With a buyout they get to pay 1.33 million again the following year, so that’s fun for them.

Fair enough. I figured Myers at 3.25 million and Beauvillier would each be positive value rentals for a playoff team at the deadline. Nobody here is moving the needle in any real way.

Yeah, now that I think about it, given what they gave up to get him, I think the new GM would get roasted for trading him.

Maybe they wouldn’t? I don’t know.
Would they want Pearson? I’m not sure, but with Strome, Copp, Vatrano and Motte set for FA, they might need a middle six forward. If you look at those guys Drury seems to be adding, Pearson seems in that mold.
As for value, mid to late first for early-ish second is not a big acquisition cost. Rangers are a playoff team.

Really seems like Klingberg wants the home run contract and Nill seems unlikely to give it to him. Shattenkirk is sneaky good but just at that age where D start falling out of the top 4.
Honestly, I just looked at Dallas and thought “they might want a RHD like Myers”. It sounded like there are suddenly suitors for Myers but I have no idea who that might be.

I am not against moving picks/prospects, but if we are moving those assets, we better get our coveted RHD first.</div></div>
The risk of it being top five is a big scary red flag (also what makes it enticing for the Canucks). This might be the year Jets can cash out on Wheeler’s productive season and maybe take a run at Klingberg in FA?
Who am I kidding, the Jets never make big free agency signings. Your plan is better.

Yeah to be fair, so would I. I get the feeling Dallas is the sort of team that would make this trade in real life, where Myers bizarrely holds some actual value.

Yeah, lots of risk to go around. I’d imagine both teams would want deals for Miller and Sanheim prior to trade, which probably means tens of millions more dollars on contracts that bring those players into their mid-30s.

The only reason to offer Miller to the Bruins would be because OEL might waive to go there. That's the point. Otherwise, Boston doesn't have the pieces to make a competitive offer without wrecking their own playoff chances (or purely picks, but this is capfriendly and that's a boring trade).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>T_Hip</b></div><div>Better off Keeping OEL and NOT taking those scrubs for 3M a piece.
Boston have ZERO decent prospects....ZERO. Like I said....they want Miller, it costs 3 1st rounders. Maybe Boston should stop being cheap and start using LTIR money. They cheaped out the last two years and did not claim a penny of it. Giving up 5M in cap and not taking any back is savings enough.</div></div>
Vancouver and Boston have different contention windows. Boston’s is right now, Vancouver is a few years away at best. OEL’s age and contract will hurt down the line, which is a bigger deal for a rebuilder than a contender. That’s the main “piece” coming back, and OEL was reportedly willing to waive to go to Boston before.
A first is a first. The more I think about it, maybe you get protections like Ottawa had with San Jose - make it a conditional 2023 pick that becomes a 2024 pick if Boston makes the playoffs next year.
DeBrusk and Reilly help make the numbers work. Reilly is a quietly effective D. DeBrusk could be something or you could not qualify him.

"A team that's up against the cap and not in the playoffs is not a great thing." - Jim Rutherford
This opens up a lot of cap flexibility for a team that is retooling at best, rebuilding at worst. There’s real value in that which I think you’re underrating here, particularly if the prospects on offer from other teams are underwhelming.

You saw the OEL trade in the summer. To me it’s pretty similar, with OEL a year older but coming off a bounce back year and Miller holding more value than Garland.

I want Boston to pay for the privilege of acquiring JT Miller.
The assumption in Vancouver has been that Boston (who reportedly asked about Miller) can’t compete with offers from teams with deeper prospect pools (Rangers, Wild, Flames). I think they can, and this would be how - eat a bad contract, go all in while the Bergeron Marchand core are still elite and buy out OEL on the back-end.

What in the world is Boesers trade value
Good to know he’s untouchable - I can avoid posting my “Rossi for four Vancouver firsts” and “Rossi for Hughes Horvat and Hoglander” proposals.
Honestly, the main reason I posted this is because I’m not yet convinced Guerin knows what he wants to do with his roster. Looking at key guys like Spurgeon I wonder how much he’s looking to build around mid-twenties to early thirties players.
Do the Minny fans here feel confident Bill’s got this?

I guess I see it as NYI’s scoring has cratered this year. Next year they’d have Miller at a very reasonable 2.6 million cap hit for 22-23 and if it works they can try to extend him and if it doesn’t they sell him by the 2023 trade deadline.

The problem is, MTL already has 5 or 6 Bo Horvat type players on their roster signed for above value and term. 40-55 points a year, even or a little below +/-, good leadership qualities, but no real wow factor (Gallagher, Anderson, Dvorak, Hoffman, etc) It all came together last year, but that was mostly because Price played out of his mind, and the young guys stepped up.

I don’t see this team being a contender in the next two seasons and so getting what you can for Horvat and Miller seems reasonable to me.
Honestly, I see a lot of the 2009-10 Tampa Bay Lightning in this group but getting over that hump requires more in the system. Team can’t expect a Kucherov, Palat 2011 home run draft, but they can influence those odds over the next few season by getting picks. They need to fill in the group coming up behind Pettersson Hughes and Hoglander IMO.
