Description
I was trying to line up management/ownership’s interest in adding assets this summer towards competing (which I’m nervous about because I’m all-in on one season of team tank because of the Montreal pick scenario requiring a top ten draft pick or else we lose the higher of the Florida 1st and our own).

I also want to tank for one season to try to land a first line centre.

Anyways it was harder than I thought to try to find a trade that looks like adding assets but is really just filling up cap space short term w marginal players. Not as many short term cap liabilities to trade for on cap strapped teams this offseason.

I like the Islanders concept because Pageau fills something of a need. I believe he is a good vet. The cap hit isn’t too long. And the GM is more likely to trade him at marginal value / cap liability than most GMs.

I made the Markstrom deal more realistic / based off the old Cory Schneider deal.

I really dislike Ohkoochook at this point but he’s on the team I guess.

As I look at this before pressing “publish” I actually don’t like the Wahlstrom rehab gamble. It would mean Coronato in the minors and I think Coronato is entering that phase of his career where the minors will be over-ripening / making him wilt

Markstrom isn't the only goalie out there...but he may be the oldest one out there, and the biggest cap hit. All the reasons not to spend a 1st on him and another guy you are trying to move.

Why are you using a 25 year old star goalie as a comp?

A more accurate comp to unretained Markstrom would be when Vegas traded Marc Andre Fleury to Chicago

I’m pretty sure that the NJD GM agrees with you about there being other goalies out there. But I believe, when push comes to shove, the 24 first will be the asset moved by NJ. Could be a 25 first though.

The problem with the 10th overall pick is, there is no goalie I deem worth that in a deal outside of Askarov, but I imagine NSH is moving on from Saros to move to Askarov. The issue with solid goalies like Ullmark and Saros are neither can be extended before the draft, so with no guarantees, I can't in good consciousness move that pick without a guarantee. Any talk of "well they can talk about a deal before" means nothing as there is no legal recourse to an agent pulling out of a verbal agreement.

I don't see NJ giving us that pick for Markstrom without a 50% retention attached, and even then I'm not sure it's a good deal for them.

Mangiapane with retention is probably worth a 2nd at best.

If the 10th OA asset is just too valuable, which is fair, you just risk not getting a goalie before the next season starts. I like the gamble; ignore the 24 draft as a deadline, make your pick, and then start talking to the teams with goalies to trade.

It’s the kind of risk that puts the GM’s job at stake though, if a trade doesn’t come together, and you enter the season without a strong goaltending duo on paper, that’s the end of your job if you don’t ascend to the contender status that NJD has/should have.

They still have a 2025 1st, I don't believe the focus should be on the 10th overall. I do think there are goalies that will cost less than a 1st like a Gustavsson from Minnesota who at least is younger. Minn could move on to make way for Wallstedt to get time behind Fleury. Markstrom is honestly one of the worst options out there due to age and contract.

I like Gustavsson. Yup a 2025 first this offseason is a really valuable asset. I like when contenders use their first round pick in the offseason rather than at the deadline. You get a way better player for longer that way.
