CUP CHAMPIONS
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brad21</b></div><div>Haha haha surely you must be joking.How?</div></div>
How are Calgary and Toronto measurably better in theory or in practice?
Toronto went 36-25-9 in 70 games last year. Calgary went 36-27-7 in 70. Edmonton went 37-25-9 in 71 games last year. Better than both teams (but they played an extra game). Edmonton did better in the standings than either team.
Goaltending? Markstrom's save percentage last season? .918 Andersen's save percentage? 9.09. Koskinen's save percentage? 9.17. So Calgary will pay an aging goalie an extra 1.5m for another 6 years for literally an extra thousandth of a save percentage. Freddie Andersen's save percentage is no better than a backup goalie's. Does it even have a backup goalie? WTF are you talking about?
Probably the reason Freddi Andersen's save percentage was so horrible is because Toronto's defense is so bad. Seriously, who Does Toronto have on Defense? Aside from TJ Brodie and Morgan Rielly, who are legit, it has 2 NHL has-beens, Muzzin and Bogosian, then the rest are AHLers. Seriously, JUSTIN HOLL, RASMUS SANDIN, CALLE ROSEN, and MARTIN MARINCIN? Calgary's defense is legit, but it was gutted with the loss of TJ Brodie and Hamonic, etc. A lot of great prospects whom I love like Juuso Valimaki, etc. But Edmonton's is still by far the best in terms of GA and puck-moving, followed by Calgary. Toronto can't defend and that's why it routinely gets creamed by good teams like Boston.
Forwards? Out of kindness, I will leave Calgary alone and pick on Toronto. Forget Connor McDavid vs. Auston Matthews . . . Draisaitl is better than Auston Matthews in each and every available metric. Toronto pays just 4 forwards just over $40m. Hard to pay the other 19 guys you need to fill out a roster.
What did Toronto do to improve? Well, they LOST two young promising wingers in Kapanen and Johnsson and replaced them with 32 year old RW Wayne Simmonds. Simmonds scored 25 points last season and was MINUS 21. On LW, Toronto replaced Johnsson with Jimmy Vesey (20 pts) of the Buffalo Sabres. Yikes.
Edmonton signed Barrie, Turris, and Puljujarvi to sweetheart deals. Oh, and Dominik Kahun, Draisaitl's longtime linemate who has roughly the same points per 60 as Taylor Hall and is only getting paid 925k. Edmonton's PP was the best in the league in 30 years. It had the best combined PP/PK in the league this year.

I would not pay 2500000 for Andreas Athanasiou at this point. He showed up fat for the play-in series and his game has really fallen off since his 30-goal season a couple seasons ago with Detroit.

Amen. Hate to sign UFAs when they take away the chance for homegrown talent like Lagesson. Madison Bowey is not demonstrably better than Lagesson. Anthony Duclair is really streaky. Only one I would consider is Koekkoek.

Thanks for the comments all. Really, really excited for the Oilers next season. Ken Holland's signings were all soooo cheap, risk-free, and with such upside that I have to give him an A+.
100% agree that the Dynamite line of Draisaitl, RNH, and Yam fries should stick together. Really it is the Oilers' No. 1 line. Never hurts to be creative though and to try different things every now and then.
Also, how come nobody has pointed out that the thing that the Dynamite line has in common is that all 3 players came from the WHL, a seriously under appreciated league. I wish it was called the "Dub Line" or something.

My scenario makes the numbers work. I don't think Bear makes too much more than $2m on a 2 year bridge deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bringer_Of_Snow</b></div><div>Im hoping Holland has a few moves up his sleeves for the forwards still. There are so many guys signed. I like Haas way more than Khaira and even though Chaisson still produces and it appears Tippett really likes him, Im not sure there is any room for them to be in the lineup if the Oilers can land either Kahun or Duclair. Thats too much money to waist. If they can move out about the $3,5M between Chiasson and Khaira, that would open up the opportunity to get one of those guys.
I like Kahun too. Seems like a good middle 6 guy who has the skill to play top 6 if given the opportunity. As for the contract you proposed, that seems like a big time overpayment in term and AAV given the times. If the Oilers had no problems giving that contract out to Kahun, you'd think Anthanasiou would still be here.</div></div>
I don't think that they should move out Chiasson. He is a power play GENIUS and one of the keys to the Oilers' unreal success on the PP last season. He has a great shot and is also a great net front guy. His 5 v 5 scoring might also be a product of not having a great centre. He's overpaid by 500k at most, IMO.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>Not as easy as it seems. For this to work klef has to be placed on ltir after season starts to maximize ltir relief.</div></div>
Right you are. As I understand it, each team has to be 100% cap-compliant when the season starts. Kahun would have to be signed on Day 1 of the season after Klefbom goes on LTIR.

Chiasson is overpaid $500k at most . . . but he's the net front guy on the league's best power play (best combined special teams in 40 years). Huge part of the team winning this year. I say keep him.

Agreed. I just meant that I didn't know much about Berglund, not that I doubted his abilities. I've heard that he's the most developed on the ones you listed and he plays good minutes in Sweden.
Agree though about language barrier. People squawk at me all the time when I say that Edmonton should trade for Patrik Laine . . . Imagine a line with Laine/McDavid/Puljujarvi. Laine and Pool were magic at the World Juniors when they were on a line together.

Nurse/Bouchard
Broberg/Berglund
Samorukov/Shutdown defenceman possibly from UFA</div></div>
Ken Holland's statements on drafting defensemen were really interesting. He said that you select them for their offense. But they make the team on the merits of their defensive reads. Bouchard, Broberg, and Samorukov are all good offensive players, but I have no idea how they are progressing defensively. Not sure about Berglund if I am being honest. Basically, they are all unproven and need to prove their defensive abilities at the NHL level. The current formula seems to be working so I don't think they need to radically overhaul things.

I think (hope) Poile goes after one final signing this free agency - a top 6 forward. Both of these players fill that need, but I'd prefer to keep the term to 4 years or less. If it happens to go to 5, then I'd want the AAV under $6m like you have here.
It definitely makes NSH contenders next season if they can add both Dadonov + Hoffman. I think a Hoffman deal will look closer to $6.25m x 4 years and Dadonov slightly below, maybe $5.75 x 3 years. I don't know if Poile will be savvy enough to do it this off-season, but stranger things have happened.</div></div>
Nah. Nobody has any cap space to sign either for those terms except maybe Ottawa.

Sorry to burst your bubble dude. Nashville is worth much less money as a franchise than Edmonton. It is in way worse financial shape than the Oilers. It has way fewer fans.
Also, Nashville would not be trading for a player, which is the premise of your comment. It would be dumping salary cap for 4 years. In return, you get a 1 year contract for 1.5m.

Okay, so Toronto has a problem: It has elite offence. But questionable defence. So there are 2 solutions.
1. you could sign hardworking, reasonably priced defencemen and build 3 solid defence pairings
OR
2. you could sign 1 SUPER DEFENCE MAN who never gets scored on, scores more than Ovechkin, and is on the ice for 60 minutes a game. I think we all know who we are talking about . . .
ALEX. Pietrangelo.
Why does Toronto believes that hyper-costly "super-players" (e.g. Auston Matthews, Tavares, Mitch Marner, Nylander) will get it past the first round of the playoffs?? Has not happened yet (and not likely to ever happen).

Torn on that one. In many ways, Smith totally sucks. For long periods, his play drops off a cliff. That said, there is something awesome about him. The whole team plays a lot faster when he is the goalie. He moves the puck but also gives an emotional boost to the team. Apparently, he is a great leader and mentor to boot .
If the Oilers could get him for 2 years for cheap and spend the rest on a great 3C or top line winger, I would be okay with re-signing Smith.

Bear and Poolparty for Kapanen and Liljgren
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Time will tell, of course. Here are all 4 players boxcars from their 22-year-old season:
Letang: 73, 3- 24-27 +1 (3rd full NHL season)
Ellis: 80, 6-21-27 +9 (1st full season)
Spurgeon: 70, 3-20-23 -4 (1st full season, although he played 53 games the prior year)
Bear: 71, 5-16-21 -4
Some of these guys got more PP opportunity than others, so here's their 5v5 scoring numbers:
Letang: 2-18-20 (1st pairing)
Bear: 71, 4-15-19 (1st pairing)
Ellis: 6-13-19 (3rd pairing)
Spurgeon: 70, 1-9-10 (2nd / 1st pairing)
Sure Bear needs to prove he can sustain this level of play, but it's not obvious from what I can see that these guys are "several levels" better.
As far as value goes, Bear probably has just as much as Spurgeon and Letang for two key reasons: cap hit and age. At 33, Letang doesn't have very many great years ahead - he's already sustained several serious injuries in his career - and his $7.25M cap hit until he's 35 is significant. Spurgeon has less upside than Letang and although he's a little younger, his $7.575M cap hit stretches to cover his 37-year-old season which is prohibitive for most teams.
It could be argued that Bear has at least equal trade value to Letang, greater value than Spurgeon and less value than Ellis.</div></div>
Stop using numbers and logic on Toronto fans. It's wasted. :)
