Bertuzzi and Barbashev
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Driedger18</b></div><div>Is Steeves really a "career" AHLer if he's only in his 2nd AHL season? 81pts in 100 GP. AT 22 Bertuzzi had played 127 AHL games so was he a career AHLer?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyIsMyPassion61</b></div><div>No comparison, Bertuzzi came into the league at age 21. Already spent 3 seasons in GR from the time he was drafted in 2013. Steeves is already 23 and in his 2nd season in the AHL. Yeah that's pretty much telling me that he's a career AHLer.</div></div>
Bertuzzi was drafted in ‘13 out of major junior and played parts of 3 seasons in the ahl. He also joined a wings team that was - well terrible.
Steeves went to university and was signed as a FA in ‘21; he’s spent 2 years in ahl and is putting up decent numbers. Leafs are a lot better team than the wings were in 2018-19.
Not saying Steeves is equivalent to bertuzxi but he’s not a terrible prospect, I’d rank him squarely in middle tier. Projects as bottom 6 player.
I agree the offer is too low; Bertuzzi is worth a 2nd imo or 3rd + Steeves.
There’s no inter divisional concern because:
1/ wings aren’t making the playoffs this year, so who cares where they trade him
2/ Bertuzzi is a FA; very doubtful Leafs can extend him so he won’t come back to haunt them next year or year after

Swap kerfoot and hyman and move engvall to 3C and you’ve got a top 6 with lots of skill and a very hard working checking line as well that’s shown it can be very effective so far</div></div>
I guess the question is whether Engvall can be an effective 3C...meaning offensively creative enough. Certainly Engvall has puck handling skill, good skating ability and works hard at both ends. Be a real shot in the arm for the Leafs if he can handle his new role....as 3C

Real quick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Driedger18</b></div><div>Why? Friedman said NJ is looking to deal one of pick 18 or 20 for a young(Under 26) player with term and team control. Johnsson fits that. And Ottawa has no goalie and needs to hit the floor so paying $1M in real cash but having it count as $5M on the cap sounds real nice to them.</div></div>
I think if Johnsson had a decent year and didn't get hurt it may fit the request nicely.
He had a bad year and a bad injury. His value has dropped because of this. NJ most likely declines.
I like the top six and the D core you have put together here.
I hate the bottom six.
The goalies are a wash IMO.
Not bad.

now what
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Driedger18</b></div><div>Fairs points both of you. Im dreaming a little as a leafs fan so i do acknowledge that it might be a bit ambitious to get Peeke. He's a good player and someone id like to add so maybe not a deal to be made. Now if you want to dump Savard we'd be interested in him as well but then what is that price?</div></div>
Savard is available as part of a package that brings back true, top-6 F talent, preferably someone who can be a 2C. A package that brings back, say, Nylander would be ideal. Again: a <strong><em>package</em></strong>. Not suggesting Savard for Nylander 1-for-1, as seems to be assumed every time I mention his name.

Retooling the core
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dzad96</b></div><div>That' exactly my issue with him tho, is that "he fits the current style". The style needs to change. It's proven year after year that the "leafs style" simply can not win in the playoffs. It just can't. And maybe changing the personnel and personnel type helps to change the "style".</div></div>
I think they need a blended style. Possession game but with more bite when they need it, and I think that the issues come down to team structure, lack of veteran leadership aside from Tavares, Spezza, Clifford, and Muzzin, and lack of physicality up and down the lineup, all of which are easy fixes, that can be addressed either internally or for cheap, so that you don't necessarily have to blow up the core 4 to fix (at least for now).

TOR - WSH deal
I think Jensen would be a great partner for Rielly. I was hoping that Anaheim or Toronto would sign him in the summer when he became a free agent and posted several team constructions doing that, but Washington saw him coming, acquired him at the trade deadline and then immediately signed him to his four-year deal. It's too bad he doesn't seem to have impressed either Washington fans or management.

Seems like one of the most logical suggestions (out of thousands entries) to add a RHD to the Leafs. Good thought Driedger.

I think this makes a lot of sense tbh. Jensen's defense is pretty solid, but the offense isn't great. My only concern is that he might not fit with Toronto's run-and-gun play style. But I still think it's a deal that could work well for both sides

I honestly would sooner trade Andersen next year and try to get Murray or Lehner. Andersen is going to be 31 on his next contract and I am not really feeling confident that its wise to give a goalie that much money period.

Muzzin / Holl
Dermott / Barrie</strong>
Sandin / Liljegren
That is a D core that I can get behind for sure.

California Dreaming
I'm really big on trying to bring in Sean Walker or Matt Roy from the kings. I think that the buying price would likely be higher. Small sample size from either player would maybe keep the price down, but if I were the Kings I'd be looking for a player like Kapanen from the leafs. I don't think either is getting moved for prospects, but i think that the Leafs could maybe do it for Bracco and a second, but that's a stretch.
RE: Ritchie - Why? All he does better than Johnsson is hit. Otherwise, I think Johnsson is able to get the puck back as effectively, and actually finish. Is the idea just to give some size up front while saving 2mio in cap?

Minimal Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigDog91</b></div><div>Brown is worth a 4th at most.
Ducks laugh at you and never pick up your call again. Also you do know that with LTIR u need to still be under the cap when season starts. So, for example I will not be able to sign marner till after the season starts. Also he will make more then 10 million.</div></div>
So take a 4th... his salary is now an obstacle. And it doesn't have to be to the Oilers, they just seem like the best fit to me. They desperately need wingers, he's played with McDavid before, he'd get the opportunity to succeed he's just not going to get here, and we know the Oilers have already tried to get him once.
Ducks aren't exactly in a position to laugh.
Actually you don't. This is exactly the same stunt the Leafs pulled with Horton and Lupul a couple years back. Horton we know is eligible for offseason LTIR, and Kesler can be dealt with in the ordinary way on the last day of training camp. <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq">https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq</a>
Marner *may* make more than 10M, but I'm not convinced. Kucherov makes $9.5M. Sure that's in a low tax state, but at the same time:
- Kucherov scores a ton of goals. Marner puts up assists like crazy, but goals get you more $$.
- Kucherov is at least the second-most important part of the Lightning, maybe even most important. Marner has at LEAST Matthews and Tavares ahead of him, maybe even behind Reilly since the Leaf's back end isn't as good as Tampa's.
- Florida has low tax, but in Toronto players can pack away far more in endorsement deals. And it's free of escrow. Not to mention the fact that players are paid in USD, which means more purchasing power in Canada. Monetarily it's a wash.
- Marner is local guy who presumably doesn't want to go anywhere else anyway.
- If at the end of the day they can't come to terms and someone decides to offer sheet, that's four 1st rounders and and extra $9M to spend. Leafs have all the leverage here.

Kapanen then. The Jets aren't selling off centres, even though they have guys who would return them value, they would be offering other assets from positions of depth. The Leafs only top 6 LW in the entire system is Mango. They have lots of depth guys, but no top 6 talents. On the right, they have Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, and Bracco in the minors for top 6 players. If they Leafs move a winger, it will be from the right, unless they get another, better LW (and even then...)

Liljegren was about to move up later this season actually as per Dubas who said after him getting injured that they planned on having him in NHL playing for a bit, I feel like he would make the team out of camp but I agree on Bracco tho. I love his game so there is a little bit of bias there :D

Small Moves for the Right Side
Yes, I, too, am tired of the "blockbuster" (i.e., team-buster) trades we see on CapFriendly all too often. The Toronto defense is currently 7th in goals against at the halfway point. Why does it need major changes? Jensen and Weegar are excellent and well-conceived depth and future moves (either one might replace Hainsey in 2019 or certainly by 2020). Also, take a look at Sean Walker. There's a certain local player the Kings might be willing to trade for him . . .
