Cap hell year one Fiala out but minimal off-season otherwise
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LNels31</b></div><div>Personally I feel if they trade for either an even better prospect or the first rounder. Wouldn’t be surprised if Dumba is shopped out. But I think it’ll all depend on how he would look at the year he is up for a new contract because the suter and parise cap hits go up further by another 2+ million. Does he want to cash in or does he want to stay on a friendly contract. But yes fiala is gone. Middleton will probably require 2+ million but he’s worth it! Kulikov was good during the season. He may be gone. But if they get rid of dumba I feel they’ll keep the rest of the defense.</div></div>
Agree with most if not all of that. My homerized opinion Is that they can probably resign Middleton for less than his value (whatever that may be) because he is just giddy anytime he’s with the media on how much fun he had getting traded here and how he lived playing with the team.
On the Fiala trade, other iterations I’ve done I’ve proposed the 2nd OA pick but NJ fans want to put you in the trunk for such an offense. I don’t know propspecta as well as a lot of folks on here (especially those who are not with Wild), but thinking BG would have some fun picking through and finding “his guys” and these two dudes seem to play heavy.

Fiala
I would expect Fiala will be willing to sign a long deal - why wouldn’t he? He bet on himself last off-season while going to arbitration hoping to cash in and then he went out and became a top 25 scorer in the league. I can’t see anyones agent not wanting to cash a long term contract on that success and avoid a down season, injury etc.
On the #5 overall maybe but #2 no way business…if the devils have talked themselves into him then why not? Or maybe they then swing a deal with to swap firsts with Ottawa? I’ll be curious to see how it all works out as I don’t actually see a ton of difference in value this draft between 2-5 or so. It certainly takes some patience to draft a guy like Cooley over plugging Fiala in right away. (I am not sure there is consensus on Cooley as the second best pick either, but we’ll see on that too)

The top ten protection makes no sense to me. That would push the puck to 2024 which would do nothing for the cap window they want to use this Fiala situation to ease. Devils would already be getting “top 10 protection” by not being the 2022 #2.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>So now you ask your assistant captain who has a M NTC to" Hurry up and sign an extension with Vancouver because we don't want you on our team. But hey if you don't sign with Canucks you are welcome back with the Wild next season. I want to be in on that conversation. Even at that I don't how Dumba really fits into Canucks cap.</div></div>
You have the sequence of events a bit wrong but I was agreeing with your point that the deal for a one year player wouldn’t work. I don’t follow the canucks, not sure how well Dumba fits. That is part of fun of these things is fans from other teams give feedback - and they have been other Vancouver fans who thought a 2nd round value for Dumba would work. The Wild can’t keep his salary. And if you read up top there are a bunch of things that have to happen for this - of any one of them don’t work then it all falls apart. The point of this scenario is sort of to illustrate how difficult staying competitive at least with this core will be over these three years of cap hell Suter/Parise buyouts.

If I am Vegas, I wouldnt give you a 1st & 2nd for Hartman unless you were taking a large dollar contract that was unmovable... so just no
If I am NYI, I would say nope
If I am Arizona, I say other offers are better, call me when you have at a minimum a 1st in there and dont ask me for a 3rd.</div></div>
On the Chychrun one, what do you think his value is? I can’t possibly see this 1st, plus top prospect plus current NHLer, can you?

Robertson as the good player, Knies as top prospect (less value than Krebs) , and a 1st. They add a 1st to compensate for Knies and for Mrazek cap dump.
I know Robertson is still a prospect, but that's as close a good player as they can give, who could compare to Tuch's value at the time.
Maybe Toronto needs to add Kerfoot for more cap space if needed.</div></div>
I admittedly haven’t watched much coyotes hockey, but is Chychrun that good? It’s all upside with the hopes on a better team he blossoms? I’ve thought in other posts that he was with pursuing (Wild fan) but if that value is anywhere near accurate, I can’t imagine there would be many suitors.

I think there is the precedent angle here to say they should get way more. But I get the sense the devils love the idea of Fiala. Do they let the fortune in the lottery move them out of contention for him? I don’t think Guerin will have a shortage of bidders…so this #2 overall let’s the devils get their guy. You are probably right though.

Its a fair point (albeit a tad heavy handed), they’d probably give up a lot of goals and that is bad. The crackhead GM rationale here is to be grooming Wallstedt and looking at these guys to see if either can be competent #2s. BG would probably take a lot of heat for this - I just think the MAF team friendly $stuff is foolhardy and I get the sense Talbot is really pissed.

Overly optimistic Wild offseason
Some interesting stuff here for sure. I fear that the devils trade is a tad (a lot ) too optimistic. I actually think NJ was a solid trade partner before they lucked out in The lottery and they’ll think that they should get way more value for #2 than # 6 (or wherever they were expected to pick). And understandably so. 2-6 in this draft to my novice eyebseem to be a bit of beauty in the eye of the beholder and you could possibly be just as happy at 6 as at 2.
The Hartman thing is interesting…he probably looks better to the rest of the league right now than he does to those inside the building. And he has a great contract. So a team like Vegas actually might make some real sense. That said there’s a team that wears red and green who also need good contracts, and Hartman took less money to be with this team - shipping him off may be a little dirty.
You and I must have very different opinions of D-lo as I think he had exactly one good game (his first after the trade when he was ALL OVER the ice, just flying and even scored). I’d rather see any number of our younger prospects get a crack.
I think Kulikov is Dumba, for roughly 1/3 of the cost and less frequently injured. So that could work.
I can’t see Fleury and Talbot co existing.
We’re all thinking about next year already…what a freaking dud.

The Minnesota trade feels pretty far off. Nowhere near enough value for Fiala with not even a first rounder. Additionally, they stand pat on Talbot unless they can get MAF on a Talbot sized team friendly deal. They can’t have and don’t want a 6.5m G signed for many years as they believe Wallstedt is their future.

What people need to understand about Wild is the historically terrible cap situation they have to manage. They have to get rid of salary, not take more on. For that reason I can’t see any scenario where they would take on Drouin, ir any player making 5m

Been doing a few of these myself to try and sort out what is even possible. I think you're still a player short and out of cap space. And even that is with a discounted deal for flower that we'd all wish for but know he probably wouldn't do. Keep doing these, readers like myself enjoy seeing different takes on it. If Guerin can field a competitive team through these three years, he'll deserve exec of the year awards. Having 15% less to spend on your team than everyone else (and gets worse in years 2 & 3) is no joke. I sure hope Fiala fetches more in return if we have to lose him.

I know. Russo has stated quite clearly that Fiala is gone in the offseason. But I don't know how you trade a 25 year old top 25 scorer in the league who is clearly ascending. And Russo also didn't have any idea that Goligoski was going to get extended....so just saying I dig that guy, and he is plugged in, but there are still some surprises at times.

Probably right that zuccarello won't be traded...but something has to give and if you make decent money and/or you're on the wrong side of 30 you find yourself an easy target to get traded. The buyouts are going to rip out a chunk of what is a really fun team to watch. With each passing game losing Fiala seems a non starter. Dumba alone leaving won't be enough cap room.

The only reason to trade Fiala is the cap nightmare- so any trade to be possible this summer I am imagine would have to be a haul of picks and prospects....no NHLers with any significant contract. This one probably wouldn't have a chance.

Cap hell year 1 -take 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>futurehofer</b></div><div>1. If you look, Tuch wasn't traded to protect Brodin. We used our 3 defensive slots in the expansion draft on Brodin, Spurgeon, and Suter. He was traded to protect Dumba, Scandella (who was needed for the Foligno trade about a week later), and Staal by getting Vegas to select Haula. I was personally against the move at the time, not because of a love for Tuch, but because I wasn't a believer in Dumba long term since he was all shot and not much defensively. Since Dumba tore his pec in 2018, his slapshot is basically gone and his offense has gone down. The defensive blunders he was supposed to have grown out of still haven't gone away even though he's now about to turn 28 and has 518 regular season games to his name.
2. Yes, Brodin is that good. When paired with someone who isn't a liability defensively, he's able to add a fair amount of offense to his game in addition to his elite defense. Statistically, Brodin and Dumba together have a 54.73% xGA% and 54.03 SCF%, Brodin without Dumba has a 56.49% xGA% and 57.56% SCF%, and Dumba without Brodin has a 45.73% xGA% and 42.33 SCF%. In other words, Brodin does well with anyone, but Dumba is garbage without Brodin there to babysit him.</div></div>
Quick...erase that response as we need someone to give a nice return in a trade this summer! :). I agree with the shot dropoff, but am less pessimistic on his blunders reduction...I think he's actually become more consistently reliable than three years ago. But agree on how you recall this, and definitely how you view Brodin. I suspect that Vegas would have taken Dumba though as I think he was viewed as the more valuable player at that point, and Tuch would possibly still be a Wild player today. And I wouldn't have to have Buffalo fans saying I'm a fool for trying to trade for him in an online, imaginary, armchair GM forum.

I think you need to fit three more salaries under the cap, which is one reason this is really hard to do. That probably means you have to find nearly $3m of this roster salary to shed. It's not easy. I expect multiple moves this summer by Guerin to try and make this all work.

No troll or stir. Just trying to think through the hard choices Guerin has if he wants to keep Fiala. I think to keep him, there has to be multiple moves. I don't pretend to know them all. Seems like folks think Ek would fetch more. And I have a hard time seeing the GREEF line being broken up. But something has to give...the team unfortunately won't look the same next season.
