Tavares Waives for Buyout

Created by: DrumMan44
Team: 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There's a lot of back-and-forth on this and I think ultimately this is a pretty fair trade, if a little favorable to Toronto.

Scenario: Toronto makes it clear to Tavares that they are moving on and he will not be extending in the summer of 2025. They offer to trade him to Chicago, who buys him out of his deal. He is then a free agent and can choose to go wherever he wants.

Chicago slightly upgrades their very early 2nd round pick for a mid-level first round pick. Toronto sheds $11 million in space cleanly while only giving up 11 spaces in the draft.

Holmberg is an interesting player who could carve out a role in Chicago.

Quite a silly scenario you laid out. Players have no expectation that will be resigned when their UFA contract expire. Teams have no expectations that a UFA will necessarily resign with them.
Nothing in for NMC Tavares.

What exactly is silly about this? If Toronto wants to re-tool and free up $11 million in cap space, this is a fairly painless way to do so. The discussion surrounding Tavares seems to be surrounding his no movement clause. If he won't waive it to go to another team, this might be the only way to get him to do so: by buying him out so he can punch his own ticket.

If he won't waive to go to another team, why would he waive to get boughtout? You do realize he would be losing money as well?

Instead of paying a 1st to dump Tavares, the Leafs could acquire one or a player if they just retain some. Or they could keep him his he's still a useful player. It's not like they have a 2C lined up to replace him.

10m for a jump in 12 spots seems steep, but it aint my money. So spend away, get those picks.

As far as the Anders Lee move, love it. Moving for 18oa to 54oa seems steep, I'd be fine with sending another pick back, Example would be next years 3rd round pick.

Thanks for confirming my explanation. Tavares has NO motivation too waive. What's so hard to understand that. Leafs can't buy him, as his buyout costs almost 11m.
Punch his own ticket? He has one with the Leafs....where he wants to play for one last playoff run with his team.

Hawks don't make that Tavares deal. A buyout costs the Hawks $7.6m in real money. Moving from 34 to 23 in a weak draft isn't worth $7+ million. As for the Isles trade, the value is probably about right but I doubt the Isles use that 1st to move Lee out. Two 2nd's is much more likely.

It will cost Toronto more than 11 spots in the draft to free up $11M in cap space for a player that is roughly worth a $6M cap hit. 11 spots is nothing and no team is doing Toronto or any team any favors.

I figured it would just be easier to read if there weren't 8 posts saying:

Why did I number them? I don't know.
