Leafs could def get more for Marner...

Upgrade the 3rd to a 2nd and add Dumais...

And no CBJ fans, I don't care that you think Dumais worth more than 1 year+extension of Marner

Literally no one says that. I don't think I've seen anyone, including CBJ fans, valuing Dumais as more than a middle-6 guy, probably ~2nd in trade value at the moment.

On value this trade favors Columbus, even if you add Dumais, but it's just unrealistic. Marner isn't waiving his NMC, or signing an extension in Columbus, and there's little evidence Columbus would even still be interested. The offer sheet was pre-Laine/Gaudreau by a GM who recently got fired for doing a poor job.

Columbus. Does. Not. Want. Marner.

Marner. Does. Not. Want. Columbus.

The GM that offer-sheeted him many years ago is long gone.

His next contract is your problem, Leafs. Sorry. You're not sending him to a rebuilding team for half their assets. Be real.

Gotta agree with everyone; Marner waiving is unrealistic but Marner waiving for 29th place Columbus is outlandishly preposterous

Just doing that as a precautionary, some fans think their prospects are equal to McDavid++ in value

The reason I suggested a Marner move to the Jackets is not because of their old GM, or the value in prospects that they have, it is simply I just want Marner gone. I cannot phantom the Leafs handing over another 12 plus million dollar deal to a forward when we haven't won anything.

The idea / unrealistic part is moving Marner this off-season aka him willing to forgo his NMC. If he is unwilling to be dealt, I simply let him walk at the end of the year and spend the 12 plus million elsewhere. While you lose a ton of value for nothing, this team isn't going to win with 3 forwards making 12 plus million a year.

Why do you think the Leafs HAVE to resign Marner?

A little history. Contending teams keep their upcoming UFAs. Contending teams actually trade for upcoming UFAs, for a Cup run, even if they know they can't resign the player(s).
So you can be 99% sure the Leafs won't/can't trade Marner. If he leaves as a UFA, the Leafs just spend that cap elsewhere.

Columbus just spends 10m on a another UFA and keep their young assets. It shouldn't be hard to understand.

They don't have to, the worry is they will. Brad seemingly just gave Willy a blank cheque and I worry he would do the same for Marner.

As for comparing teams that buy these players during the deadline, those guys might be on the team for 2 months max, there isn't that long standing connection that is built between team, coaches, fans, etc.
Marner is born and raised, has been drafted and spent his entire career here, wants to be here and has inspired so many fans to become Maple Leaf fans. Letting him walk would have a massive backlash among the community and team.

The idea of trading him at least there is a return that could mend the relationship between the fans / team. And sure, there are players that have been born, raised, drafted and spent their whole career with a team, but none at the value of Marner over the past 20 years. Yet, you and I both know that Marner won't move his NMC which is why I named this an unrealistic off-season.

Fans realize or should that UFA players have the right to sign anywhere. There is no obligation for the player to resign or the team to resign him. Look at the Leafs.....Full of UFAs from other teams, Bertuzzi, Domi, Tavares, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Reaves, Brodie, Benoit, Samsonov . There weren't be a backlash as the just look at the new guys on the team. "Letting him walk" is kinda of a silly point. Teams don't "let" a player sign with another team, it's the players choice.

Marner is an impossible trade. Contending teams don't have the cap for him. Poor teams don't trade for him, because they aren't giving up anything good, they could just spend the 11m for Marner on other players and keep; the assets.

By the way, why do say Marner "wants to be here". It's might be his preferred destination, but let's say if he offered 2m more than the Leafs a year for seven years by another team. Then we might know he truly "wants to be here"
