Stay or Go

Description
My current assessment on the roster as it currently is, and who I feel strongly about being a part of the future going forward. The Sens have a bunch of good pieces, but I think this current mix does not gel together at all.

The guys in the "stay" category are the guys who I'm convinced are part of the solution, not the problem. Tkachuk, Giroux, Sanderson and Zub are all extremely obvious. Timmy is openly frustrated with his mediocre (by his standards) season, but he's clearly the cornerstone piece of the franchise. Greig, Pinto and Joseph are all top 6 capable two way forwards, with Pinto in particular breaking out this year as a truly impactful player as a 2C imo. Kelly is a depth guy obviously, but one I believe has a place on this team past this season.

The guys I'm unsure on, are pretty self explanatory. I think all three are good players to varying degrees, but I'm unsure if I see them as part of a long term solution. Batherson is a great forward on a cheap deal, but he's always lacked on effort/consistency. Chabot's a great at what he does, but defensive flaws and injuries are a concern. Brannstrom is straight up a good 3LD, but I'm also sick of having that conversation over and over again.

Everyone else is some combination of subpar depth, actively make the team worse, or guys they just need to move on from.

As a fan of a different team. I agree with most ideas here. I was cheating for the sens to make the next step this up. I feel it. Of the list in the go category the two I think about is Chychrun and Bernard docker. Chychrun I agree should go but the return has to be more than what was paid. So a good right shot defenseman similar to him or more than a 1st and 2nds.
As for JBD, in very limited minutes he has actually looked decent and blocks and hits a lot. This could be advantageous for the sens if he could learn more consistency and be able to prove a few more minutes in the game. For his price and how teams may not claim him , that could be a good mainstay. Norris I like but his injuries present a big problem. Can you trust him to produce and get healthy if not who can you trade him to?

Something needs to happen... Have to trade one of Chychrun or Chabot.. That being said, if you trade one of them, I think you keep Bran for insurance. He won't make more than 3... and you can get him on a longish term deal. Good on third pair...

Goal-tending needs to be addressed. Korpi is gone. Bought-out.

You hope Norris returns healthy and on the wing next year. You Stu-Pinto-Grieg down the middle now and I think he can thrive beside Stu or Grieg.

Overall, they've been playing with zero structure in front of their goalies...

"Facing the Sens feels like a completely different experience than facing most teams. It's felt like they don't play with any structure. It's fully run and gun. It's a chaotic strategy that'll either work if they have a number of things go their way, or will completely explode on them and they'll look like a peewee team. It's truly just not sustainable and makes it impossible for a goalie to come in and have a fair shot."

You look at a guy like Cam Talbot:

A .914 career goalie

Since 19-20: here's how his seasons have looked. I want you to guess which year he played behind the Sens D corps:

Too many offensive minded players, and not enough effort on the defensive game. It’s great to score but you also have to defend. I’d lean to keep branny and move Chabot but his contract will be a tough sell. Add in some good depth and a steady goalie and this team can be a lot better. Although I feel like I’ve said this for 3 years now lol

Chychrun is a hard one for me. I don't think he is a good fit, but at the same time if the return on him does not get players or pieces who are good fits, I really dont know if it makes more sense to give him another run at RD with Sanderson and bank that he will figure it out, or to deal him for whatever you can.

Chychrun has arguably been Ottawa's 5th best Dman since DJ Got fired. 21 pts in 25 games for DJ, 11 in 41 for Jacques. If he's not producing he's not effective. Staios can't get hung up on what Ottawa paid, just on what the best deal out there is. Imo his weak play under Martin means the run back isn't an option. He's not shown himself to be a part of the solution, and it makes way more sense to ship him out in the summer.

Honestly, I kind of like the idea of moving Chychrun and Chabot, bringing in Karlsson, and finding him a good fitting LD partner. A 2nd pair of Oleksiak-Karlsson would be insanely good imo (not that Oleksiak is necessarily available). I'd also really like Jalen Chatfield for the 3RD spot.

oh yeah it’s not a question about what we paid, it’s more a question of if better options are actually going to be feasible/available to us for expendable pieces. I would like to think there are avenues for us to improve the defence, but if none of those are possible in actuality then do we trade him? He’s been below his standards, but he could also have a better year next year.

yes bring in a much older player that is worst defensively than chabot or chych makes a tons of sense....

You're not replacing both of them with Karlsson, you're replacing one of them with Karlsson, and replacing the other with a stout defensive LD to play with Karlsson. There are a bunch of options but you were to get a guy like Jamie Oleksiak, an Oleksiak-Karlsson pairing would be better than Chabot and Chychrun imo.
