Accelerating the rebuild

Created by: Big_Papa20
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 10, 2024
Published: Apr. 11, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Florida trade: Montreal gets a young player with a raw skill set and good feet. He seems like he could fall under the same category as Montreals past draft day deals. Florida gets Tkachuks junior line mate, and they were dominant together. Maybe Tkachuk can save Dvos career the way Mack saved Drouins. Barron is a former first round defender and there is upside there but has been surpassed by Reinbacher, and Mailloux. A fresh start would be good for him. They get some draft capital to go with it which is definitely an area they are thin at.

Rangers trade: The Habs get yet again another first round pick who was drafted by none other then Jeff Gorton. Gorton knows the player we’ll haven taken him at 2nd overall and has acquired players he drafted (Andersson) since coming to Montreal. New York gets a young player that was a first round pick and could push for a roster spot this year or next on an ELC, which is valuable for a cap strapped team.

What do you think Kakko is actually worth in a trade?

I like BOTH of these deals. I know you're getting a lot of flack but these check a.lot of boxes for me.

1) Habs get bigger at forward
2) Habs acquire a few younger players who are former top 15 picks in the same age range as the other young players on the team
3) Lots of upside for the entire top 6

Who cares about futures 3-5 years from now. We need to get better now.

I don't value Kakko that much. He has potential but a late 1st is probably the max I'd be willing to give up which is close to the value of Mesar. If it's Mesar Habs probably add another later pick, 3rd or something, if it's a pick by its self then it's Winnipeg's 1st.

Kakkos value is mostly determined by the risk a team is willing to take with him, maybe you get a rebuilder who pays more to take that chance but I don't see teams lining up to give up a 1st ++ for him

So... I believe you need big body players who are good at defence in the playoffs on all of your lines.

Don't forget that Kakko's value is not determined in a vacuum. He is a young RW with size who plays well defensively and has scoring upside on a team that:

1) Is trying to win the Stanley Cup in the next 2-3 years
2) Has very few RWs in their pipeline

Mesar will not play on their team next year
Mesar doesn't have size

There is very little incentive for the Rangers to do this deal even if they believe Mesar is the better player long term.

his worth to NYR is greater than his trade value actually is. So whatever you think you would trade, add a decent piece to it

That's true but the Rangers aren't the only opinion that matters, Kakkos matters to. This ain't the old school league it used to be, if a player feels under utilized or that he's not being given a chance he will want out.

Iv always operated under the assumption that if Kakko gets traded it's only happening because of 3 options- He wants out - Rangers don't think he'll ever reach his ceiling and try to sell high - some team pays for his potential

In all three circumstances I only see a team giving up a late 1st and another piece. That other piece varies depending on which of those three options it is. If he wants out, that piece isn't that big - Rangers give up on him, means that piece isnt that big - if a team buys him for his potential, that piece is a good one 2nd or good prospect type piece.

Who knows what will happen but I don't see him being happy in NY if they keep him in that defensive third line role and his usefulness in that role vs what the player wants may force the Rangers hand eventually

I don't think Mesar is equal value but I also don't see many teams paying a premium for a bottom 6 defensive forward. My question has always been, how long is Kakko happy in that role? Eventually he either forces his way up the line up or out of NY and if it's out of NY then his value isn't what Rangers fans will like

He'll never be on the 4th line. One man's bottom 6 is another's middle 6 I guess?

You're right on that. I am in the camp with Rangers fans in thinking he can be a staple in a teams top 6 though, just needs a n extended chance in that role

He's a 2nd line RW in Montreal as of next season if we do this deal. Dach & Newhook will get him lots of pucks in the blue paint.

It could happen if we overpay. We have so many picks. We have to take a few swings, even if they aren't all homeruns.

Rangers have zero reasons to trade him so the point is moot. The only way they trade him is if it is an overpay that fills a need.

I get the organization has no reason to but if all he is to them is a bottom 6 forward than he may force their hand eventually. Dont know to many second overall picks that would be happy staying in that role long term

First off, Kakko is a good kid that works really hard and isn't ego driven by his draft position, plus he is an RFA with little to no leverage anyway. Secondly, I don't think Drury and the Rangers see him as only a bottom 6 forward. he came into the league in tough circumstances, playing in a bubble during the pandemic, plus he had a few injuries to deal with, but with that he is still a very responsible 200 foot forward that has a lot more upside to come in his offense. Since he came back from his injury this season he has been very good and having Wennburg at C also has helped. His future is bright, regardless of what trolls on this site post. The Rangers biggest need is at RW as well, so no way they trade him unless it was too good a deal to pass up and fills a need as they are trying to win a cup and draft picks don't help with that at all.
