Bad trade for Carolina, Samuelsson put up an abysmal 29 Points in 150 Games and is expensive, Necas on the other hand is a young player who can still grow

Samuelsson is a defensive d man. I'm not sure why you're looking at point totals. His contract is pretty fair value. GMs really love guys like him in the lineup. He's been pretty injury prone lately though.

Still, To consider adding him to my lineup at that price, He would need at least 25 Points in a season, A team can get a 30 Point defensemen at Samuelsson's Price, Plus Skejci could get that deal too

If Necas is traded for a defenseman I hope it is for a righty not a lefty. There's also no way the Canes pay Guentzel 10/year for 8 years, so if that is his asking price they will just let him walk and re-sign Necas with that money.

Canes do not need LHD. If they are moving Necas, they are getting an equivalent or better forward coming back.

I feel like using point totals for a non-top pairing defensive minded guy makes no sense? By this logic guys like Klingberg, Ghost and De-Angelo should all be worth $4-6 million dollars long-term. Samuelsson does his job well, he's just struggled in Buffalo's abysmal defensive system and dealt with injuries. He's still worth a late 1st + a 3rd in my eyes

He's paid to be a big defensive guy. Not put up points.

He's a Ryan Lindgren / Chris Tanev style d man. Don't know why you're so focused on points.

Is Ghostisbehere worth more than Jacob Slavin in your mind?

I can see the logic of this deal from a long-term standpoint. Unless I'm mistaken Nishkin is also a RD meaning him and Morrow are going to be taking up those top 2 spots for the next 6-8 years hopefully, Orlov is only going to get older and Slavin is due for a big pay day that may be out of Carolina's range (I'm confident they re-sign him though). Samuelsson essentially locks down that LD 2 spot for the next 4-6 years due to his younger age. I do feel as if the Canes would be better off grabbing a 2C or keeping Necas (having KK as your 2C is a terrible idea) but I see the long-term logic in this deal

Ghost is worth 4-6 Million, DeAngelo is just under 3 Million, And Klingberg is not doing good

Signing a 31 year old, bad defensively Shayne Ghostisbehere to 5-6 million long-term is just a recipe for disaster, I can get around 4-4.5 million but anything higher makes no sense. DeAngelo doesn't even play most of the time anymore and Klingberg was rough even before this year. He was never worth anything more than 5 million and the Stars dodged a bullet by not signing him long-term at his peak

Slavin is a 2-Way D, Who is worth 6-7 Million, Ghost is a Offensive Defensemen Worth 5-6 Million, Slavin is just more valuable than Ghost

Zadorov is a good example of a defensemen who deserves more than Samuelsson, Zadorov is still a top defensemen who is worth the amount of Money samuelsson is making rn

So the Canes get a long term 3LD (since Nikishin is an LD) who blocks any prospect that might be better. I love Samuelsson, but it’s not worth losing all the offense that Necas would bring.

But Zadorov is only on pace for 21 points?? How does this fit your argument of points being important for d-men who are defensive minded. By your logic Zadorov isn't worth that money either

He is defensive dman...not counted on for offense. Not put on ice in offensive situations. Used when protecting a lead.

Defensive dmen are tough to value, but every team needs them.

Was making a general, but valuable point about generating values based on points.

Carolina does not need someone like samuelsson due to slavin, plus They can just resign Skejci

Imo guentzel is the best thing to happen to the Canes in a very long time. he could easily get less but that's about what your 100 point pace forwards get id imagine
