, he's impressed me a lot, but with his current contract and extended contract in place, he is incredibly attractive as trade bait.

Here's why I would consider it:

1) If we trade him and ride Allen/Primeau until the end of the season, we will lose a lot more games. That's actually not a bad thing, as we will get a higher draft pick

2) We could probably get a mid-late 1st and a B prospect for Monty, or maybe just an A prospect

3) Allen and Primeau as a tandem next year is not gonna help us win a lot of games, but we can always dip into the goalie market this offseason if we feel we are playoff-bound after the draft

4) If we are not gonna make the playoffs next year, this would probably be "selling high" on Monty, as we can expect Fowler to hit the NHL in 2025-26

What would it take for you to consider it?

I think you could get McDavid for him. Only if Edmonton retains though.

For a severe overpay, that's the only way I move him at this point. Holtz is not a severe overpay, nobody would like the price of what it would take for me to move Monty right now.

Starting goalie? The guy who has never even put up a league average save % or started 50% of games in a season?

No, it's just the facts. He isn't a starting goaltender and if a top prospect like Holtz was on the block, he wouldn't be on a list of the top 10 goalies made available.

So when he's relied on the most, he's the worst? And that helps your case somehow?

no, when you rely the most on DEFENDERS which are all recruits it tends to be more difficult.

The most important member of any penalty kill is the goalie.

You would be disagreeing with basically every hockey expert, good luck with that.

But every hockey expert agrees Monty is a starting goalie... You are disagreeing with that, so good luck to you my good sir!

His GSAA has been great for 2 years, with a bunch of rookie/sophomore defensemen and David Savard in front of him. Pull up your socks sir, you are way off the reservation.

If you are going to quote stats, you should at least use good ones. GSAA is trash.

Yeah. What would your offer be 2024 top 5 protected, otherwise 2025 unprotected?

Funniest part is it's coming from a Leaf fan... who wouldn't know what good goaltending looks like...

Top 16 protected, otherwise 2025 top 3 protected, more likely we call you in the offseason tho.

Let’s say our pick ends up 10th overall, I’d offer 2025 1st+10th overall+2nd+Bahl+Schmid/Daws for Montembault, Kaiden Guhle, Jake Evans

So essentially if he helps you make the playoffs, we get this year's pick, otherwise we get next year's?

I would rather just have 2025 top 3 protected... 2024 bottom 16 is low quality compared to other years.
