Detroit Red Wings signed Joseph Veleno (1 Year / $825,000 AAV)
It's hard to call a 30th OA pick a bust, especially if they become a regular NHL player, but I remember his hype. He's been a major disappointment to say the least. Maybe he breaks out this season.

Why Do You Need to "Build Thru the Draft"
Vegas did win and they deserve all the credit in the world for building a championship team via trades and free agency. But, it's not sustainable. They're going to continue to get hammered by injuries, as most of their key players are 30+ and injury prone. They got the one but they won't get another.

Why Do You Need to "Build Thru the Draft"
It's pretty tough to fill out your roster with the necessary depth when you're paying your best players huge UFA-type salaries. When you lock them up as RFA's, or ideally, before they really break out, you drastically increase your chances of winning. That's why building through the Draft is so important. That's the formula that many teams have used. Teams like PIT, TBL, and BOS were all able to extend their homegrown elite talent at below market value. Had Sid not signed an extension in 2012 or gone UFA the following summer, he would've received $11M+ AAV on the open market. Pretty tough to imagine PIT winning those 2 Cups w/ Sid and Geno making a combined $22M+. Probably no HBK line if that were the case.Even if FLA had won this past season, it's highly unlikely they'd be real contenders for the next 5 years.

(ANA/BUF) - 2025 4th (MIN) for Lyubushkin
BUF wins. $2.75M is a lot of money for a depth Defenseman. Maybe ANA gets lucky and he ends up being worth the cap hit. But right now, he's worth half and it's a clear W for BUF.

These lists tend to resemble Fantasy rankings more than actual hockey rankings, imo. Hard to argue too much with the top 8, though. But, I would probably bump Marner and Krilll up a spot and drop Mikko to #6.

Arizona Coyotes signed Matt Dumba (1 Year / $3,900,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>Certainly that contract turned out to be a mistake, but I don't fault them for doing it. At the time he was young, putting up good offensive numbers, and contributing in other ways too. If you look at what teams are doing now with players like that, they're lucky they gave him only 5 years. Who knew he would start to decline shortly after signing it?</div></div>
It seems that the worst contract are almost always UFA Defensemen in the late 20's or early 30's. They tend to decline substantially and get injured more often as they age. For every Roman Josi and Mattias Ekholm, who improve or maintain their high level of play in their 30's, there's countless players like, Matt Dumba, Ryan Suter, Tyler Myers, P.K. Subban, T.J. Brodie, Seth Jones, etc...I could probably list 50. These types of contracts are high-risk and that's why we'll see more short-term signings, like Dumba's new deal, in the future.

MIN signed some brutal contracts over the last 10 years, and Dumba $6M x 5 years was definitely one of them. I don't think he'll be missed, even at 2/3 the AAV.

Washington Capitals signed Tom Wilson (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
Another case of a team paying someone for what they've done, not what they'll do. Caps are inundated with bad contracts of players from the 2018 Cup team. But, with Ovechkin still scoring at an elite level, they can't exactly start a rebuild. They just gotta hope some of their aging stars rebound from last season, I suppose.

Why not just wait until next summer when he's UFA? Do they really think he's gonna explode for 30G+ after coming off an injury-plagued season? We've seen these types of contracts backfire so many times. I just don't see the upside.

Had he repeated his 2021-22 season last year, the AAV would be significantly higher, so I think the Ducks did well here. However, they're still in the early stages of a long and arduous total rebuild. Terry will likely be in the final 2-3 years of this contract by the time the Ducks are a playoff team.

Yeah. I never said that. Check your quotes. That wasn't me. I don't speculate and draw conclusions w/o evidence. And like I've said 1,000 times, if the incident from junior wasn't enough to keep teams from signing him, then it certainly wasn't the reason he was let go. BTW, when someone resorts to name calling and profanity, they've failed to make their point.

No. I don't think it's personal at all. This was a hockey decision. Torts prepares his teams to play a certain style and at a certain pace. Where's Kevin Hayes? Gone. Torts just wants a particular style of play? Neither player fits his game plan, obviously.

The rangers decided they couldn't put up with him anymore. Here is there gm:
"You know what, Tony wasn't able to move on from that; it was something that he was trying to get through," Gorton said. "I had spoken to him at that time and said, 'Listen, if there are any more issues here, the time is going to come where we're going to put you on waivers and move on. No more issues. If your name is in anything at all that we have to hear, we're going to move on. We're going to make that move.'
https://www.nhl.com/news/tony-deangelo-of-new-york-rangers-clears-waivers/c-320927558
He was also scratched 8 times in the ahl in his rookie season despite being quite productive and then traded for pennies on the dollar to Arizona. It was rumoured to be for behavior but of course it is just rumours this time
I don't know if people tried to make him into a political scapegoat or something, but this isn't about him being conservative or who he votes for. It's about a repeated pattern of being a bad egg.</div></div>
I believe that quote you're citing is in reference to his poor performance on opening night, 2020 - specifically, a bad penalty. This was technically an on-ice issue. That quote is not in reference to the junior league incident(s).

To answer that question: No, of course not. But those suspensions had nothing to do with him getting bought out. And that's my point. If the mistakes he made as a junior player weren't enough of a reason to keep him from getting signed, they certainly weren't the reasons he was waived.

I didn't say the Rangers bought him out because of his political views, but they were also under pressure from the media after it came out that he made fun of Georgiev, or whatever.
The Rangers suck though. Let's not forget Trouba is their captain and both Kakko and Lafreniere are busts.
Plenty of his teammates have gone on record saying he is a good teammate. Carolina just signed him again... not at 5M a year though.
I see nothing wrong here and I think he gets too much hate from people on the internet who have no idea what they're talking about.</div></div>
I vividly remember that phony outrage when the K'Andre Miller hoax was perpetrated. But I don't think he was targeted for being conservative, per se. I'm sure the great majority of hockey players lean conservative, if they have any political ideology at all. I think he was targeted here and elsewhere for spending a little too much time on social media looking for trouble. But that's not what got him waived.

You're contradicting yourself: What does watching hockey have to do with off-ice issues? What off-ice issues are you referring to in Philly? If those "issues" were a problem before, then why did he keep getting signed? You can't say his issues were the reason he was let go when he keeps getting signed again and again. Particularly when he's signed by a former team. Forgive me for not just taking your word for it that he's a problem.

Similarly Tampa dumped him to zona despite him looking like a quality prospect for off ice concerns reportedly.</div></div>
I'm still not hearing any specifics. When. you (not you personally) attack someone's character, there should be specific evidence, no? The only thing I remember from NY was a fight with Georgiev and an internet hoax involving K'Andre Miller. Nothing I've seen or heard tells me the Phi buyout had anything to do with off-ice issues. It seemed to be a hockey decision. Seems to. me like he has a history of underperformance, not character issues.

This contract tells me that BT doesn't see Sammy as their long term solution. If he has a great season he will likely price himself out of TOR. But if he repeats what he did last season, they're gonna be in tough situation. I doubt Sammy will be a Leaf after next season.

You know, it's funny you say that b/c last summer when everyone (excluding most NJD fans) was pumping him up and saying he was a lock for a roster spot, I insisted that the Pens were fleeced and that Ty was highly overrated. I was right. He never found his way last season despite being given every opportunity in camp.
