Camp2024 Vets are getting nervous

Created by: Bricher33
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 2, 2024
Published: Apr. 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lines are not lines so much as kind of lines and kind of depth.
Not including any draft pick dude to the wild unknow of where we could be picking and I only see 2 maybe 3 guys that would be opening night guys. 4 if you count Demidov but he is locked up for another year.
The new GM's is going to have some tough call's and will be fielding calls about a number of players.

Ya he is a serious prospect.

There are some good pieces in there. They just need a true #1C and things will start falling into place. They have been using Jenner as a #1C but he is just a really good #3C.

Curious to see what they do. Maybe they would be a decent home for Lindholm. Lindholm + Jenner + Fantili is a decent trio. Could be a great trio if Fantilli turns into a #1C.

Fantilli will be the 1C next year, He was on his way to taking it before the calf. (ouch) Silly looks like a lock for a mid six problem child C and Voronkov once he gets some faceoff practice look to be anywhere from a low 2C to a high 4C. God willing we win the lottery this year the future down the middle in columbus could be Fantilli Celibrini Sillinger Voronkov. Jenner could move back to the wing and I don't know how many seasons his back has left in it. Dudes a warrior but the less miles we can put on him now the better. Without Celibrini the future core down the middle is sold but not wowing. KJ could be a C option also if he can put on some lbs. Kuraly could be trade bait in the off season or TDL along with Provo and Ollie. All depends on how the new GM see the future.

I am in the small camp that thinks Columbus should trade Jenner. They could get ALOT for him at the draft. Especially if they retain 50%. I understand having good vet leaders, but a competitor would pay a ton for Jenner. Something I strongly think they should consider.

Columbus is in a good situation. Like Buffalo, they have an abundance of good young players and prospects and need to decide which will form their core. The rest they should use to trade for fewer but better players when such opportunities present themselves. Signing free agents can help too.

IF we had someone ready to step up into his leadership shoes i would be ALL over moving him. BUT there isn't anyone yet. Now if someone steps up this season i might be open to moving him at the TDL or in the off season next year but not quite yet. If fantilli steps up like i think he might over the next year to year and a halfj then move him.

Protentional is such a dirty dirty word. It gives hope but it's the hope that kills ya.

Oh, they absolutely should move Jenner for all the obvious reasons (though there is no reason to retain 50% on a contract that cheap to begin with). The time to move him for the best return was this past deadline, tbh. But they won't for reasons unrelated to the on-ice product. They can't risk the optics and PR hit to a fanbase that's already angry. Plus there's the stadium series game coming up next March. No way they move the captain before the biggest league event the franchise has ever participated in. He genuinely means more to the franchise than whatever late first and prospect they might get.

I have never been particularly fond of him, and I think he became captain through attrition more than anything else. It's also not a surprise that the team suddenly looks like a competent hockey team when he's not playing 23 minutes a night in a position he's not suited, whether because he's out with a broken jaw or illness like the past two games. He's a good 3C but has no business at 1C between skill players he can't keep up with.

I think we'd promptly lose all those assets and more besides in attempting to trade for a replacement Jenner immediately afterward, and said replacement wouldn't be nearly as good a fit.

My problem with this line of thinking is that if the team is that badly affected by "let the other guy do it", then Fantilli is going to be heir apparent to that phenomenon as well.

Okay, but Fantilli is better suited to that position. Or at least will be as he matures. Jenner is a good workhorse who has done well as asked, but 1C on a good team is for a thoroughbred. We cannot be content with 1C Boone Jenner and think the team can in any way contend like that.

I'm not saying keep Jenner at #1C, just don't trade him away.

That's all I'm saying too. They are definitely not trading him even if they probably should by conventional wisdom, but he cannot be the 1C.

The guy they should work on trading is Laine.
He's probably not sticking around after that contract ends and frankly he's taking up space blocking younger players while always being hurt.
If they can take offers on him this offseason they should. It opens up a spot on the roaster, brings something back in return.
It doesn't looks so bad at the moment either considering what PLD has turned into. There use to be a pressure there, they moved PLD for him.... he has to perform. But that's kind of gone as PLD hasn't done anything but become a 35 point 8.5 mil contract.

Even if CBJ has to retain on Laine for 2 years, it's a smart move for a decent return.
You take that roster above, you add a top 5 pick this year to it and you start to need space for these guys to play. There should only be 2 older players in the top 9 of this team. Jenner as 3C and Gaudreau.
Gaudreau contract is simply because it's not moveable. 5 years at almost 10 mil isn't easy to move. That was a bad signing, but it's too late to fix it now.
