I really have a bad feeling about this Leafs offseason. Rebuilding your team in free agency is NEVER a good idea, and the Leafs are going to do it with a guy who just gave out contracts with too much money and term to Huberdeau, Kadri, Kampf, among others. On top of that, they brought in a "tough guy" coach and they seem to be desperate to deal a perennially 90+ point 2 way winger.
Maybe its my bruised and battered Leaf fan brain, but I just have a bad feeling we are going to get much worse AND be locked into some actual problem contracts.
The idea being that Treliving wants to fix the D group and Seth Jones has been mentioned in enough trade rumors at this point, that it's probably possible that Jones is willing to waive to go to Toronto, his dad did play here a bit with the Raptors, so maybe. Jones has been bad, there's reason to believe Tre would go after a big Dman like Jones. The Leafs PROBABLY should be getting someone more like Nazar or Moore or maybe Reichel, but I don't expect that the end up working. In this version, the Leafs can at least "get rid" of some more salary with one of their better 2 way players in Jarnkrok and the Hawks will say thank you. The Leafs will proceed to get the other 2 dmen they need to fix their D core, but they will both be too expensive. Add Pesce and Zadorov at a lot of money between them. Then they get Domi on a great, cheap, long term deal because he wants to be here and they need to keep the sandpaper. He slides into the Marner spot where he was in the playoffs. Then Dewar is an easy guy to bring back, he was great last year, they bring back Robertson for one more try, and then we're out of money! So the kids get called up to bring some juice and they sign a veteran goalie to play with Woll and another veteran goalie coming off a crappy season for some safety. Maybe Martin Jones signs again for 850k, but I feel like he's earned and will get a more guaranteed job.
This is my darkest timeline version of the Leafs offseason. Maybe I'm doing this to make myself feel better about what they could look like? Maybe I'm doing this because I hate myself? Not sure. But take a look, tell me what you think!

I personally think the Marner to Chicago rumors are a bunch of baseless clickbait.
1. Why would Marner waive his NMC to play for a team that will be in the basement next year and may not be competitive for 2+ years?
2. The teams that will offer the most value for Marner will be teams that are in win-now mode (or need to make a big leap now), so unless Marner is really set on Chicago, we won't be the highest bidder
3. By the time Chicago is (hopefully) contending, he will be 30+ years old. We'll need some established vets but I just don't see Marner being the guy we target, esp with his reputation as a no-show in the playoffs
Maybe we retain on Marner so Vegas can have him for a year at $5mm or something. That would be less surprising to me
Pretty much. Not that Marner is a bad player or anything, but he doesn't fit the Hawks timeline at all. He'll be over 30 before they're competitive and the massive contract he's going to want is going to hurt Chicago in the future when their young players need raises.

I think most hawks fans on here agree that marner just isn't the right fit and he wants too high of a cap hit. Much rather take Demidov in the draft and stick with Jones. Maybe go after one of the big name ufa wingers or trade for necas.

I would also add that CHI does not consider Jones a cap dump, negative asset, or someone they would sell low on. Trading for one year of Marner is not smart in the least bit, trading for Marner with an extension is not a good long term plan, either. Adding anything on top of Jones is definitely a bad idea. If CHI moves Jones it will be to add assets.
I personally really like Marner and would have no issue with the Hawks going after him… when he hits FA, I wouldn’t trade for him.
Additionally, labelling Jones’s as one of the worst contracts in the league is lazy and illustrates that you are just parroting what a bunch of know nothing internet experts spew out. Jones is undoubtedly overpaid by about $1.5m a season but he still plays 25 minutes a game and contributes significantly for one of the worst teams in the league… one of the worst teams in the league which greatly and negatively impacts his stat line.
If you really want to talk worst contracts I suggest you focus on Huburdeau, Dubois and Nurse.

I don’t think Chevy Chase will be in it lol. He was a great character but just wow after hearing what a scum bag he was on that show.
Yeah. Not making excuses for him, but he comes from a completely different time and he is old AF, you almost just have to expect it with boomers, cuz they ain't changing. There were definitely some great bits with him, but I could take him or leave him. As long as we get some Troy and Abed, i'm good, Annies Boobs would be nice too... The monkey. I ain't no perv! haha
