2024-2025 Roster Possibilities

Created by: NJTM
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 19, 2024
Published: Apr. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is my potential roster for the Devils 2024-2025 season.
There’s room to give Jake DeBrusk a slight raise if it is required. I figured $5.75M per season was a fair place to start.
The idea is to take advantage of teams that are going to be in a cap crunch and to potentially get a discount on players in trades. Linus Ullmark and Nicolas Hague should not get full value back in a trade. Those teams are strained for cap space and have to unload players.
Left out: sign Luke Hughes to his 8 year, $8M contract one year in advance (this can be done during the season as well). Make the contract identical to his brother’s. Get it done well in advance.

The 2025 pick is conditional. Boston will receive the lower second round pick in 2025 between NJD and WPG. In the event the 2025 NJD second round pick goes to MTL (this pick is potentially tied up in the Jake Allen trade), Boston will receive the 2025 WPG 2nd round pick.

Boston isn't strained for cap and Jersey isn't the only team looking for a goalie. They have 25 mil in cap space (with <5 of that going to Swayman). Ullmark for a 2nd doesn't move the needle enough to not just keep him through the end of the deal. If a team wants a year of Ullmark plus negotiating priority through July 2025, it's more.

How much do you think the Devils would have to give up if they tried for Swayman?

I gave it further thought. If the devils would part with a B tier prospect, they could forego the trade with the sharks to acquire the extra draft pick to do this. Either avenue is acceptable. Zeev Buium may not be available at 10th overall.

I’m not opposed to putting conditions on the 2025 1st round pick. It would be a compromise. The conditions would be tied to potential playoff performance and/or whether or not Ullmark signs an extension in New Jersey. This would be the only draft pick in the trade if it can be a potential first round pick.

As an aside, the original deal had two second round picks in it. Boston could pretty easily consolidate those draft picks to move into the first round of 2024 or 2025. Don’t be afraid of being a little creative.

I have changed my mind. You can take these two second rounders and trade them to consolidate them into a first round pick in either 2024 or 2025. That’ll be the first rounder you want. Everyone can be happy.

I never saw Swayman being available. The only way he becomes available in my opinion is if his arbitration hearing gets ugly. Boston would be foolish to let it get to that hearing though. I don’t imagine that negotiation is going to be contentious.
