Compete the Following Year

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If we don't do a lot this offseason, it is fine honestly, I think waiting for the 2025-2026 season to make a push is the best.

The line-up below is what I might envision our opening-night roster to be like, but of course changing a lot throughout the season. It's very un-flashy, but patience is key.

I see Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak fetching each a 2nd or 3rd round pick at the deadline with a 3rd team doing some salary retention. I believe Kovacevic can also fetch at least a 3rd without retention.

I see Michael Pezzetta being traded for a 4th or 5th rounder at the trade deadline for grit and locker-room purposes.

I see David Savard being traded for a 1st, with the Habs using their last retention slot to maximize the return. (I hope we resign David Savard in the 2025 off-season, so he can finish out his career as a Montreal Canadien and be our 7th D-man)

(It should be clear, that all of the above trades will only happen if players are healthy, and performing decently. eg. Dvorak and Armia are around 0.38ppg, Pezzeta is 0.18ppg, and David Savard is the shot blocking master without getting hurt.)

As all of those roster spots begin freeing up, then Joshua Roy can be called up and d-men Mailloux and Reinbacher will also get more playing time in the NHL.

I see Jordan Harris being traded in the 2025 off-season before the draft, in return for a late 1st rounder or an early 2nd rounder, if he can continue his development by playing in at least 70 games, score 6 goals along with 20 assists.

Sign Extensions (or after play-offs for Savard):
-Slafkovsky: 8 years 7,775,000 AAV = 62.2m (with 2,020,000 signing bonus for every season & M-NTC (10 team no trade list) for the final 4 years of his contract .)
-Kaiden Guhle: 6 years 5,950,000 AAV = 35.7m (with a 2,100,000 signing bonus for his first and last season & M-NTC (5 team no trade list) for the last two seasons of his contract.)
-David Savard: 4 years 1,750,000 AAV = 7m (with a Full NMC and 1,000,000 each year as a base salary + 3,000,000 initial signing bonus)

I should clarify, compete to get into the play offs in the 2025-2026 season. Not to win the cup.

Veleno can be had for a lot cheaper that what is being offered here. But there is no incentive for a team like Detroit to trade a player like Mazur who is near NHL ready for futures when they themselves are looking to compete for the playoffs and more importantly can use a player like him.

That would be a NO from Detroit.

If Mazur, is untouchable, which prospects are.
Or are the wings also not willing to move Veleno?
(Could also move the Colorado 2nd to match a lower value return)

I think they would move veleno for the right price, mazur just doesn't seem like someone they would move, he's the type of player they need. Wings have plenty of prospects, but no point in selling a prospect for a pick to restart the process

Problem with Mazur is Detroit has a ton of small wingers and while he's not big, he plays with an edge. He's not a Top 5 prospect for Detroit, but he's the only thing remotely close to a physical/agitating winger in our entire organization.

Kinda why I expect us to draft MBN or Chernyshov.
