Calgary Needs Middle Six Depth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>That Brodie trade is gross unless Winnipeg's second is almost a first (which despite their early struggles I don't think it will be). I get that some people hate Brodie for his glaring brain farts but overall he's still a solid #3D with the wheels to break up plays and join the rush and a good first pass when he doesn't have time to overthink. A contending team like the Flames should not be moving him for futures.
I keep thinking how much better this team would be if we got Zucker at last year's deadline so I like that you've circled back on that deal (though a 2020 first I'd say has more value than our 2019 one given the rumoured depth of this year's class).</div></div>
I don't necessarily disagree but I think that a team at most would pay a second for him as a rental. In the post above ideally you wait until Valimaki proves he's back to full speed before moving Brodie, one of him or Hamonic walks at the end of the year and if you can get a bit of draft capital back for him I think it's ideal.
I love the Zucker deal, cost certainty until 2022-23, speed on the right side that is seriously lacking and great middle six depth that can slide up if need be. Would love to see it get done.

Next year
Hammer probably wont cost 6M, maybe 5.5 max. If we are spending a 1st to get a middle 6 winger then why are we only getting a 3rd and 6th for a solid defensive center? Why are we spening 5.5M on a goalie to be a backup for 5 years?

Keep Neal and dont get Lucic
Neal would not be scoring in CGY he had no synergy with anyone on the Flames top 6 roster and is not a viable bottom 6 player since he is defensively challenged. Lucic is not know for being a goal scorer and we don't need him to be, we were 2nd in the league last year for goals and Neal only had 7. Meanwhile Looch has come out every game so far and made an impact physically. The hindsight was never with the trade it was always with the signing in the first place.

The crazy thing is.... he didn’t fit with the Flames. He’s too similar to Monahan and that line would have been a defensive liability with 2 weak skaters. The Backlund line is a shutdown line, not what neal is known for. Factor that in and you end up exactly where he played... bottom 6, also had issues with Peters. It was a shortsighted signing by Treliving

St. Louis Blues signed Brayden Schenn (8 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>Term is the price they paid to keep the cap hit down. My guess is a 6 year term would have costed $1M AAV more. Without a NTC/NMC, if his play does fall off a cliff they can move him to a cap floor team towards the end of the deal as he makes $4M the last couple years. A buyout of the last two years is also only about $2M AAV on the cap. There will likely be a cap spike after the new TV deal and Seattle, so even the back side of the contract won't cripple them if he can maintain at least middle six caliber play for the last half of the contract. Overall, I'd say it's a fair deal.</div></div>
The buyout would cost just over $3.5M in year one, $3.8M in year two then just under $1.4M a year for two years. His salary dips, but it will cost assets to move if his play falls off completely. More and more teams are pressing toward the ceiling each year, with fewer teams having big amounts of cap space, assuming it will be easy to offload him later shouldn't be something that makes the deal seem reasonable.
Also, I am not sure why so many people feel this AAV is such a steal. What would be his fair market value on a reasonable term? $7M x 4 years? I am not saying there wouldn't be a GM that lost his mind and did more than that, but it doesn't make the player worth it. If this is the cost for this player, the Blues should have let him walk.

Calgary Flames signed Matthew Tkachuk (3 Years / $7,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Trickster</b></div><div>Depends on what is cap.
Right know, their saying no cap increase for next season so I am thinking it will be less than 85 million by then.
Who does Calgary sacrifice to the cap crunch?</div></div>
Giordano will not be making 6.75, if he doesn't retire it will be a year to year deal. Who knows what Gaudreau is up to, all of Calgary's current buyouts are gone (3.1 million) Frolik, Brodie. Ryan at the least are gone (12 million), New major contracts include Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, Bennett, Dube, Mangiapane, none of which have the pedigree of the RFA's that just went through this off season poop storm. There will be another squeeze at some point, I don't think it will be like this though.

In my books 1-3 is bridge, 4-6 is short Term and 6-8 is long Term ( 6 being a matter of subjective perception ). Matthews deal sucks as OP perfectly described it below
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>claytron8000</b></div><div> What’s incredible is the Leafs gave up control, didn’t get long term, and didn’t get any savings on AAV despite the first two concessions. Worst of all worlds.</div></div>

uuhh that is a bit bold statement. Tkachuk soon better than Gaudreau?!? I do not see it right now just because of Tkachuk's skating and lesser ability to drive play (he is doing it but not as good as Gaudreau). In my opinion, Tkachuk should definitely shoot more but since he loves the goalies' so much he is usually in front of the net. But let us see what happens now he will be paid real money

An outside look of CGY line-up - am I far off
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>Tkachuk would get more than that, even on a one year deal so this team probably isn't cap compliant.
As for comments on your actual team, I think what you've done with the D pairs is interesting and something I'd like to see them try during preseason. I think it will probably end up being what worked well for most of the year last season though:
Gio - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Czarnik is a winger and played RW and LW at various points last season. I don't think he'd cut it as a center. My expectation is that Frolik will be a cap casualty that's moved to make room for Tkachuk's deal and they hope that Bennett continues his strong play from the playoffs on the shutdown line. I think they pair Mangiapane with Jankowski to start the season (they were good together in the AHL) and put Ryan & Lucic together given Peters' comments about Lucic's best seasons being with a RH centre and they'll hope one of Dube or Lucic can play on the off-wing.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Bennett
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Czarnik
Lucic/Dube - Ryan - Lucic/Dube</div></div>
I think Dube will spend a decent portuon od the year in Stockton tbh and we wil lsign DSP to play with Mangiapane and Janikowski. Czarnik had great chemistry with Ryan lasy year and will probably stay there

I don't see the Flames moving Hamonic, personally I think he re signs and plays with Hanifin for some time to come, they are a great second pairing and make a lot of sense playing together. Also with the package that Calgary put together to get him, I don't think they would move him without at least a first coming back, which would seem like an overpay for a lot of teams.

I put Kravtsov in the AHL to start as I expect they'd rather have him playing big minutes down there than on the fourth line in New York. I don't think he's really competing with McKegg, as McKegg is a better option for the fourth line and Kravstov is top 9 NHL or top line AHL for me. I could however see Kravtsov pushing Howden down that initial training camp lineup.

Faulk for Brodie and a Williams Re-Signing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>An interesting idea from the Calgary perspective assuming both guys don't have these respective teams on their NTC's. We need the cap savings this year, but there is risk in the fit. Gio + Brodie has had Gio in the Norris conversation (and a win this year) each of the two full seasons they played together. With Gio + Faulk, who knows how the fit will be. There is also risk for both teams in trying to retain these guys. I feel like that risk is greater for Calgary as US players typically prefer to play in the states once they get to UFA, and Faulk would be going from a market where he isn't under the microscope to one were he would be.</div></div>
There is a lot of former Canes infrastructure in your organization, though, and vice-versa. Lindholm, Hanifin, Derek Ryan, and Bill Peters are all with you guys. If there's any Canadian team that Faulk would be comfortable enough with in re-signing, it's likely the Flames. The Canes' risk IMO is mitigated by the 3rd round pick, so even if they treat Brodie as an own-rental, they will still get a total of 11 picks in a reportedly loaded draft.
