Note: Reports prior to Sept 2023 were originally graded out of ten, and also included additional categories that have been merged into the current categories.
This likely results in the overall ratings prior to 2023 being decreased in comparison to reports since Sept 2023.

For an `Apples to Apples` comparison between players, we recommend only comparing reports before, or after, Sept 2023.
Results will average out accordingly as more data is accumulated.

Ilya SamsonovLogo of the Toronto Maple LeafsG275 of 5

1B
Samsonov is, arguably, one of the most polarizing goalies heading into playoffs. He will have to be the best version of himself versus the Boston Bruins and, at least, equal the performance of his counter part in the Bruins net. Athletic goalie who is, by far, at his best when he allows the play to develop in front of him and doesn't over react to what's happening around him. When he's on he's plenty athletic enough to make desperation saves. Above average quickness in all categories. Focus and preparation can range. Last ten game segment before playoffs resulted in 6-2-0-2 record - paired with a 3.21 GAA and .896 save percentage.Apr. 17, 2024Apr. 20, 2024

Webber ends his college career playing to his identity and emptying the tank in the process. Relentless compete in Frozen Four Semi-Final game versus Denver. Over 23:00 TOI. His skating has improved as he matured in college. Huge frame. Long reach . Defensive 'D'. Pushes back physically. Proficient shot blocker. In a game versus Minnesota on March 30th he was credited with an incredible (9) shot blocks. Simple with the puck. No frills. No offensive upside. Chips pucks to space when he's under duress in his zone. Never takes risks going on offense and trying to do too much / create something out of nothing.Apr. 11, 2024Apr. 13, 2024

Quillan finished 18th overall in NCAA scoring in 23/24. - 39GP - 17G - 29A (+17) 55.9% F/O Averaged over 20:00 TOI / All situations / In playoffs and NCAA tournament for Quinnipiac He's the kind of player who can be deployed in a variety of roles. Quillan plays quick and fast. He tracks up and down the entire 200ft. He scored several of his goals from between the hash marks in the middle of the offensive zone - and around the crease via tips and rebounds. A relentless competitor who extends plays along the boards and battles for positioning in the trenches. Doesn't cut corners defensively. Rotates very well on the PK and jumps to loose pucks quickly. No discernable holes in his game at the college level. Projects as a solid third line NHL forward who plays with detail and could provide better than secondary offence.Mar. 29, 2024Apr. 2, 2024

Doesn't break stride entering offensive zone with puck on his stick A threat off the rush. Wins the majority of races to pucks that spill into open ice. Picks opponents apart on the perimeter. Hard to check. Has room to improve taking pucks to interior even more often. Has scored in all situations - including 2 SHG and 1 SHA Pure offense but much more engaged, overall, in all three zones than he has been in the past. Offense is the element that will always win out with his game. Only needs to be average defensively. Continue to monitor impact when games get very hard in April and May.Jan. 3, 2024Jan. 8, 2024

L2
Minten broke camp with the Leafs, at the beginning of the year, after a solid training camp. He returned to Kamloops (WHL) before being traded to the Blades. His scoring stats are from both stops in the WHL so far this season. The Leafs selected Minten in the second round (38th) in 2022. The 6'2 192lbs forward can play both center and the wing. He's responsible defensively, and capable of taking key face-offs in all three zones if required. Minten moves well, has the hockey sense to be used in all situations and the offensive upside to provide better than secondary scoring for Team Canada. Dec. 19, 2023Dec. 21, 2023

Toronto selected Cowan in the first round (28th) at the 2023 entry draft. The 5'11 185lbs forward can play both center and the wing. Cowan brings a combination of energy and skill. He's quick off the rush and relentless pursuing opponents trying to create turnovers. Another bonus is the fact he is willing to battle for pucks in traffic. If he gets the edge, off the rush, he takes the puck to the paint. Expect Cowan to play in Team Canada's middle six forward group. There's a chance he could be used in a variety of roles at the WJC, potentially seeing time in all situations. Dec. 19, 2023Dec. 21, 2023

He's being deployed in all situations. He continues to provide ample push back / use his size to his advantage. His face-off winning percentage is 53%. Matthews has been streaky so far this season. In the previous five game segment he scored 6G-2A. Monitor the hard match-ups his line will receive vs Pittsburgh, and how his line responds. He might get a healthy dose of Sydney Crosby vs the Pens. McCabe endured a tough start to the season before being injured and missing some time. McCabe is best described as a 2-way / Defensive / Match-up 'D' He's a solid skater who has some bite to his game. There's always going to be some risk/reward with his approach but Marner is undeniably one of the craftiest offensive talents in the entire NHL. Klingberg has been dealing with a nagging injury to start the season. It has limited his impact offensively. Lyubushkin is easily identified. He's a, mostly, stay at home defenceman who plays a heavy style. He, and Gudas, combined are making life miserable on opponents early in the 23/24 season for the Ducks. Lyubushkin is an average plus skater who needs to properly time his gaps and keep the play in front of him to be effective. If plays slip behind him he's not a great chaser trying to recover. The bulk of his ice time comes at ES and PK. Any offense he generates is a bonus. His job is to keep the puck out of his net and play a physical / shot blocking style. Through the first 14GP he's averaged 16:47 TOI - 13:47 ES - 2:58 PK Exactly to his identity ... he has been credited with 22 hits and 35 shot blocks.Nov. 12, 2023Nov. 14, 2023

The Leafs will need him to return to the form he had last season, or they will be staring at a platoon goaltending scenario for the entirety of the 23/24 season. His first seven starts have been wildly inconsistent. His GAA is 4.11 and his save % sits at .855 Both categories are not close to #1 goalie range, and they are trending towards (at best) back up status. When he's been on, he's played to his identity. A butterfly/athletic goalie who can be quick moving laterally and snag pucks with a solid glove hand. When he's been off , he's tracked the play either outside his posts or not all the way across. It's a mixed bag. His scenario is interesting. Is he the goalie who posted 2.33 GAA and .919 % - like last year Or is he closer to his current form. Historically he has bounced back and forth from reliable to unpredictable ... from year to yearNov. 10, 2023Nov. 11, 2023
Ryan ReavesLogo of the Toronto Maple LeafsRW362 of 2

L4
Through his first ten game segment, as a Toronto Maple Leaf, Reaves is playing to his physical identity. He's attempting to keep opponents honest / not take liberties on any of his team mates. Some issues have come to the surface however. His ability to track up and down the ice, at NHL pace, is being exposed at times. He's also not extending enough plays down low in the offensive zone when he has possession. More alarming is the fact, despite only averaging 7:49 TOI, he's a (-6). Monitor if he can have more impact overall. Including simple detail on and off the puck while playing to his physical identity. He can't be a liability defensively, or his role becomes less worthwhile. If he can find a way to produce average defensive results his intimidating element becomes more valuable.Oct. 28, 2023Nov. 4, 2023
Tyler BertuzziLogo of the Toronto Maple LeafsLW282 of 2

Bertuzzi is off to an uneven start with the Leafs. He was added to the group in hopes of providing better than secondary offense, and physical push back against opponents. He has been shuffled up and down the lineup in the last three games, and benched for long stretches. Monitor the opportunity he gets to reset his game. If provided runway he needs to establish himself in the hard areas of the ice. Battle along the boards to extend plays. Remain on the defensive side of the puck in his zone / don't blow the zone looking for offense until his group has control of the play / and set screens around the crease in the offensive zone. Needs to play to a reliable identity. Giordano is the oldest player in the NHL this year. Not only is he 40 years young, he's also playing a very taxing position. Giordano is uber competitive. He works his tail off in the defensive zone. He's more than willing to get in shooting lanes and block shots. Where things start to break down is around the 25-30 second mark of his shifts / especially in the defensive zone when stops / starts becoming exhausting in small area defending. He's being asked to play a top four role with the Leafs defense suffering through injuries. Monitor his ability to make responsible puck plays, pick his spots to join offensively, and contain in the defensive zone coming off the boards. Through ten games Giordano is averaging 17:34 TOI ... BUT ... his last three games have seen his ice time spike (20:29 - 20:44 - 21:34) He's being asked to play hard minutes at ES and PK / match up against middle six opponents at ES.Oct. 28, 2023Nov. 4, 2023

Understanding it takes time to adjust to a new team, a new role, and fit in with new line mates, the team needs his game to go to another level. Monitor three zone detail, on and off the puck, and his ability to extend plays in the hard areas of the ice with more tenacity. To start the season Klingberg was being used as a third pairing 'D' ,at even strength, and quarterbacking the first PP unit. Injuries have been piling up for the Leafs blue line. Klingberg is being asked to match-up against top six / middle six forwards. His impact, on the Leafs first PP unit, has provided mixed results.. He's seeing more time on the second unit now, as Morgan Rielly takes over his previous role as the QB on PP#1. The team needs more out of Klingberg in all three zones. He's competing. There's no issue with his work ethic. His execution, with the puck, offensively has room to go to another level. More importantly, his detail defensively is being tested. Monitor his ability to keep opponents to the outside in his zone, close gaps to kill plays, and battle physically / make life harder on his opponent. Leans more goal scorer than playmaker but his ability to extend plays along the wall benefits his line mates. Average TOI hovering close to 20:00 a night.Dec. 2, 2022Dec. 8, 2022

Leading UCONN in scoring and being used in all situations Has added more power to his stride resulting in more separation in open ice. Competes. Scores big goals. Leads by example. Middle bumper on the PP Scores goals from the middle of the ice / between the circles and around the crease Sound off the puck detail / defensive zone commitmentDec. 2, 2022Dec. 8, 2022

Some growing pains in his second year playing in SHL. Huge goalie who takes up a ton of net. Plays mid-range of his crease, which is fine with his stature. Staying between his posts better overall. No unnecessary movement. Rebound control is an area that requires attention. Too many pucks bounding off his pads and body resulting in second chances against. Outstanding blocker hand / quick. Glove hand also requires attention. Holds trapper facing down to the ice / not adjusting to catch pucks cleanDec. 3, 2022Dec. 8, 2022

Offense has fallen off in his second full year playing in Liiga but his detail in other areas of the game remains trustworthy Continues to be used in all situations, although his PP minutes have been scaled back during his fade offensively Bulk of his average 20:00 TOI comes at ES and PK. Competes defensively. Quick to space. High end IQ. Outlets efficiently. Still a solid prospect.Dec. 3, 2022Dec. 8, 2022

A giant in the crease. His stature alone protects much of the net. Hybrid / Butterfly style. He plays his best when things are organized in front of him. Initial saves are not an issue when he is squared up properly and towards the middle/top of his crease. Second stops moving laterally are a bit lethargic. He's not real powerful moving side to side but he also has less distance to travel due to his width. Good gloves. Average playing the puck. Decent feet / coordination for his size.Nov. 6, 2022Nov. 7, 2022

At the World Juniors (Edmonton) he struggled to produce the offense he is capable of Board battle was sound. He opened up space for line mates and extended plays. Continues to show willingness to get to the crease area and cause distraction Transporting the puck and finding open space to direct shots on goal was a challenge at the WJC Looking for him to reset come the fall at MinnesotaAug. 17, 2022Aug. 21, 2022

A trustworthy 'D' who brings sound detail in all three zones. Has the IQ and compete to be used in all situations ... including the PK Fantastic vision in the offensive zone. He will wait for a lane to open up and either get the puck to the net or distribute through seems. Defensively quick to take away time and space and willing to get in the lane to block shots Not a big body but it doesn't hold him back.Aug. 19, 2022Aug. 21, 2022

There are nights that he labors and struggles to get around the ice at NHL speed but overall he continues to produce offense. Sees the ice. Doesn't need a lot of time or space to make plays in the offensive zone. Great release. One of the best players 'tipping' pucks. He has elite hand/eye coordination. Defending ranges and it comes down to how fast the opponent plays the game and how well he positions himself defensively. If he is late with zone exits its a struggle to get back the full 200ft. Move to wing in future is likely Has the ability to take and win key face-offs in all three zonesFeb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Pure offense. Potential to be an elite player but he frustrates with his lack of detail defensively. A threat to produce offense almost every time he touches the puck Open ice speed makes him difficult to defend off the rush. A specialist on the power play. Not a ton of push back physically Unfortunate reality is he scores as much as he is scored against when he is on the iceFeb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Logs over 20:00 per night in a variety of roles. Compliments a partner who is more willing to take risks offensively. Capable to lead the rush or join as an extra layer but he picks his spots At best he is a 'bumper' defensively. Not a physical defender. Good stick. Mostly sound outlets. He can launch the attack effectively. He is what he is. A reliable NHL defender who skates and manages the game within his skill set and comfort level. He's not elite in any one category.Feb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Has settled into a role in Toronto. Used mostly regular shift and on the penalty kill. Averaged over 15:00 TOI in 21/22 Good size. Moves well. Plays within himself. Clearly tries to be responsible and takes few risks. Better than average secondary point producer. Enough skill to be used in a variety of roles. Does some heavy lifting defensivelyFeb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Good size Right shot Defensive 'D' . Used ES and PK. Easy to evaluate. He plays a physical, low risk, complimentary game. Gaps up in his lane. Simple with the puck. Solid bottom pairing option who can move into top 4 in a pinchFeb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Logged over 24:00 AVG TOI in 21/22 Sees the ice. Makes plays offensively His element is offense , transitioning pucks, and making plays on the PP. Easy to poke holes in his game, at times, defensively but he plays against top opponents every nightFeb. 21, 2022Jul. 12, 2022
