Not to pile on but...

1. Seider ain't signing 8 x $7.5M

2. Chicago ain't making that trade.

3. This is a personal opinion, but **** signing Debrusk. Dude pissed and moaned and threw a hissy fit because he didn't want to play for Cassidy. Guess who got fired and turned around and won a Cup 9 months later? Dude got healthy scratched after Cassidy left because he apparently can't show up to practice on time. (I'm guessing you don't get healthy scratched for the first offense, either) These are just the issues we know about...

It'll cost more than that to move Copp off the books.

Copp is a cap dump, and probably not one the hawks will be taking

Tampa Bay and the Hawks both decline. Tampa can't afford Maata's full cap hit. Winga need to retain 50%. Hawks aren't giving up a young prospect drafted in the 2nd round to take on the last 3 years of an overpaid Copp. Copp is a pure cap dump from the Hawks perspective. Wings pay the Hawks to take him.

laugh So Tampa can't afford Maatta at $3,000,000 but they can afford Hanifin at $7,000,000 or so they say. What's wrong with this picture.

LOL and who's the only player on Detroit with a +15 rating, Oh right Olli Maatta most of the rest have negative ratings.

If they sign Hanifin, they say bye bye to Stammer. Maata ain't close to Hanifin in terms of impact on the ice. I'm sure even a homer like you gets that.

A yes +\ - the stat we use to determine the playoffs, the inherent goodness of hockey players, and even for the enlightened among us the Calder.

Your bewilderment at why/how Tampa would be willing to make the cap work for one but not the other is pretty suggestive of something along those lines...

I actually don't mind plus/minus as a stat to compare teammates (It's ****ing useless for players on two different teams) but it still has its flaws.

For example, I remember Seider's rookie year, Blashill was obsessed with pulling the goalie even if we were down 3 or more. Near the end of the season, Seider was -10. Bally Detroit removed all empty net goals he was on the ice for and he became +10.

Sharks are a no I think. He is 28 and likely too old for long term plans. Unless they think they can flip him at the TDL for better picks and prospects aka like Duclair.

I was gonna agree... And then I saw that they're 100% full on retained salary slots next year. Oof.

What the **** was Grier thinking with that Hertl trade?!

Probably that it was an opportunity to get some decent assets for a player who seemed to want out (he was going to be 'talking about his future' in the offseason and SJHN editor/podcast guy Sheng Peng at several points when discussing that fact throughout the season suggested he believed Hertl would want to move on after the season) and wouldn't have been great by the time the team is ready to compete. Yes, he gave up the last retention slot, but if he had the slot to use at this year's deadline maybe he gets an extra 4th, and at next year's deadline he probably doesn't get more than a 3rd's worth of additional value on a trade for using the retention slot. I don't know what Hertl might've gotten without retention but he likely loses more than a 3rd and a 4th worth of value by not retaining on that deal. Also, if he uses the cap space properly taking on bad short term deals it could have a lot more value than a retention slot.

Hertl didn’t sign up for a rebuild and he wanted out. He had control of where he could be traded. So MG got what he could while respecting the player. I liked Hertl a lot and hated to see him go. With 20/20 vision, we likely should have trade him before resigning him. Better to trade them a year to soon than a year to late.

We get the a slot back after next year and who do we need to retain on? Maybe Granlund. Everyone else is on a decent contract that is movable. Logan and Vlasic aren’t going anywhere.
