Buffalo Sabres signed Mattias Samuelsson (7 Years / $4,285,714 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>Samuelsson being a $7M player in 2026-27 is probably the top 25% of outcomes if we're being generous - not saying that he's a bum, but that I could easily sit here and find 3 guys who flamed out after a good half-season for every defensive Dman you could bring up that wound up being a $7M player by the end of his RFA years.
The overpay now is strategic, obviously GMKA and team see the value here and willing to commit he’ll be part of the core moving forward. Sure they are projections and speculations but that’s part of being a GM, and their judgement is good enough for me.
Buffalo has a boatload of Cap Space and to not weaponize take advantage of it in some way would be neglectful</div></div>

100% agree and this is a good contract that will seem cheap in years to come. GMKA is managing Cap for the future.

Everyone was negative on the Thompson deal in Buffalo but I think it was a calculated risk and probably going to be a good one.
I feel the same about this one. Risk/Reward. I think you have to take same risk to mange the Cap with the few what could seem like a bargain deals in the future is the player pans out. The GM and Coaches have had a good look and know what they have in the person and player better than anyone.
Good deal

Buffalo Sabres signed Tage Thompson (7 Years / $7,142,857 AAV)
GMKA must have a lot of faith in Tage. This kind of money after one good year makes me nervous, on the other hand if he continues or dare I say even improve his game, Adam’s will look like a genius (Especially when Cap increases) No risk no reward I guess. If he progresses or even stays around last years level he’d be a 9Mil player after a bridge so this could be a savings. I think he’s trying to find a way to keep the band together when their contracts are up (Dahlin, Power, Samuelson, Cousins, Kerbs, Middlestat)
I’ve always liked Thompson even when other Sabres buddies thought he was a bum but I could see his potential and lack of opportunities given to him. He did have his breakout year with more ice, I feel there is even room for him to improve (defence) I’d rather risk it on a kid then a declining UFA like Kadri. No offence meant to Kadri but my point is his best years are probably behind him not ahead of him like Thompson.
I think it’s a calculated risk signing, we’ll need 3 years to probably properly evaluate it.

(VGK/SJS) - 4th for Hill
Ok 4th for what Knights feel will fill the gap in goal seems reasonable.
The bigger question is how the heck will VGK ever become Cap Compliant at 10 million over the Cap? Seriously, with all the big money in NMC/NTC players I don’t see how they’ll manage it.
I’d they’re in a jam I guess we’d take Eichel back to help them out if we also got a 2023 1st round pick (LOL)

1st Rounder for a Salary dump. Only wish the Sabres jumped on this first. Hopefully GMKA is paying attention; the bar is set and lots and lot of teams in a bad way to meet the Cap

Wondering what the fit will be in the organization NHL or AHL. Either way solid signing of a local guy who “wants” to be a Sabre. Not everyone is McDavid, it takes a team and hard work, attitude and character.
Another good depth move by GMKA.

Arizona Coyotes signed Lawson Crouse (5 Years / $4,300,000 AAV)
AZ rolling the dice on his potential which is bound to improve as the team does. I’m sure AZ has a very good idea of his projections. Using available Cap space now for what my be a bargain in his prime years. It’s a bit of an overpay now, (and a calculated risk) but that’s the idea.

Like Calgary and Huberdeau, however, A lot to pay for someone who hasn’t played a shift in Calgary yet. Hope it works out but man CAL is handcuffed now with this Cap hit especially since I’m sorry, but generally after 30 performance drops from career highs.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
The knee jerk reaction is Florida got fleeced. The more I think about it this is really isn’t bad. Both Huberdeau and Weegar are both UFA go to the highest bidder after this year so they are rentals. Without team control the value of these players is vastly diminished. So other than this year, they gave up a prospect and a 1st (late round probably). If Calgary can get something at the trade deadline for them it tips in their favour.
Problem is FLA is 3 Mil over the cap with RFAs to sign and will probably have to move out another contract.in a Cap Dump which may cost more still.
Also concerned with FLAs defensive depth now.

Overpay on the trade
Florida is an amazing & diverse State (racially & financially) full of wonderful people (and jerks like everywhere else)
It does have tax advantages that the league should address to make a level playing field for other teams. Weegar and Huberdeau just got forced pay cuts and Florida has an advantage in signing UFAs

I don’t care how cheap it is, this makes no sense if at the NHL level. It’s not fair to the fans or the team until he proves it. At the AHL level, I can see it, he’s still 28 & dealing with injuries and goalies develop later. If he pans out great, if not, the spot is filled until prospects Levi and Portillo hopefully arrive.
Heard reports he’s a good teammate and fits the Buffalo culture now.

(TOR/OTT) - future considerations for Murray + 2023 3rd rd pick + 2024 7th round pick
This is not the answer I was expecting from Dubas. Toronto above many teams needs Elite Exceptional goaltending with its marginally adequate defence. Couple premium goaltending with its loaded offence then it contends for Cups. Kind of a big gamble on a win now team to go with a goalie you hope makes a comeback to previous form.. Kuemper or Campbell even though a bit of a stretch is what I’d like to see for the Leafs right now.

(BUF/VGK) - Eichel, 2023 3rd for Krebs, Tuch, 2022 1st, 2023 2nd
I think its a fair deal. Adams got what was available on the market. Obviously, yes I was hoping for a little more but it's in the ballpark. In the moment yes, LVK won this trade. We won't know the full answer until we see were Tuch develops with more ice time. I love how he's the NY boy, grew up a Sabres fan a truly seems happy to be a Sabre. Krebs potential is unknown but looks good, and of course the picks well honestly that's a crap shoot. In my mind I see 3 top six forwards eventually for one exceptional player. And if that's the case I'm Ok with that. Jack didn't want to play here, the team plays better without him and from what you can gather from sources of unknown reliability, which I've heard for years, he's a cancer in the room. He's not a leader. Buffalo doesn't need a savior they want to build a culture of hard work, family, pride and teamwork something Eichel couldn't deliver. Personally, I wish him the best but I'm glad he's moved on and excited for what the organization got in return even though it's not immediately measurable.

I'm sad to see Buffalo let him go, especially now what I see he signed for. We gave up a decent amount to get him in a trade to get nothing? Didn't see much of him but he looked good in the small sample size I seen. I think he would be a good on the 2nd or 3rd line in Buffalo. Congrats to the Oilers though, I think you've gotten better with this addition.

(BUF/PIT) - Rodrigues, Sheary for Kahun
I like the Sabres on this one. E-Rod is borderline AHL player, often a healthy scratch. Sheary just never fit in Buffalo. He'd be good again with Crosby but then again who wouldn't.
Kahun, while I don't know him is young, seems about as productive as Sheary with more upside and is an RFA.
Both Sheary and E-Rod are UFAs and I doubt would be back to Buffalo anyway. I see advantages for both teams but edge to Sabres long term. Good job BOTS.

To me this is a signal the Sabes are not convinced on Ullmark. I actually don't disagree, I don't think he'll be a #1 in the NHL. He's, really, really good but not elite / great based on body of work thus far.

Buffalo Sabres signed Jake McCabe (2 Years / $2,850,000 AAV)
Good signing but in 2 years he is UFA at 26 years old. McCabe is a solid 3rd pair D and borderline 2nd. We'll have to pay a premium to keep him (like Skinner). He'll have to follow the money at 26 yrs.
I just would have liked to see this contact closer to the 4 year range. Even if the plan is to replace from Rochester after 2 years, a 4 year contact would provide better trade value and or be a value contract in 4 years and help the Cap.
