I can see the Hawks having interest in Smith, but don't see them paying that much for him - even with retention. The Rangers easily decline. Why are they giving up a 1st to add more expensive player w/ an extra year on his deal? The only reason the Rangers trade Goodrow is to clear cap space. This deal adds cap hit to the Rangers

Lower your expectations. Retaining on Smith doesn't increase the return from Hawks. They don't need retention, they are not a cap team and not a contender.

Rangers do not need to pay to get rid of Goodrow, he is buyout friendly.

I agree with what you are saying but with the amount cap space the Hawks have available it would make more sense for Davidson just to swallow the full cap hit and send nothing back in return. Good old future considerations on the move again.

I agree PIT doesn't touch it. They have Eller who is much better and are already paying Acciari too. If a playoff team valued Goodrow's production and had the cap to accommodate him they can acquire him for a cheap price. NYR doesn't need to move a first rounder to dump him by any means.

If Nazar winds up as the 2C instead of Dickinson, I could definitely see a 2nd line of Foligno/Nazar/Smith and then Reichel and AA on Dickinson's wings. Same set-up if Hawks get Celebrini and he turns pro instead of returning to college. In that case, Nazar starts out in Rockford.

Of course, the Hawks could sign a UFA instead and then Smith isn't really needed.
