Additional Details:
I wonder about a trade like this for CGY, who might hope to be back in the playoffs next season if they play their cards right in a weak western conference. This trade will happen if they can swap Markstrom and the WPG pick for the Devils' 10OA pick (and probably a 2nd), which means that they essentially swapped Markstrom for Matheson and dropping one spot in the draft + receiving a pick in the late 40s/early 50s

Calgary should keep the pick. They don't need to rush this Rebuild retool, whatever it is. They need #1 guys in multiple positions, none available where Winnipeg's pick is going to be IMO

And with NJD suggestion, I suggested Markstrom and Vancouver's pick(which probably isn't going to be to much later) for NJD 1st. Don't see it happening eithet

The fly in this ointment is thinking that the Devils are going to give up the tenth overall pick in this year's draft (never mind plus a second that they don't even own right now) for Markstrom and a pick in the mid-twenties. And the Calgary pick could be eighth overall, depending upon what happens tonight.

Nine of the top 14 teams in the League are from the "weak Western Conference," and two more (plus potentially Seattle) finished ahead of the Flames this season.

Matheson doesn't even come close to getting you from pick ~#25 to pick #9.

    Brutal offer

Also weak western conference? The West has won the last 2 cups and all the teams at the top look like Juggernauts. Right now the West is way stronger than the East

Oh really? You think someone would give up a valuable asset for him just because he racked up a bunch of points on the man advantage? Last I checked Gostisbehere only returned a 3rd and same with Gustafsson after his 60 point season. He probably won't be on your 1st PP unit next season and will have at most 30 points. I don't blame Habs fans for trying to sell high on him but anyone with any sort of understanding of hockey knows he is a liability at 5v5

So your argument is nothing? You call my take trash and then when I prove it right you revert to insults?

Legitimately insane takes on Matheson here. Matheson ALONE is worth #9. I can’t even believe there’s people arguing that. He literally plays the top 5 hardest minutes in the league while being top 10 in points. On a steal of a contract for 2 more years. Like come on.

Why argue? I disagree. You can't prove an opinion. And I know better than to engage with the likes of you. Enjoy!

EA pro's know best. He wasn't as good in NHL2022. So he's a flash in the pan. Not enough x-factor icons.

    Sure I can.

5v5 out of ~250 defensemen that have played at least 300 minutes he ranks 2nd in SCA and 13th is SCA/60, he ranks 24th in xGA/60 and 9th is CA/60. Despite having 62 points this season only has 21 points at 5v5 and 29 points on the PP, despite playing over 1100 more minutes at 5v5. his other 12 points are split between 6v5, 5v6, and PK.

..and how many games did you watch of the 26th overall Canadiens with a minus 53 goal diff??

this is a bit excessive, I'd say he's worth around a 12-17 pick

I watched my fair share of games. The issue is outside of Savard all of the Habs defensemen did quite a bit better than him.

Lmao nobody is giving you a top 50 pick for him without retention. Maybe some dumb GM will toss you a late 2nd then quickly regret it like Detroit did with Leddy.
