Starting the rebuild accidentally

Created by: Shaun80
Team: 2024-25 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2024
Published: Mar. 27, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Conroy trades a disgruntled Markstrom at the draft. No free agents that are an upgrade on our current players want to sign with the Flames, so he overpays Dillon to hopefully solidify our top 4 (it doesn’t work). Conroy still thinks this team can compete but the Vladar/Wolf tandem doesn't work out and Calgary doesn't have the offense to make up for it causing them to plummit in the standings, landing a top 5 pick in 2025.

Conroy drafts for team needs at the 2024 draft and continues his trend of acquiring bigger players. (Draft positions are based on Doms model at the Athletic)

8th Berkly Catton (Sorry everyone who wants Tij, can't pass him up)
22nd Beckett Sennecke
27th Maxim Masse
Two big right wingers to balance out the depth chart.
40th Dominik Badinka (I just think his name is fun to say)
63rd Harrison Brunicke
Same as above, two big RD, helps balances out the depth in the minors.

At the 2025 draft Calgary finally gets the potential #1C they haven't had since Joe Nieuwendyk.
4th Michael Misa

Kings pass. Can probably resign Talbot and Rittich for about 3m maybe slightly more and keep our 1st.

Kadri blocked a trade to the flames. He could change his mind.

I think a lot of fans will think this isn't fair, but I actually like it.

Kings get a proven 1A who will be solid for 2 years (while Kopitar is still here) at a cap friendly rate.

Flames get to finally give Wolf a shot at taking the starter role and more importantly assets to continue stocking the cupboards. The 50% retained might sting, but I see the value from both ends here.

I don't think the Flames will be a cap team in the forseeable future so the retention shouldn't hurt.

The Flames feel like where the Sharks were a bit ago, it's not super clear that they are tanking or rebuilding, if they still want to attempt the playoffs next season then I understand why they want to wait on burning it down just yet.

If Markstrom wants out, and I think he does, then the decision to rebuild is made for them. I'd say he's won them at least 5 games this season and I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but 10 less points in the standings and we're drafting 5th overall.

That is plenty, my issue is more does Markstrom have that in the tank for the next two seasons, can he be healthy and consistent (at around this age digression happens) but at $3M there is not many options to get that level of goaltender on that contract. I think it's a fair deal, and I could genuinely see Blake making that trade.

Yeah that's always the big question mark around older players, but LAs goaltending would actual get younger with Markstrom.

Markstrom has been good, all things considered

At $6mil, i can’t see anyone wanting him though
But if u guys are holding half….
that’s a different story- someone will bite
Maybe Jersey if LA isn’t interested??
Maybe the Leafs even?

There’s sure to be interest in Markstrom at $3mil imo

Heck, possibly even my Sabres
Not for our 1st though. Maybe for a lesser pick(s) &/or a prospect(s)
But the price would have to work for both sides,
bc we could always go the UFA route (which is likely imo, since we really need a backup for UPL more than we need a starter)

I think there will be a bunch of teams looking for goaltending this off season. Biggest hurdle is where is he willing to go. If it is a team like Jersey or Buffalo, maybe next years top ten protected 1st, or this years and we give you Vancouvers pick, something like that.

I don’t think anyone is giving you a pick in the top half of the 1st
He’s still a 34year old goalie
It’s hard to imagine a team giving up great value knowing it’s a short term player

Well, since those are the two guys I have my eye on for Los Angeles and Anaheim (with the Edmonton pick) at the back end of the first round, I commend you on your brilliance.

I would accept the Markstrom offer if made (which assumes that he waives his NMC). That's because I think it will cost closer to $4 million than $3 million to get both Talbot and Rittich, so Markstrom and Rittich isn't that much of a higher cost and probably works out better for the additional year.

Was going to go with Michael Hage with LAs pick, but I think he'll be gone.

Return seems light for 50%. I would probably want Turcotte included

Turcotte and a late 1st would still be light especially with retention.
