If you traded Demers right now, I'm almost positive the return would not be a 1st and 2x 2nds, so who do the real GM's and real scouts and real people in hockey value more? A guy who was a UFA and the highest bid was 4.5M or a guy who was worth a 1st and 2x 2nds to a team who already had 3 great defensemen?

A lot of it depends on the team. Some teams are more analytical and others care about +/- and hits lol. Would Demers fetch that return? Probably not. Should Hamonic netted that return? "Hockey people" say yes and every single analytical/stat person said it was horrendous. Does it make sense for teams to give up 1st round picks like candy at the TDL for a 2 month rental? No. Do teams do it? Yes. Doesn't make it right..

This wasn't a deadline deal where desperation is factored in. This was a solid legit hockey deal and there's been a lot of interest around the league in Hamonic for awhile now. The price was obviously too high for a lot of teams to stomach, but eventually someone ponied up the pieces to secure his services. I don't think anyone is going to give up anything of value for Demers. He's a guy you can get on the open market for just cap space and dollar bills. Nothing remarkable about Demers. This years Demers was Karl Alzner, a solid guy who's okay, but he's not going to take a big step forward in terms of play or value.

Just like most people said about this deal. And was there a ton of interest? Just because NHL Network talks aobut it doesn't really mean there is a ton of interest. Maybe 10-15 inquired heard the price and laughed - never to think about Hamonic again. CGY obviously valued him. Nobody else cared enough to pay a ridiculous price for him. If you like him that's fine I'm not trying to act like a know it all but I personally think he sucks and is so overrated by the media. Same with Schenn that the flyers traded. I like him but two 1st for the guy is a pretty good deal considering that he provides such negative value 5v5 and has to try to make it up on the PP.

I'm trying to trade Marner for smaller pieces and trade Pulock for a bigger piece.

You're are a different style of Hockey person than I so it's interesting. During the season I watch Hockey every single night. Mostly the Bruins, but when they aren't on I turn on NBC Sports or NHL Network and obtain most of my knowledge from watching the games consistently. I basically get to scout every team during the course of the year and get acquainted with the players and who are the overrated guys and who are the underrated guys. I do agree Hamonic is kinda overrated, but I still see him as more valuable than Demers. IF you put their best years side by side you'd be blown away how much better Hamonic is than Demers. He played 25+ minutes one year and had a + rating. Demers highest ice time during a year was under 21. You know what you're getting with him, but it's not something special. Hamonic was once very good and all teams GM's and scouts and player personnel assistants are arrogant and think that if they bring a guy in who's been great before, they can turn him back into that greatness. Sometimes it happens, but unfortunately a lot of times it doesn't. If you compared their relative value around the league and took a poll from every scout, I'm quite sure the majority would prefer to add Hamonic to their roster over Demers. If you feel like Demers is better and you can trade him for Hamonic, I'd gladly trade you Pulock for Hamonic + 2018 1st + Mantha. That'd be more value coming to me in my mind because Hamonic was once really good and he's still young enough to turn things around again.

I'm not saying that it should be compared to a TDL deal I'm saying that rarely do they make sense.

We have a turd like him in Boston named Ryan Spooner. He's soft and weak and doesn't win battles. His only remarkable asset is his PP prowess. I'm not trading for those type of guys, I need a solid team that's going to get engaged every night. I don't want turds who coast around waiting until the puck finds them.

Age is surprisingly a factor when I determine how good they project to be. I look at roles and value 2way players more than just #6 PP QB or #6 DFD. Demers is in the middle of his prime and isn't likely to get better and he's only a #4 D. Hamonic is just entering his prime now and things got stale with the NYI's. I think he'll get paired with either Brodie or Giordano, the 2 top LHD's because they probably won't play him on his off side with Hamilton because that wouldn't be a great fit. I know Brodie plays the right as a LHD with Giordano, but if they split those 2 up and give 1 to Hamilton and 1 to Hamonic, I think he'll have a great season. I think being paired with Giordano or Brodie would be a huge step up and they'd practically carry his ass. He'd literally go back to being a force like he was a few years ago and I expect him to kinda be jump started like a dead battery getting shocked into running. He's been rumored on the block for years now and I think he'll be happy it's finally over. That's gotta be a burden when your name comes up in trade rumors all the time and you're trying to just focus on the game ahead of you.

However, as soon as they did it I figured CGY was stupid but I know what they are thinking. They did the same thing with Hamilton a few years ago. Gave up the same picks too i think. They get a guy and hope he turns out well. It did the first time. I'm not so much worried about Demers breaking out either and I'd have more confidence in him on the ice than Hamonic right now for sure. If I'm comparing Demers/Hamonic honestly I'd say Hamonic is probably a better volume shooter and better on the rush, but I'd give demers the edge as far as shot effectiveness, breakouts, on ice shot influence, and passing. The best part of Hamonic's game is on the rush otherwise he is below average to average at best.

That year he took on 25+ minutes he was considered a big breakout player and had a lot of praise league wide. I think him going to another place is going to relieve him and we'll see the best he's got. The only way he isn't outstanding is if they put him on the 3rd pair with an unknown type player. If he rides shotgun with Brodie or Giordano I think he'll be great this season. I'd expect great things from him if he's the 2nd best defenseman when he's on the ice for his team. That'd be a lot less pressure and point him in the right direction to succeed.

You have to take into account the situation he'll be put into and I think it is one where he'll succeed more. He's like the #4 defenseman now and he was basically top 2 for NYI. Less pressure more chance to project higher.

That type of player just doesn't scream 1st rounder and two 2nds lol

Yeah but he's a plug and play option. You have to take into account the situation he'll be put into and I think it is one where he'll succeed more. He's like the #4 defenseman now and he was basically top 2 for NYI. Less pressure more chance to project higher.

We're talking Seth Jones + for Marner and I think Jones is great, it's just I believe Marner will end up the better player.

Domi + Ceci + Nelson + Johansson for Marner + everything in the package. If you want to pull the trigger on this, let me know.
