2023 NHL Offseason Discussion Thread #4 - The quiet period
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>More deflection and projection. You're a one-man echo chamber, nothing gets in. You somehow know everything about the incident(s) without actually knowing anything more than anyone else here does. Oh the horror of those soft crybaby athletes and that evil media!!! How dare they!!!
But noooo, you're totally not defending him.
And I did not once call you any name. That's just pure fiction to sell a fake victim act to avoid every single, unavoidable factual point made. Meanwhile, each of your comments turns into personal commentary, if not starting as that out of the gate.
And capitalizing one word for emphasis is not "speaking in all caps". More deflection.
Babcock bullies employees. Plain and simple. He's done it at every stop. Facts. This is common knowledge. He tucked his tail and ran from this fit of mania because he did that **** again. Duh. You are entirely free to spin it like it's everybody else's fault and everyone else is being overly sensitive. We're all just as free to point out the delirious irony in all that.</div></div>
"Babcock is an old school coach. He was brought in to instill discipline and accountability as much as on the ice as off. Or, at least he thought he was. Who exactly did they think they were hiring when he was given the job in the first place? Unreal. A simple statement of support from the front office early on and this is a non-issue. Instead, they allowed the media to obsess over it at a time when there's nothing else to talk about."
Nothing about that statement is factually inaccurate. It's just an opinion. Facts and opinions are not the same thing.
And for the record, you called me, "Napoleon" and referred to my opinions as, "manufactured, disingenuous, and manipulative." End of story. Move on.

Most surprisingly, apparently several of these incidents happened at Babcock’s house. In at least one of the incidents reported to Whitney, a young player was invited for lunch, told to take out his phone, had Babcock flip through his photos and then told him to leave… without lunch. He sounds like a sociopath.
Some other stories about babcock were shared. One older player who hasn’t quite cracked the NHL yet said that he was sitting on the bench in an empty arena taping his stick before the final preseason game in Anaheim. Babcock came and sat next to him, said something along the lines of “this is pretty amazing isn’t it?.” When the player he agreed, Babcock continued; “soak it in, it’s the last time you’ll ever be on an NHL bench.” Serial killer behavior.</div></div>
Sounds like a pretty twisted motivational technique more than serial killer behavior, if it's even true.

Then they have the wrong chain of command. This would've never gone down like this in Tampa or Pittsburgh.

Let's be perfectly clear: you have no idea what you're on about, either about Babcock's behavior or about me or about setting up an honest premise. And looking to the dumb***es who hired him in the first place to accept the errors of their ways solely out of self-reflection is just pie in the sky (though apparently running cover for him and destroying their team in the process is okay... or something). That's all deflection nonsense. Just like all your little manufactured, disingenuous, manipulative attempts at points... oh, they just have nothing else to write about so they railroad a good man!!! He just did what he thought he was supposed to do!!!
PUH-LEASE.
Also, this is a public forum, so it's cute how you think you're some sort of dictator. NEWSFLASH: Ya ain't. Reel it in, Napoleon.</div></div>
The problem with people like you is that you either forgot how to debate or you never learned. As soon as you're challenged you get defensive and start lashing out, speaking in all caps, and name calling. Your opinions aren't facts and you need to start accepting other peoples' views, regardless of whether or not you agree with them. Hopefully, you'll do better in the future.
Nothing is gained from an echo chamber.

I'm not defending what he did or didn't do. I would like to know why this issue wasn't dealt with through the chain of command. There's a reason teams have captains. This issue speaks to disfunction within the organization as much as anything.

What's wrong with that statement? Other than the fact that it offends you personally that they hired a coach who didn't prioritize the fragile emotional states of his players. If you're gonna criticize someone's take on something, back it up with some substance. Otherwise, don't say anything.

(Drouin) is going to have to earn that ice time to stay there. … His hands and his ability to make plays is certainly not in question.”</div></div>
What do you expect the GM to say? "He was terrible in MTL and he's gonna stink here, too?"
I'm not even saying that 825k for Drouin was a mistake. But to think that all of the sudden, after years of terrible play, that he's gonna be transformed into a legit top 6 player is unrealistic. He's never even been a legit top 6 forward. I understand that you wanna support your team, but you need to lower your expectations. I was attacked by Habs fans on this forum years ago when I argued against Drouin as a top 6 forward. I was right, but they couldn't look past their own biases. But results, or lack thereof, speak for themselves.

Olofsson had more Goals than Drouin had Assists last season! I agree that they're both one-dimensional, but Drouin is bad at his dimension (playmaking) and Olafsson is good. That's a weak comparison. Drouin does nothing well.

3rd line RW spot is now set with him alongside Wood-Colton it has a Jersey vibe (Either former Devils or local product).
That means training camp is going to be a really tough battle for the 4th line spots (which is fine by me) and when Kovalenko comes over from Russia.
If Tatar is a ghost come playoffs AND Landeskog is healthy (both hypotheticals I know) then it's a perfect match. If Tatar can contribute in a 3rd line role in playoffs then this is all just gravy.
It's also a hedge against Drouin not working out in the top 6.
And the Avs use up their cap space from Landeskog's LTIR which they needed to maximize before the season started to be able to accrue any amount until the deadline.</div></div>

Perhaps this isn't the grand slam home run everyone seems to think it is. I'm sure he wanted to play for a contender, but it took 10+ weeks of UFA to sign a 1-year deal at 1/3 of his previous cap hit. He's only 32.

Well re-visit at the end of next season when Bouchard is putting up 65-75 pts while driving offense at an elite rate.</div></div>
I didn't see "offensive" in your original post, but I could easily substitute 10 other D's. And Miro is miles above Bouchard offensively. That's based on results. Yes, Bouchard had a great couple months, but he was invisible for the first 2/3 of the season where he put up only 18 points in his first 53 GP. And anything less than 65 points with the league's #1 offense would be a bust. BTW, Bouchard ranked 44th in points per game last season for players with 60+ GP.

top 5-8 right now? That's beyond bold.
Makar, Miro, Josi, Fox, Dahlin, McAvoy, Peitrangelo, Lindholm, Morrissey, and Toews are all head and shoulders above Bouchard right now, and I can probably go another 5. He certainly has the potential to crack the top 10, but he's not there yet. 2 months of elite-level fantasy numbers doesn't equate to top 10 overall Defense.

Smart move signing a bridge. Bouchard had an amazing second half last season and we've all seen teams overpay free agents based on small sample size. He looks legit, but no harm in making sure after 2 more seasons. Nurse career'd it in 2021 and they paid him $30M+ too much. No need to make that mistake again. No need to take big risks right now w/ the talent they have.

Why Do You Need to "Build Thru the Draft"
Vegas did win and they deserve all the credit in the world for building a championship team via trades and free agency. But, it's not sustainable. They're going to continue to get hammered by injuries, as most of their key players are 30+ and injury prone. They got the one but they won't get another.

Why Do You Need to "Build Thru the Draft"
It's pretty tough to fill out your roster with the necessary depth when you're paying your best players huge UFA-type salaries. When you lock them up as RFA's, or ideally, before they really break out, you drastically increase your chances of winning. That's why building through the Draft is so important. That's the formula that many teams have used. Teams like PIT, TBL, and BOS were all able to extend their homegrown elite talent at below market value. Had Sid not signed an extension in 2012 or gone UFA the following summer, he would've received $11M+ AAV on the open market. Pretty tough to imagine PIT winning those 2 Cups w/ Sid and Geno making a combined $22M+. Probably no HBK line if that were the case.Even if FLA had won this past season, it's highly unlikely they'd be real contenders for the next 5 years.
