Kesler was arguably the best Ducks forward in the playoffs. He was more valuable to the team than Getz. His contract isn't great, but what realistically what would be better? $1M/per year less? One year less? If I could go back, I would sign him to the exact same contract every time. He would have got more in free agency and the Ducks needed a 2nd line center. (Rakell wasn't ready)

In this scenario, Fowler is traded for Tatar and Sheahan.

If he agrees to waive his NMC, no reason to buy out a final contract year. Let him be your 6th or 7th defensmen.
If he waves (assuming the roster is as above) I would protect:
Getz
Perry
Kesler
Rakell
Tatar
Sheahan
Silf
Lindholm
Vats
Manson
Exposing: Despres, Cogliano and Vermette. Despres will be taken. Not great, but no way Rakell can be exposed.

Murray needs to sit down with Bieksa and say, "Look, we want to win a cup. You want to win a cup. If you waive your NMC, Despres probably gets picked up and you stay with us. If you don't agree to wave it, we will buy you out regardless if it doesn't help the cap situation because we can't lose Lindholm, Vats or Manson for nothing. Then you have limited options for playing in the NHL. Your choice."
I would rather keep Fowler. I realize everyone says he is bad, but I like his game. Unfortunately, Ducks need wingers and Stoner isn't going to get the right return. Neither the Wings or Ducks have too much power over their situations because they need to move players (Wings have too many forwards / Ducks have too many defensmen) so this trade works for both.
Vats is too valuable to move (same as Lindholm). His offensive production is going to increase and his salary is too good. A team would have to overpay to get him and would look bad on the Ducks to move a player who just signed an extension.

Just assuming the Red Wings need to make space for Mantha and Athanasiou. Ducks can't take on Nyquist's cap and Wings can't take Fowler without moving $4M to the Ducks.

Yeah, but in my opinion, this year, Lindholm will be better at keeping the puck out of his net and getting the puck to people who can score. The package you sent is an underpayment for Lindholm.

All of these trades to push for the Cup, but Lindholm is more valuable to the Ducks this year than Eberle and Stafford. Plus, if Gibson gets hurt (which he definitely might), you make your big push with Tokarski?
Better to keep Lindholm, keep Rakell and move Fowler or Stoner or both.

Anaheims part of the 3 way deal

Quoting: bones20

Ducks have far more Dmen depth than both Tbay and Kings. Ducks have a lot of solid 2-4 guys, but not a bonafide #1. If Lindholm is moved, Fowler or Vats would be the top defensemen and they are more suited to a #2 or #3. Doesn't matter that he isn't as physical. Doughty isn't overly physical. Duncan Keith isn't overly physical. Karlsson isn't overly physical. Lindholm drives position and limits opponents shots therefore he is a typical #1 in the NHL. I also expect Lindholm to put up more points this year. Moving him now would be selling him low and the return for him should be much greater. Almost no chance he doesn't resign with the Ducks.

No way that happens. Lindholm is being groomed to be the Ducks' future #1 and (hopefully) take the next steps to be a top 5 NHL defensmen.
Lindholm will be as important to the Ducks as Doughty to the Kings or Hedman to the Lightning.

Trading JVR
I think Ducks fans got excited when they saw Bieksa's name, but that would never happen because:
a) He has a NMC and won't waive to go to a rebuilding team. He wants to win a Cup.
b) Montour won't just be a throw in to take Bieksa's contract. The Ducks have a huge amount of defensive prospects, but they won't just start throwing them away in random deals for no reason.
c) The Ducks are hoping Ritchie can make huge steps this year and be a 1st or 2nd line LW. He is also cheaper and his ceiling is similar if not higher than JVR
d) Ducks will need Ritchie this year because he is cost controlled and JVR will be looking for $6M+ in his next contract

Final Moves
Ducks need to move Fowler for a 1st/2nd line LW without taking much salary back. Unfortunately, that doesn't work as well with NJ not having a Tatar-like player or not wanting to send a guy like Zacha.
If Ducks are strictly looking for a cap dump, I could see:
Fowler
Stoner
3rd
for
Reid
Bennett
1st

Lots of different combinations. If Reid can't solidify a spot on the second line, you could move Tatar over to LW and Silf moves to the second line.
Garbutt has also shown he can move up and down the lineup when needed. Overall, this is hopefully what the Ducks do. Need some more secondary scoring.

And if Lupul gets hurt, goes to IR, hopefully Kerdiles, Noesen or Leipsic can get called up (plus Garbutt moved up and down the roster last year).
For expansion, Ducks protect:
Getz
Simmonds
Rakell
Perry
Kesler
Silf
Cogs
Lindholm
Manson
Sami
Beg Bieksa to wave his NMC or buy him out
Vegas takes Lupul or Despres

A Different View
I see a lot of trades on here that are basically -
Good, young player on decent contract
for
Player you don't want with bloated contract with $1M retained
Couple of 3rd/4th liners
3rd/4th round pick
You could retain $2M-$3M on Staal and throw in a 1st round pick, and that still wouldn't get done.

fixed jvr trade bc limited knowledge
Lindholm is closer to what he will get paid, but still carrying too much salary (factoring in Thompson on IR).
The Ducks do save $2M in cash from Bernier's $4.150M cap hit, but they would still need $3M-$4M in cap space. Ducks can't retain any more salary on players.

Trade for JVR altered
Thompson will be on IR for a while so I'm guessing Wagner will hold down the 4th line center role.
Holzer should be the 7th defensemen. Ducks will need to move Stoner for whatever they can manage without taking salary back. 6th rounder from New Jersey?
Other than that, I'd easily make that trade.

Ducks
I don't think you trade Fowler straight up for a 1st/2nd line LW, but you can even out with a 2nd or 3rd pick. No reason to just give him away. For McQuaid's money and the Stoner buyout, you might as well pay Fowler his $4M.
Makes no sense to buyout a player, then trade Fowler for low, future picks, a prospect and a lesser defensemen all while saving less than $0.25M.
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/175703
I put that together. I don't think Leafs make that trade since JVR will be more valuable this year because wanting to shield some of the younger guys, but that is much closer to actual value and what is smart for the Ducks.

Fower for JVR
Ducks save $2M on Bernier so his cap hit is higher, but actual cash is lower so they hopefully will be ok with getting that close to the ceiling.
Main question would be if Ritchie can produce on the first line or if JVR moves up.
If Despres can stay healthy, that is a very solid defense.

Forward lines are brutal. If Ducks move Fowler, it should be for at least a 1st/2nd line LW.
Ducks already had Fleischmann. Don't see them bringing him back.
Not sure why they would wave Stoner, just to get Russell and McQuaid.
Don't see Manson up there. If last year is any indication, he will be partnered with Lindholm on the top line.

Quoting: alwaysnextyear

And a 6 million/year offer sheet warrants a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

For an offer sheet, if the offer is more than 5 years, you divide the total amount by 5 years regardless of actual terms. So for 8 years at $6M per you are at $48M total so divide by 5 gets you $9.6M/per year. I think that rule is in place to keep people from throwing extra years on the contract to keep the annual value low and not have to pay as many draft picks.

Trade with Sabres and Ducks
I know you are saying for the Ducks to trade his rights, but if Vancouver tried to sign an offer sheet for Lindholm at $6M for 8 years, the Ducks would get 4 x 1st round picks. Throwing a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and two bottom-six wingers isn't going to be very enticing. The Ducks could easily send Lindholm for an established 1st line LW and a pick. You are very much undervaluing Lindholm.
