Detroit Trade

Description
Detroit is in cap jail. Even after putting Franzen on LTIR, they still have under a mill with Athanasiou still to sign. Buffalo takes advantage and acquires speedy winger Nyquist and a overpaid Sheahan from Detroit. Nyquist immediately makes our top-6 stronger and allows Reinhart to fall into his natural position at center to create 3 strong scoring lines. Buffalo sends Detroit Girgensons whose a very solid two-way center but needs to find a way to start scoring again in a new system, a young offensive winger in Baptiste who should be in the NHL this year or next, and a offensive RHD with some upside in Nelson. (A pick could be added instead of Nelson) Detroit saves around $4mill in cap after Girgensons ~1.5mill contract. Similar value to the Devils getting Johansson this offseason from Washington for a 2nd and 3rd

Not a Detroit fan, but I like this. Seems like a pretty fair trade and right in line with the market. It's a win-win for both sides; Detroit shouldn't be holding onto players that are in their prime now and should instead be shifting them out for prospects. Baptiste and Nelson are good examples of what they should be looking for.

Good move by both teams here. Then again Detroit fans will way over value "goose" (We know who the real goose is) and veto the hell out of this trade.

But why would Buffalo help the Red Wings out? Why would we give up two good young players and a great two-way for one good player and Riley Sheahan? Buffalo has no obligation to relieve Detroit's cap troubles.

I believe Nyquist is better than just a "good player" he's a speedster winger who can set up and finish which is what we need for Jack. Sheahan is a solid bottom-6 who just possibly got screwed with a bad shooting% last year. Zemgus is not super valuable until he gets his scoring back from a couple years ago and neither of those prospects will be top-6 or top-4 for a while if ever. Buffalo is getting better now while Detroit is helping out its cap and building for their bright future

Love the deal personally I'm a big fan of baptiste and zemgus plus salary relief. Baptist gives us something we desperately need a right handed shot up front. You can't even count glendenning because most of his goals are backhand

Im not sure Zegmus has a higher ceiling than Sheahan. I would alter the deal Detroit has too many D prospects at the moment so keep Nelson and throw in a 3rd round pick in 2019. Baptiste seems like a replacement for Frk in GR.

I think Zemgus and Sheahan might long term be similar players but Zemgus is cheaper and younger which gives him more value in the deal. I'd be completely fine with swapping Nelson for a third as well. Thanks for the feedback!

Essentially a 3 for 1. If Eichel could get Nyquist to return to his 27 goal performance this would be a HUGE upgrade. If Sheahan could contribute as he did in '13-'14 turn out the lights the party is over. IMO Detroit would want more, I am not sure is Nelson is a 7th D-man, but I may be in error.
