Description
My first prediction is the Blues will attempt to move up in the draft to secure a top defensive prospect. I think it's doable, and definitely something the Blues need to do. Getting one of Dickinson, Buium, or Silayev would be massive for the retool.

Next, I think one of Faulk or Krug will be moved. Krug is almost impossible to move even at 50% retained due to his full NTC. Faulk (who also has a full NTC) should have a solid amount of value especially if the Blues retain on him. I think the Blues have faith in Kessel to play top 4 minutes next year and I think he will succeed in that role. If I had to guess Krug will be moved the second his full NTC turns into a partial NTC.

I also think the Blues will look to add a reclamation project. Army loves doing that and I'm sure he'll find some player to bring in to fill that category.

The Blues shouldn't be focused on winning this upcoming season. They need to focus on the development of the younger players. It would be great if Neighbours establishes himself as a top line player next to Thomas. I think Bolduc could do that as well. Thomas has a rare ability to make any player he plays with better, so keep putting our young players with him. Next, put Dvorsky in a position to succeed. If he's not in a prominent role, play him huge minutes in the AHL. Give Dean a look out of camp but I think it would be best for his long term development to get another year in the AHL.

Although he's not really young, I think Sylvegard makes the team. I'll be curious to see how good of a player he is.

As for young dmen, I'd like to see Kessel get full time top 4 minutes and see if he can handle it. I think he will be able to and will be an important part of the Blues defense for a long time. Next up I'd like to see Perunovich take over the top powerplay for the entire year and play with Parayko in certain situations. If he fails in that role, the Blues could plug in Johannesson who they just signed. I'd also like to see Tucker in a full time role but he NEEDS to stay on the left side. He simply doesn't have the speed to play on the right.

Lastly, I think Buch will get a long term extension. It's just such an Army thing to do. I personally think it's a big mistake but we'll see. My worry is by the time the Blues are truly ready to compete, Buch will be out of his prime and playing like Schenn is now. For this AGM, I decided to trade Buch anyway just to see what the trade would look like. Buch would have to sign an extension with whatever team traded for him.

As a Blues fan, is there any player you hope the Blues acquire this offseason?

Also, as we get closer to the draft, who are your initial draft targets?

1.
STL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
The Blues need to find a way to trade up to get one of the top defensive players in this draft. New Jersey is the most likely team that will move back as they don't need any more defensive prospects and could really use a forward and some extra picks. They get a cheap, reliable, 3C in Hayes as well.
NJD
  1. Hayes, Kevin ($1,571,429 retained)
  2. 2024 1st round pick (STL)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (STL)
2.
STL
  1. 2025 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
I think Faulk is the most likely Blues dman to get moved this offseason. Boston could use more of a puck moving defender and they would get Faulk for cheap.
BOS
  1. Faulk, Justin ($2,000,000 retained)
3.
STL
  1. Boucher, Tyler
Additional Details:
Struggling player swap. Everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong for Boucher in Ottawa. He could benefit from a change of scenery and no longer having any expectations based on his draft status. The same goes for Alexandrov who would add some speed and skill to Ottawas bottom 6.
4.
STL
  1. Komarov, Vsevolod
  2. Krebs, Peyton [RFA Rights]
  3. 2024 1st round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Buffalo gets a sure fire top line winger. The Blues get a high pick in this draft along with a really underrated RHD prospect and a forward in need of a change of scenery.

Good luck prying komarov from the Sabres. Especially for a rental.

Wrong team. Boston’s right side is all signed and set for the next few years.

They need a 3rd pairing LD.

And no that does not mean Krug,

I like it from Devils side. Also worth mentioning the Hayes/Fitzgerald connection (cousins).

Not gonna lie, I am genuinely baffled at how so many in the Blues bubble imagine Kessel is close to being a legit top 4 guy. I'd much sooner bet on Faulk resuming normal service given the summer to fully heal than I would on Kessel being anything more than a 6th/7th D caliber player next season. He's an absolute horror show when the puck is on his stick.

Blues hockey is about reducing silly mistakes and controlling the puck. Kessel keeps us defending defending defending.

I don't think the Sabres and Blues are good trade partners at this point. Nothing against Buchnevich but I don't think a rental is in their thought process.

And much to the dismay of some in Sabreland, I find it hard to believe their focus will be on a top-six forward as their real weakness was at 3C and fourth line.

It says in the description that in any Buch trade he would have to sign an extension. Obviously this trade wouldn't happen if he was just a rental.

I know you're not a fan of Kessel at all but I personally see a lot in his game that I like. He has been one of the only defenders that when paired with Krug still performed well. I think he has more offense to his game than what he showed last year. At the least it doesn't hurt to give him a run in the top 4 next year like I said they shouldn't be worried about winning. If he sucks in the top 4 role then you look for someone to replace him.

Fair, I just saw a Boston fan saying they wanted a puck moving RHD and figured that Faulk for cheap would be a great fit. I agree Krug likely won't be going back to Boston unless he gets bought out by the Blues.

Point taken, however I usually don't read such long descriptions. Secondly, I really don't think the Sabres' main focus is on a top-six/top-line winger (although the favorable deal might be tempting) and like Woj said, the Sabres are pretty high on Komarov, a good-sized, RHD whose two-way game is developing nicely. And he was just named QMJHL defensive player of the year.

He had next to no offense this season. And technically more like negative offense since he constantly costs us zone possession with hideous mistakes. And saying he performed well with Krug is extremely generous.

Also, where is this bizatre concept of winning not mattering come from? Winning absolutely matters and there's no reason this team cannot be a playoff team next season with a few specific alterations. Knowing it's not time to contend yet does not = winning doesn't matter.

It can definitely hurt to play Kessel top 4 next season.
