Fixing up Chicago

Description
Just my opinion from a non-Blackhawk fan.

The Jones-Marner trade may be underwhelming for Toronto fans, but people seem to forget how much Seth Jones is valued by old-school GMs. The Leafs are also desperate for a defenseman because they have absolutely no depth.

Ian Cole can be a good 3D (6.5 defensive rating) for a season while other defensemen are developing, and Roy is a solid 2D (6.2 defensive rating).

I also revamped the bottom-6, and it actually looks like an above-average unit. Teddy Blueger had a 3.3 defensive rating but was underwhelming offensively; he is the ideal bottom-6 center. Jake Debrusk is a two-way forward who could really be a risk-reward player for Chicago. I do believe that he would command more than 4.5 million, but he had a down year compared to the one before.

Finally, I had Chicago drafting a defenseman, which might anger some Hawks fans, but I feel like it's the bigger need after trading away Seth Jones. Also, Demidov will be in a similar situation as Michkov, although he hasn't shown as much at the KHL level. Additionally, the Hawks could potentially acquire a forward next draft or with their later pick that could help them sooner.

Edit: I changed Matt Roy's contract to 4.5m

For those that don't know what defensive rating is:

Defensive Rating: A weighted combination of blocked shots, faceoffs, penalties taken, expected goals against impact at five-on-five, goals against impact at five-on-five, penalty kill impact and usage.

Roy is not signing for that term or amount.

As far as the Marner trade I'm not a fan of jones and I would prefer to Keep Marner unless hes not willing to take a home town discount or they can get a package of young talent or a cheaper top end D or G

I changed his salary, I just don't think he will get any above 4.5m because of his offensive game and I don't think Chicago is willing to give a long term contract to a 29 year old, it's not smart.

I don't see how we could draft Levshunov. If a Marner trade happened (Which it won't and shouldn't) it would be after we draft Levshunov, which means Seth Jones would still be on the team. Our D Depth would be Vlasic, Korch, Jones, Rinzel, Murphy, Kaiser, EDM, Allan, and Phillips. Our forward core is very bare after Bedard. I'd say the only 2 major prospects are Moore and Nazar, that's it. Demidov is clear and I'd take a 100-point scorer over another fringe number 2 top pairing d man.

Demidov hasn't been seeing KHL action because he has been vocal about coming to play in North America and breaking his contract. It's sort of his punishment and It could happen again next year unless he comes to North America which I could see. Also he has played 4 games in the KHL and averaged 3 minutes in ice time.... another punishment for not signing long term in Russia

Other Hawk fans may have different views, but IMO there are solid reasons the Hawks should pass:
1. Marner is 9 years older than Bedard. He doesn't fit the trajectory of what has been to date a very purposeful, deliberate rebuild. At some point the Hawks may need to go after a FA, but not until they're closer and know what pieces they're missing. For example, if the pick is Demidov and he works out, I'm thrilled I didn't sign up for Marner at $12.5 till he's 36.
2. Hawks gave to hope that - ala Jack Hughes - Bedard takes a discount to have a stronger team around him. Marner will presumably demand over $12 million. What do you pay Bedard then? $15? Nobody wants to replicate the Leafs' issues with a top-heavy salary structure.
3. Jones is not the albatross people assume. He's overpaid by $2 million or so, but that's not a big deal for the Hawks. And without him there's very little high-end experience on the back end. Would Vlasic have developed as well as he has without Jones?

All the picks in the Jones/Marner deal are '24 picks, so the trade happens pre-draft. Which means no extension in place for Marner, so Hawka definitely decline anyway.

Hawks trading Jones for Marner with no extension in place would be a huge mistake. Roy is getting at least $5m AAV. And it's probably $6m or more to take a shorter term deal w/ Chicago. No need for Cole. Kaiser or DelMastro will play 3rd pair LD. And Levshunov isn't NHL ready yet either.
