Offseason Moves

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 11, 2024
Published: Mar. 11, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I keep Reinbacher in Laval for the start of the season in order for him to get ready for the North Maerican leagues. I send the 1st rounder to Laval also since they'll most likely be picking 5th to 10th;

I provide AVS with a winger and a good prospect defenseman with a pick to get Mittelstadt and sign him for 3 years;

I make a move for Marchessault.. Vegas can't sign him and 10 other players with 8M$ of cap space left. I offer 3 years, just under 8M$ for him to come play in MTL.

I put Dach on the third line, but most likely he'll be at home most of the year ... again... 2 years in he's got 60 games and 40 pts and people are still saying that it was a good move.. I don't understand it... Until he can play 70+ games in ONE season he's not worth the trade right now. Romanov is in the + 20 right now and has missed but 6 games last year and one this year..

If and only IF Zegras is still being offered, I would make the move. I would offer Anaheim a first and a second with some conditions; two NHL ready players and two prospects that need a new start. If the relationship is that bad between Zegras and ANA then why not make the move? Some say his attitude is not up to par, but he's a young guy and will hit is maturity in 3 years which is most likely where the Habs should.. SHOULD.. be competitive enough to go for the Conference title and hopefully to the cup...

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Mittelstadt was aquired for Byram; but Avs will need to makes space for their cap issues which will have 12 players active and 11.325M$ to spare. They'll need a low cost Defense; and a guy who can play wing for less than 2M$ to replace the long list of players that become UFA at the end of the season. Mittelstadt will cost them at least a 3.5M$ cap hit if they want to keep him (Never hit the 20 goals/year yet so should around that number) hence they'll run out of space
COL
  1. Armia, Joel ($1,700,000 retained)
  2. Harris, Jordan
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Armia on the third of 4th at the price isn't a gamble, he's good defensively and can play offense in bursts. Harris proved some good value for a developping defenseman and will cost less than 2M$ also on the cap. Habs add the 2nd round pick and this gives AVS the pick they need for 2025.
2.
MTL
  1. Groulx, Benoit-Olivier [RFA Rights]
  2. Zegras, Trevor
Additional Details:
IF .. only IF Zegras isn't getting what Verbeek wants back for him, this is something I'd put on the table to see what the feedback would be. Barron is getting better the more he plays; Kidney is a good prospect; Norlinder needs a new start; And Anaheim get picks and Evans helps them out now at center if they need him.
ANA
  1. Barron, Justin
  2. Evans, Jake
  3. Kidney, Riley
  4. Norlinder, Mattias
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (COL)
  6. 2025 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
*1st round pick would be protected to top 5; if the pick is top 5, then ANA can chose one of these options:
1. Take WIN 2024 1st round pick and two 3rd picks (one from 2024 and the other for 2025); or

2. Habs 2026 1st round pick (no cond't) and the best of 2025's 3rd round picks that Habs will still have at draft day.
3.
MTL
  1. 2024 7th round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
I put a 7th, but really.. Future considerations would be enough on any team or else he goes, back to Laval.

Anaheim and Colorado both say no, like easily say no to the point you would think they're laughing as they hang up.

Marchessault would be a waste of money. Aging vet that Habs don't need and just takes up a roster spot for a younger player

Only thing I some what agree with in this post is keeping Reinbacher in the AHL but it will depend on his training camp

Zegras is not, nor was on the table, and if he was available, it would take one of Slafkovsky, Reinbacher +, or MTLs 24 1st + at the draft.

"You weren't actively shopping him, but were teams calling on (Trevor Zegras) near the deadline?

No, they were not. Zegras is hurt. It's a situation there that everybody is speculating on that. We want Z to play with us. Hopefully, he can get through this injury pretty quickly and get him back on the ice."

Like I feel like I can hear clown music playing talking about why the Avs would do that trade. Like preposterous and then you double down on a stupid contract for Mittlestadt that would never sign that deal considering he is arbitration eligible and would just sign his QO and walk to UFA. So dumb.

Oh yeah laughing, then take a look at the contract he gives Mittlestadt an arbitration eligible RFA.

lol wtf. You know Zegras has never been shopped right? Like at all. We counter with a ‘25 1st for caufield IF and only IF MTL doesn’t get back what they want for him 😂

If Verbeek's statement is true then fine, but the "speculations" he's talking about are not just from MTL reporters, it was all over the league. Many GMs will say things like that to throw off the sent. He also may want more than what was offered or I'm putting here.. Or like the statement says, blown out of proportions.. We'll know once the season ends and Draft day happens.. Maybe even at TDL next year if they can't come up with a satisfactory number that Zegras will want for many seasons.

But clearly he isn't worth close to even one of Slafkovsky, or Reinbacher + if the rumors were running around about him not being happy with the treatment over his contract. The value drops.

If there is no issue between him and the management then it's a clear no move situation and they'll give him his 12M$+ contract in two years.

Nylander and Marner both held out for contracts, yet they are still with the Leafs. EP40 was "on the market" because he couldn't come to terms with Vancouver, yet he stayed. Contract negotiations are always a tumultuous time between player and GM, only reason anything was mentioned was because of how high profile a player Zegras is.

And no, a contract spat and some bad blood between player and GM doesn't drive the price down, he would have to be actively acting up in the locker room or on the ice, or refusing to play, which he isn't. He's under contract two more years, and we still hold his RFA rights at the end of that. If he was really THAT pissed, he wouldn't have signed, he would have demanded a trade then and there.

And you're welcome to believe that Reinbacher +, Slafkovsky straight up, or MTLs 24 1st + aren't worth the price for Zegras, but to buy a player who's not available and of Z's status, you have to buy with Quality. Anaheim prospect system is as deep, if not deeper than Montreal's, why would we stock up on middle 6 pieces in exchange for Z when we have as many of them as MTL does? Only reason Guentzel went for a grab bag of pieces is because PITs prospect cupboards look like a great depression pantry, there's nothing of value there.

It was one shmuck with no sources. The same one who last year definitively said Gibby played his last game in ANA. Both Lebrun via 3 sources and Verbeek shot this rumor down. Trading him at all is unrealistic. Discussing this terrible of an offer is time wasted for all of us

Zegras was signed for 3 years, still RFA controlled at the end. You know he won’t be in a contract negotiation for 2 more years right? Can you share why there would be any negotiations at the draft or next TDL?

Clearly not worth it because of the contract negotiation? I’m sorry, please enlighten us how his 3 year contract at sub-$6M negatively impacts ANA leverage in any way. Certainly the opposite. Let’s not pretend like a long negotiation means the two sides don’t want to work together. Ask Willy and Toronto if their bridges are burned

$12M 😂. I’m sorry my guy, but I think you need to brush up on the state of things. You know Elias Pettersson just signed for $11.6M right? Nylander $11.5M. Hell I’ll be stoked if we wind up paying him $12M, it’ll mean he put up 100+pt seasons these next two years cuz that’s the only way anything close to that number gets thrown around
