Mitch Marner Middle-Man

Created by: HCSG
Team: 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: May 6, 2024
Published: May 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Worth it? Less Retention? Would Chicago consider the notion in the first place? I can't decide.

It's mostly one-year moves for a couple First Rounders. One year of Retaining on Marner, one year "lost" on Athanasiou, one year (less, probably) of Smith. Chicago aren't doing much in one year anyway.

Graves is the real cost of the 2 picks in the end.

Oh: PIT sends something to Toronto. I'm undecided as to what or who. Jarry? Haha.

CHI absolutely accepts. But TOR will not have to pay anyone to take Marner.

#MakeCapFriendlyGreatAgain?

Yeah, the Leafs need more. But this is the part of the year where the rest of the league feasts on Toronto's corpse! A time-honoured tradition. You don't like it, be a fan of a different team. wink

Have you not been paying attention to this site? According to fans on here, Marner is negative value.

As a Hawks fan...Leafs aren't doing this, BUT I will say...you're right that the Hawks can absolutely be a 1 year middleman to help assist in a trade.

This is actually one of the things I very much like about this site. This is a horrible idea, but it might lead to a good one eventually. We can 100% take 1 year of cap space for the right price. Open up options for TOR to make something happen for Marner because of this NMC.

If I was a fan of a different team, I wouldn't care about the Leafs. Anyone taking time out of their day to make sure they can get a stab in on leaf fans for some kicks is part of the problem in society. What a sad world we live in.

1 year of Marner at 50% would have absolutely massive value. The bulk of which would go to TO. Of course no one will agree with that. But this is cap friendly, so the Hawks fans in this instance likely think they should get a top prospect and a 1st to retain while TO gets a 3rd for Marner.

Pens and hawks take this but no way would the leafs do that. Unless they are getting someone like Crosby from the pens.

A bare minimum 100% of the made-up nonsense I post on this site are exactly those horrible ideas I am absolutely sure make no sense on their face but feel might contain some buried nugget of genuinely interesting possibility. If I can't get something out of my head but I also can't make it work, that's when I show up here to throw it out and see where it goes.

I understand how you feel. I was absolutely furious when Patrick Kane got a 2nd round pick because he was able to choose his destiny and he used the rights he earned. I was upset because the other side didn't give the value that I thought my player was worth. Marner at 50% would be one of the best contracts in the NHL. The NYR paid Patrick Kane a WHOPPING ~$168k for his services. And a 2nd rounder is all we could get?!?!

It's a tough spot. Toronto Media is doing you/him zero favors. The fact that Marner wouldn't take the presser and that market keeps rubbing it in by replaying over and over again Nylander (of all people...talk about ironic) yelling at Marner about This isn't Juniors Bro! Hawks can play a role. Treliving will go shopping for partners if Marner is actually the one going...he does have a full NMC and can stay if he wants. I actually think that's what should happen. Value will be very hard to find right now for either JT or Marner.

Kane had his worst ever season and was in his mid 30's. Marner is 27 and could still see his best seasons ahead. These are not comparable situations.

They're both 1 year (1 playoff run) contracts and one of them can drive a line by himself and a proven playoff performer...you're right...they're not comparable.

Hawks sign none of those UFAs. Tyler Johnson already eluded to wanting to head to a contender.

While I don't see the Leafs having to pay to trade Marner, I think that they are in a tight spot. For a team like Chicago to get him, they would probably have to offer mid-tier prospects and a 2nd. Not saying that as a Hawks fan, but everyone seems to know that the Leafs will be looking to offload one or more of their big 4. That diminishes value, similar to everyone knowing Kane was leaving. The power of the NTC will play a huge factor. Hypothetically, if Marner says "I will only accept a deal to Chicago to set up Bedard", the Leafs lose leverage and may get Teply, Phillips, and a 2nd.

Just my opinion

The core problem with Mitch Marner and the real reason there's so much negative noise around him is just how incomparable they really are where it seems to count.
