My plan

Created by: nic_par
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 23, 2024
Published: Mar. 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Easy plan in 5 steps:

1. Draft a forward with a top-7 pick (best case Celebrini/Lindstrom/Demidov, would be happy with Eiserman and Catton as well).
2. Trade Matheson for a quality forward who can play with Dach
3. Trade Savard for picks
4. Sign Matt Roy to play with Guhle and unlock his potential
5. Sign Slaf to a 7.5x8 extension

Then, start the year with Hutson, Reinbacher, Beck and Mesar in Laval. I think Mailloux makes the team out of camp, and once the LD jam is sorted out Hutson and Reinbacher can come up at the end of the year.

Value wise it’s pretty fair. Carolina wouldn’t do it because they don’t need a D but it’s definitely close to a fair offer

Putting aside the issue of whether Carolina would be interested in Matheson at all, the Hurricanes aren't trading Necas (who is at the beginning of his career) for two seasons of Matheson and the Winnipeg first, never mind the second going the other way.

Yeah, take out the 2nd and add the CGY 1st.

Then we can adress the question of Carolina's will to part with him.

The guy is a 30 goals scorer on a low scoring team, you would think they grab on to him. But there was credible sources bringing him up at TDL... as a defense 1st team full of UFA defensemen, maybe they could be tempted to flip an arbitration eligible RFA for a veteran Dman with term.

I wouldn't even consider it, but I'm just trying to make sense of the noise.

No, it's not.... Matheson is a fine 2nd pairing guy. A 2nd pairing guy and a late 1st isn't getting Necas. This is the equivalent of Skjei and a 1st for Caufield and a 2nd. Necas and Caufield have comparable stats and Skjei's probably better than Matheson. Would you take that for Caufield?

Matheson is more than able to play 25 min a night. He is on pace for 55 pts. That’s way more than a second pairing D. Also, he is signed for 2 years longer than Skjei at a steal of a deal. His worth is probably a first in the 12-20 range and a second.

And yes, I would consider Skjei and a first for Caufield fair if Skjei was able to play 25 min a night and he would be signed for 2 more years.
