3 way deal

Team: 2024-25 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2024
Published: Apr. 28, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Calgary should have no problem filling in guys on the D core through FA as long as they're trying to lose, and can easily overpay a vet or two and trade them at deadline for picks
Trades
CGY
  1. Östlund, Noah
  2. Rosén, Isak
  3. Savoie, Matthew
  4. 2026 1st round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Calgary is stuck between a rock and a hard place with their current roster construction. No big name prospects, no top end talent, bad contracts, the whole 9 yards for a team destined to enter a massive rebuild. With this trade, they offload the Weeger deal and remove any potential mess that would come from an Andersson extension while getting back 3 futures with incredible upside and a first.
BUF
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
  2. Weegar, MacKenzie

Skips over Buffalo for Toronto in 3 way deal (Sabres acquire Marner)

Whether you blame Marner alone or the coach or the entire team is irrelevant, the Leafs have folded yet again under the pressure of the playoffs. The biggest on ice factor for that result is (imo) the guy who couldn't generate any physicality, couldn't string a pass together despite being one of the best playmakers in the regular season, and is getting paid as much as two impact defensemen. This isn't calling Marner a terrible player, it's just pointing out that it's unacceptable to keep him around and extend him if you're the Leafs after that performance. Replacing a glorified penalty killer with two top 4 defense with some term (a lot of term in the case of Weeger) and opening up options to refresh the top 6 is vital.

I think the return is good. I would prefer having BUF 2024 1st rounder in CAL.

The only thing I think is troublsome is the Dcore of CAL after this trade

All that for Marner huh. Yeah Buffalo isn’t doing that.

What would Buffalo want Marner for? another talented softy who doesn’t hit anything just like the rest of the team they already have? You encounter a team like Boston and this is what happens to players like that. Besides, this is the kind of package you put together to acquire a player like Matt Tkachuk, a physical difference maker being brought into a team that certainly needs one. But Florida isn’t giving him up, and this is more than Brady Tkachuk would be worth too. But that’s what Ottawa would want in return for him. Either way Marner doesn’t do that, Both sides say no.

Calgary declines. Weegar is one of the last players they'd even think about trading. In a quick retool you keep your best veterans with term unless you get a crazy good offer for one of them. Andersson could be available if there was one good young prospect who isn't a little guy or if it was this year's pick instead of 2026.

Rosen Ostlund and Savoie are all small forwards the Flames already have too many of those. You need to find a big mean team that already has the size/grit/compete angles well covered but could use a little (pun intended) more quickness/skill/agility.
