Tavares Trade

Compensation wouldn't matter. Calgary 100% matches that offer for Bennett. To get him locked up for 4 years at 3M would be a major coup as he's likely to blossom into at best, a star two-way C and at worst, a 2nd line C in that time frame. The Ovi/Tavares trade is interesting and probably fair, but I think it's too big and with too many pieces to ever happen.

Deal with Detroit doesn't make much sense. Flames just traded a 2nd rounder for Lazar, so they would at least need a 2nd rounder back.

Calgary Opening Night
I'm thinking Ferland gets an extended look on that top line, as he's certainly earned it. D pairings are bang-on. I'd prefer to see Ferland with Monahan and Gaudreau. Keeping the 3M line together is a no-brainer. Id like Bennett with Versteeg and either Foo or Jankowski on the 3rd, with Brouwer on the 4th line where he won't hurt Bennett's production. Stajan would center the 4th line, with Lazar acting as the swing guy,
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Bennett - Foo
Jankowski - Stajan - Brouwer
Lazar

What I would do
At this point, I would say Hamilton is more valuable than Duchene. Duchene grades out as a good #2 Center whereas Hamilton grades out as a #1 Defenseman. Hamilton is also on a great contract, is 2 years younger than Duchene, and had more points last season (50) as a defenseman than Duchene (41) as a center. Hamilton is just starting to emerge as a potential elite defenseman in the league, and made up the best pairing in the NHL statistically last season with Mark Giordano. I can't see Calgary trading him, especially with their depth at Center already with Monahan, Backlund, Bennett and Stajan.

As per above, I'm inclined to agree.
Maybe this would get it done (have to think OTT would be interested in a Tier 1/2 defense prospect, especially a Swede):
Bennett + Kylington + 4th (2019)
for
Stone
Again, expensive for CGY, especially since Treliving is going to try to rationalize not having any picks in the next couple years by realizing NHL roster spots on the current prospect pool.</div></div>
The Sens franchise and fans think the world of Stone. There's no way they trade him for what you're saying. Ottawa would want much more, at minimum switching the mentioned 4th for a 1st, even that might not be enough.

Meant to have him at 3C with Bennett and Versteeg. Reverted the trade a couple times looking at different options. Not sure why that constitutes a 1 star rating... Kind of bush league

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>adamkaz23</b></div><div>It's a fair deal but not what Colorado is after. Avs want a bona fide top 4 defenseman, not a bunch of 'what if' prospects. You see how that O'Reilly trade has worked out so far, it definitely set the Avs back and contributed to the Avs current position. Sakic is smart to demand legitimate NHL players coming back in any Duchene trade. He won't be traded for just a bunch of picks/prospects.</div></div>
I absolutely agree, which is why at this point, I don't think he'll be traded. At least not until next offseason.

Avalanche Trade w/Flames
Nope. Hamilton is arguably already better than Duchene and would be more valuable to CGY as their number 1/2 Dman, whereas Duchene would be a 3rd line center. A really good 3rd line center, but a 3rd line center none the less. Any trade from CGY would be for Quantity as opposed to Quality.

Bennett and Shinkarik for Duchene
The most I would want to give up would be:
Kylington
1st Round Pick
A goalie prospect not named Gillies or Parsons (McDonald, Scneider or Rittich)
and a forward prospect not named Bennett (Shinkaruk. Klimchuk, Poirier or Poirier).
Sakic is going to realize that he waited too long and should have made the Hamonic trade. There aren't many teams that are going to give him a roster player this late in the offseason. This deal gives Colorado a decent prospect at Forward, on Defense and in Goal, as well as a 1st round pick. That is probably the most Colorado is going to get and if they can't settle for that then they'll lose him for nothing in two years.

Trade with TOR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dardicus729</b></div><div>Shouldn't the primary concern be finding a good winger to play with Johnny and Monny? I know Ferland was clicking with them at the end, but is he really the long term solution?</div></div>
Monahan and Gaudreau are going to score regardless, and Ferland was the best winger they had last season. I'd rather try to get Bennett going. If Bennett can get a kick from playing with two really good offensive players in JVR and Versteeg and elevate his game to the level of a solid #2 Centre, CGY would have three very capable scoring lines.

Trade with TOR
If you consider that he only has one year left and there's virtually no way that Toronto can resign him next season with new contracts on the way for Matthews, Marner and Nylander, I think the value is pretty close. I agree McDonald would be the low end of what Calgary can offer but one swapping him with a Rasmus Andersson or Oliver Kylington might just get the deal done.

Suggestions Megathread
Here's a suggestion for the armchair GM create-A-team mode (which I know we all love). It would be cool if it were possible to advance to the next year in the same created team, to look at how theoretical trades can effect future signings, instead of having to create a separate team for the next year. Thanks for all you guys do!

As a Flames fan, I would buy a Habs jersey if Montreal could offer Drasaitl 9.5 and have Edmonton match. At 22.75M, McDavid and Drasaitl would be making more than most team's top-4 defensemen combined.

Hello Ovi Hello Stanley Cup
This would leave you with 12 players signed for next season with under 10M in cap space (after McDavid's 13.25M). Also, I'm thinking Drasaitl is going to get somewhere between 7.5M and 9M, based on the reported asking price and comparables. McDavid's and Drasaitl's contracts basically guarantee that Ovi would never happen. No NHL team has ever won anything committing 30M to three players. As it is, Edmonton will be paying McDavid and Drasaitl (20 to 22M) as much as CGY's top 4 Defensemen (21M) combined. McDavid alone (13.25M) will be making more than Monahan and Gaudreau combined (13.125M). As a Flames fan, I have to say I love seeing the Oilers spend themselves into financial oblivion.

McDavid Effect....
I think that the McDavid situation will be an outlier, and not the norm. If Edmonton wants to continue to make the bad decision to just shell out massive money, that's their problem. I can't see Tkachuk making more than Giordano and Gaudreau, unless he comes out and becomes the top scorer and leader on the team. Even then he won't be getting over 8M. Treliving did a really savy thing when he signed Gaudreau and Giordano to those deals. He knew that they would be their offensive and team leaders respectively, setting a hypothetical internal cap on contracts, ensuring that the only guys that will get paid more than them, are guys that take over those roles.

Overpay for Williams?
I'm thinking that 3.5M over two years is pretty close. It might be a bit high but since he made 3.25M last season, I think it's in the right ballpark. I think Versteeg is going to sign at closer to 3M.

Flames or Ashes?
I don't think that trading Brouwer is in the cards. Calgary would be much better off eating some salary in a trade. If they could deal him in a mid-round pick to a team like ARI, they could eat 1.5M in the deal. This would be the same cost as a buyout but they would only be paying for 3 years instead of 6. Stajan I think would be the more likely candidate for a buyout since he only has 1 year left, and would conly cost around 600,000 for next season.

But, make this line a thing:

I really hope Calgary makes a play for Williams, I think he could help elevate Bennett and get him going. I think I'd rather keep the 3M line together with Versteeg acting as the playmaker with Bennett and Williams. Bennett would already be the "sandpaper" on the line so I think it would be better off as shown.
