The 5th overall pick makes this a little more interesting... ultimately, I still think the Canes pass because this is a draft ripe with defensemen and the Canes don't like taking D men in round one. Wrong year. It's more likely that the Canes would move Necas for another top 6 forward, so probably Caufield. Either that, or there would need to be very uncomfortable conversations around Slafkovsky

I doubt KH will trade a chance for Catton/Lindstrom/Demidov for Necas... Habs are rebuilding and not in a win-now mode.

Necas would be fun to acquire for the habs, but the Canes are not a good trading partners because the only thing the habs are willing to trade are overpaid vets, LHD and future... which is of no interest for the Canes.

We can't trade for Necas by sending one of our top 6 guys... then it's only a latteral move that serves no purpose.

Necas would be a significant upgrade to what is already on the wings in Montreal, I don't think that's questionable. But there isn't a fit here. The 2 guys Carolina would have major interest in are Suzuki and Caufield, and even then Caufield on his own is a downgrade from Necas.

I love that we are arguing the same points on two different posts ahaha.

Again - I strongly disagree on Caufield (23yo) being a downgrade as he has better projected points (64 pts/82g v.s 58pts/82g) than Necas (25yo) while playing on a TERRIBLE team and coming back from major shoulder surgery. Also, Slaf, at 19, is projected 12 pts behind Necas... even after the terrible start where he got 10 pts in 34 games. So I would dial it back a little bit on that front.
Caniac2000, habslife, Cabbie91 and 2 others liked this.

He thinks Necas is McDavid, MacKinnon or Matthews

No chance pens make this trade. no at all. anderson is one of the worst deals in the league. And makes more than Rakell.
Rakell had nearly 30 goals just last season. He may be playing bad this year but even considering that he is still playing way better than anderson.
A late third next year doesn't even come close to bridging that gap lol.

No... Caufield is just massively overvalued because of the fact that he plays for an original six team
