Hughes masterclass. I guess the retention makes it a not so bad contract but my gosh how will they get a 2nd rounder lol. I get he has had a good few games but no way this keeps up

NJD is still almost certainly going to bring in another guy to be the starter.

Between that guy, Daws, and Schmid, it's unlikely that Allen reaches 40 starts next year

He just needs to play 40 games next year. Devils either make the playoffs next year, or they will trade him to someone who will.

If Devils bring in another starter (ie Markstrom), then Allen goes the other way (and gets dealt to a contender at the TDL)

Unlikely considering he was brought in to be the backup next year

Looks like a starter to me. And to your point, you need space for Daws and Schmid.

daws and schmid will still be waivers exempt next year. It was again, another key reason we brought in both kahkonen and allen.

Allen needs to play, he’s a UFA, and needs a new contract. I’ll bet money an agreement has been made that he either plays, or they move him somewhere where he plays.

Allen has another year left. Allen has played 40+ games 1 time in the last 5 years (by 2 games), why would he suddenly NEED to now.

Jake Allen was brought in to be the backup next year

and make the playoffs-
Upgrades to 2025 2nd round pick if Allen plays in 40 or more 2024-25 games and if the club that Allen is a member of qualifies for the playoffs in 2024-25

yeahhh, i just don't see it. maybe if games this year were included in the 40 total but he's not going to be playing much more than he did this year next season

Why would NJD actively strive to give up a 2nd if they are not competing for the playoffs by trading allen to a contender? Unless said contender themselves is offering a 2nd for allen.

If the devils bring in another starter, Jake Allen will be the backup as was the plan the entire time. Hence why we acquired allen with 2 years left on his deal

That makes no sense. Why wouldn't NJ just bring in a goaltender and have Allen be the backup? Allen is cheap and is a better option than Daws and Schmid to be the backup.

So far, so good.

If he plays well enough to trigger that condition, I think everyone will be happy.

i wonder, if he get traded the deadline to a contender and plays a cumulative 40 between 2 teams, does it count?

That’s exactly the point, the pick would upgrade, because the Devils would get something in return for a trade.
The question basically becomes, would the rather have a 2nd and no 3rd (if they’re out of the playoffs) or two 3rds.

Honestly though, my guess is Jersey is a playoff team next year, and either Allen is the starter in Jersey, or he is traded to Calgary as part of the Markstrom deal, to be there starter over there, and he’s moved to a contender at the deadline as a depth option, in which case the Habs get the 2nd rounder that way.

We’ll see though, first of all he will need to stay healthy.

I would rather have a 2nd.

Again, Jake Allen was brought in to be the BACKUP goalie in NJD next year.

He wasn’t brought in to be immediately shipped out (if he was we simply wouldn’t have traded for him).

He wasn’t brought in to be the starter.

The scenario where Montreal gets a 2nd is that NJDs starter that they bring in gets hurt very early, and Allen plays well enough to make the playoffs.
