Marner trade and waives for LA

Created by: PodGoalzin99
Team: 2024-25 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2024
Published: May 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don’t necessarily think a marner trade will happen but if it did i feel like LA could work? I think adding an elite offensive threat to LA with byfield breaking out could give them a lethal offense(and leave the goddamn 1-3-1 in the dust). Bridge Byfield to make the cap work and when you need to extend him doughty/danault are coming off books and can use that money to extend.

Both struggling players that could benefit from change

LAK
  1. Marner, Mitchell ($3,597,990 retained)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
With marner needing to waive his nmc and having a high salary toronto would def need to retain especially if marner wanted to go to la
TOR
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur [RFA Rights]
  2. Spence, Jordan [RFA Rights]
  3. 2025 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
LA has an elite ofd in clarke so spence isnt really needed as clarke most likely makes roster next year and will take pp 2 time, and toronto could use another offensive minded D and kaliyev clearly needs a change of scenery. I think first is fair for salary retention and would be top 10 protected. Kings fans may not want to part with it but even with all the stigma around marner he is still an elite offensive player
3.
LAK
  1. Ullmark, Linus ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Boston probably signs sway to a long term extension to be the #1 and could use a center prospect in there very bare prospect pool and a pick for their depleted stock. Boston wouldnt be the one retaining id say Utah/ARZ would with their ridiculous amount of cap and would take the 3rd
BOS
  1. Hughes, Jack [Reserve List]
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (LAK)
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Kings need a true #1 and ullmark is still a great #1

No 1st no Ullmark, jack hughes is also not the type of prospect they want bruins want someone with 1-2C potential Hughes is definitely more projected to be a defensive minded high energy 3C

Why would the Leafs retain though? They are sending a superstar to LA and aren't getting a single impact player back. You got the trade set up as a rental trade which is fair but the package is underwhelming for a full-year rental of Marner's caliber, especially with retention.

I like the idea of the Marner deal, but to not re-sign Roy (which is likely happening and in my mind ok) and to let go Spence, is pretty risky.
I'd like to see the Kings RD with Dewy, Clarke and Spence next year.
If Ullmark decides to waive for LA this time, we should take him.

Thats fair i just feel like clarke and spence are similar type of players and that clarke has just a way higher ceiling and skill set and neither of them i feel would thrive in 3rd pairing roles and one of them likely not being PP, i think you just go with your future star D-Man in clarke and bring in a vet for that bottom pair

I don't hate the idea of trading Spence but it would just suck to lose him. Its a similar situation as with Durzi last year, I cannot imagine that the Kings would do that once again just with Spence.
I think with Clarke's offenisve skillset, he at least will be in the 2nd PP unit. There will be an era after Doughty, so afterwards it would be great to have Clarke and Spence to work further with

Boston declines. No value there at all.

Your 1st this year will do it.
