2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>I have no doubt Utah is a great state. Salt Lake City is beautiful, but these players were expecting to be in Arizona and are being relocated with little heads up. Also, I was referring to the ownership when I said "managerial distrust", I'm a big Bill Armstrong fan</div></div>
I think it would be hard to distrust a new ownership group that just paid a boatload of cash to move the team to Utah, I’d probably be excited to finally get all the AZ drama out

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>Let’s just say: it’s fantasy land and in this place Mark Stone is cleared to play in the nhl prior to the final day of the season, and that he has to be activated off ltir because he is no longer injured. In this fantasy, the NHL office 100% believes that a ploy is in place so that Vegas can avoid cap compliance through manipulation of recovery times. (I acknowledge this is most likely not the case today).
Any guesses at:
What actual remedy would Vegas have to become cap compliant: Would they be forced to trade a player? Or is there something they could do roster wise to make this work?
What possible ways could the league render punishment? Just ding them a draft pick and move on? Let them play out the playoffs in the fantasy environment where they’ve failed to be cap complaint by like 8 milly?
We’ve seen punishments for negotiating with other teams players, and we’ve seen punishments for writing contracts that are cap circumvention, but I don’t think we’ve seen “team making player be LTIR when they are not” punishment. And it isn’t like there is a whole off season to consider these things: If this fantasy scenario occured, there’s like a week to make a decision.
I can think of a dozen times a player returned to play prior to estimated recovery times. I’d almost suggest that a player who has gone through numerous long recovery periods has become experienced at it, should be better than average.
Google says this, I haven’t read the source:
“NHL teams that violate the salary cap can face fines of up to $5 million, contract cancellations, loss of draft picks, loss of points, and/or forfeiture of games.“</div></div>
In this <strong>hypothetical</strong> scenario, Vegas would likely be forced to trade, if they don’t, I would expect them to lose their playoff spot to STL, lose draft picks and get a fine

It's very interesting to look at the WC race in the east
NYI 89 points, 3 games left ( NYR, Devils, Pens so 3 hard games)
Pittsburgh 86 points, 3 games left ( Boston, Nashville, NYI, again 3 hard games)
Washington 85 points, 3 games left ( Tampa, Boston, Philly, 3 hard games)
Detroit 85 points, 3 games left ( Toronto, Montreal, Montreal so 1 hard game, 2 easy games)
Philly 85 points, 2 games left ( NJ, Washington, 2 hard games)
I think NYI and Detroit are the 2 teams, Detroit has 2 easy games vs Montreal and NYI already has an inside track
Btw all 5 of those teams play on the 13th so that's going to be some probably good hockey as they all try to win their games and hope the others lose

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rangsey</b></div><div><strong>Era adjusting anything is dumb and inaccurate.</strong> Matthews would never have scored 70 goals in the 80s because Arizona didn't have a team and he would have been a chain smoking baseballer.
Can we all just admit that this season we're seeing special players do special things non of us have ever seen before. How many folks on this site were old enough to appreciate what Selanne and Mog did.
Matthews <strong>might</strong> be the next Ovi. He <strong>might</strong> be the next Bossy. But he's the first AustonMatthews and even tho he's a Leafs fan that's impressive.</div></div>
I will agree partially, we don't really need era adjusted stats for anything however, everyone knows hockey has evolved and we as fans continually compare players performance to someone in the past and in that way, make era adjusted stats an important thing to know, you cannot compare Mogilny and Phil Esposito's 76 goal season as equal due to hockey evolving during that 23 year span

Why is it so hard for you to give credit where credit is due?
Edit: and yes I do realize he hasn’t hit 70 yet, but my point still stands</div></div>
There have been 14 70+ goal season (8 different players have hit 70+ goals), it is very much a rare occurence

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hurricanes_WPG</b></div><div>Honestly that's not far-fetched given era adjustments, a lot of the huge raw goal numbers were achieved in the late 80s and early 90s when overall scoring was way up.
A relatively simple calculation, taking the raw goal number * 82 * 2023-24 goals per game, divided by season goals per game and number of games per team (to account for the fact that season lengths have been changed over time), puts Matthews' current season at number 15 all time if he doesn't score another goal all season, and 10th if he keeps up his goal scoring pace.
Edit: See this calculation for all 47+ goal scorers <a href="https://pastebin.com/jNaJxnSb" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"> here</a></div></div>
That seems pretty fair, era adjusted stats are kind of their own niche thing where they don't really serve a purpose unless you want to dig deep and compare players from different hockey eras but they're very useful in seeing a glimpse of how stats would stand up through time

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>Seravalli is reporting that the league has a contingency plan in place for the Coyotes next season should they lose the bid for their arena.
There are 2 schedules being drafted, one that revolves around the Coyotes being in Phoenix, while a second revolves around the team being relocated to Salt Lake City.
I really want hockey to stay in the desert. I know it's the unpopular opinion, but I think Coyotes fans deserve their team. It's an unconventional hockey market with some of the most dedicated fans in the league, their jerseys are to die for, and they finally have an exciting young group of players. IMO, losing Arizona would be a nice loss to the hockey world. Im shocked at how many people are fully behind the NHL losing such a great city. While I really like the idea of Utah getting a hockey team, I'd hate for it to come at the expense of the Yotes. People will say that Arizona is Bettman's favourite team, but I feel like the Yotes deserve so much better. Theyve been royally screwed by their city and ownership (mainly ownership). If this is the end for the modern day Coyotes, I have 2 wishes:
- We see hockey return to Arizona in the future
- Utah keeps the Kachinas as a third jersey</div></div>
Teams to be successful need market size, fanbase and an arena, Arizona had 2 of those 3, and until they get the 3rd, I will be in the move Arizona camp

I mean Caufield is not a sniper anymore, he's a well rounded offensive player now, most Habs fans are very happy with Slaf and Caufield's production, Caufield's been scoring less than expected but he's shattered his record in assist and has made up for the lack of goals elsewhere. McMann, like Hyman and Bunting before him is a solid complimentary player, it's just a bad choice to compare players who are in totally different situation and pick their goal totals as a incomplete reflection of the players

Good news is: Bobby McMann has tied Pierre Luc-Dubois in goals, despite playing 20+ less games, when he scored on you last night... So you guys dodged a bullet
Bad News is: Bobby McMann is only 1 goal behind Juraj Slavkovsky in 20+ less games... And only 8 goals behind Caufield despite playing 20+ less games</div></div>
That’s a bit cherry-picking stats, Caufield and Slafkovsky have so many more assists and points than McMann and are on better point paces than McMann

You clearly didn't read what i wrote, if Hischier did it when the game wasn't done/way after the game was done, that's disrespectful but Hischier only slows down when the horn sounds around the top of the circle and just kinda lets the puck roll into the net, it's not an inherently disrespectful act, if he had put the puck way later/with more gusto in the net yeah sure but he doesn't. What Greig did is totally acceptable. You can score however you want when the time is running. Putting the puck in the net, at the end of any period or dead play shouldn't be allowed. Completely different situations</div></div>
Both Hischier and Greig's actions are fine and both of them are breaking ""the code"". If Hischier had done it when the game wasn't done okay, that'd be more disrespectful, but Hischier's skating down with the puck and momentum when the game ends and just lets the puck slow down by itself into the net, it's a perfectly fine thing to do, none of the 2 sens players right beside Hischier cared but Tkachuk who was halfway across the ice did for some reason
