I think the Muzzin deal just proved you don't need to give up top talent for a very good Dman.

Leafs are screwed
Huge overpay on Kappy. Thats almost how much he'd get for 6 years (Dvorak contract)
Comparable contracts put him right in around 2-3@2.5-3
Add a year and I think that is about top end for Marner.
I think you get 8 out of that Matthews deal, but I could live with 7 on that aav.
Johnsson likely gets a bit more. (3-4@2.25-2.75)
Sandin will not play next year. Re-sign Oz (or other depth) to play the 3RD until liljegren gets called up mid season (think like 1@.950-1.000).
Sparks likely gets the mac contract (2@.850).
And that should just be enough to make it all fit.
And yeah expect a cap of 83. Could go a bit higher but yeah.
Remember that the marlies play in Toronto. Leafs can get away with a 21 or 22 man roster if they need to.

Not ruling this out as an option...but Marleau spent 18 years with San Jose and was deliberating a 2yr offer from them when the Leafs came in with 3 years (<a href="https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/880838198062186497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tsn.ca%2Fmarleau-considering-two-year-deal-from-sharks-1.793452" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/880838198062186497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tsn.ca%2Fmarleau-considering-two-year-deal-from-sharks-1.793452</a>)
It was believed the third year, along with how Toronto performed after matthews, marner and nylander's rookie year, persuaded him to uproot his family.
Now...things may have definitely changed...Maybe his body feels beat up...or that he's lost a step and can't contribute the way he expects himself to....so he's ready to hang em up this offseason...but I'm not convinced this is what caused Dubas to pull the trigger.
For me it seemed to coincide more with contract talks with Matthews and the news coming out his camp is pushing for a 5yr contract...if that number sees Matthews AAV under $11m (which Dregger was on leafs lunch today suggesting $11m AAV would be the high end on a 5yr term for Matthews)...then maybe that's the difference Dubas needed to feel confident he could make it all work for next year

Parayko is to the Blues what Rielly is the the Leafs. Young top pairing d-man on a good contract. RIelly has a higher offensive acumen and Parayko more defensive. I don't think we'd be interested in taking a bottom pairing d-man who's overpaid by $1m, a late first round pick, a good prospect and a young top 6 winger for Morgan.
Even if the Blues go full re-build mode...you keep a Parayko unless the offer is too good to pass up.</div></div>
Seeing as there are many mixed opinions that may mean the trade is even just neither team wants to move the pieces involved. From where I stand, this would be very worth it for Toronto since I personally believe Parayko is a top 10 defenseman. Imagine him playing with Rielly, and offensive and a defensive young top of the line defenseman would be unreal

haha...I don't need to imagine...I go back to the world cup when Rielly and Parayko were the top pairing d-line for team North America and I fell in love at that time.
So...value wise might be close for Parayko...but why would St. Louis bother unless the offer knocks their socks off?

So I had to look this up but Marleaus contract will always count against the cap until it expires, so if your trading it to Phoenix you will have to send at least a 2nd round pick with him for them to take it.
No team is just going to take on $6.25 million to help the Leafs out

Trade him and see how he becomes better than Parayko on other team.. Sandin is top-4 D in 2 years and to compare him.. guy like Duncan Keith is comparison. Shows why other fanbases call Leafs fans stupid when they post trade ideas like this. Nothing against you. Its not your idea this trade. But for those people who proposed this.. it wont happen. Would I want Parayko? SURE! Heck yes I would but not if it costs Sandin. Liljegren? Fine.. Sandin is great two way defenceman with a lot of defensive and offensive upside.. Liljegren is offensively great but I would rather trade him as he is more replaceble.

and that's based on what exactly? Why is it people think that if they sign a 5 year deal that means they're out the door in 5 years....all it means is that the leafs will be shelling out a higher cap hit for them when they get to negotiate a 3rd contract while still in their mid 20s.
If they both push for 5 years and it gives the Leafs some cap flexibility in the interim...there's an argument it makes sense for both sides

Nylander for Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I'll accept any lashings that come my way for this...but I'll argue that Marner has contributed more to Tavares' success than the other way around.
Last season Marner started the season with bozak and JVR....JVR ends up with a career high in goals and Marner gets relegated to the 4th line with Matt Martin. January 2018 he gets promoted to a line with Kadri...a guy who tallied 0 points in December and had 19g, 13a after the switch.
Tavares...who has never topped 38 goals...has 30 already this season just past the half way point.
IMO Marner has been a runaway train as far as separating himself from Nylander since Jan 2018.
That being said...Nylander hasn't gone from being a 60+ point top pairing winger to "overpaid and not good". At a $6.5m AAV everyone in the offseason would have thought that was a big win for the Leafs. So what..his cap hit is $500k higher...get over it and stop trading him away for short sighted returns.
Anyone who draws conclusions based on a 20 game window...when the guy missed camp and 2 months of the season...and quickly ignore the previous 3 previous seasons when you were happy to lock him up for $6.5m needs to give their head a shake</div></div>
Yikes. Tavares is 2nd in goals and 6th in points over the last 8 years in the NHL. They both play well together but giving the credit to Marner is a bit of a homer move.

Thread:
Nylander for Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>For the record: I am not suggesting a Nylander trade because of the way he is playing. It is because of the Tavares contract and the way Marners is playing. When Tavares came in everyone recognized how hard it was going to be to keep the big three young guys. Most figured Nylander would get about 6.5 and marner about 7.5-8. Marner has now exploded and is likely getting 9+ (many thinking 10+ though I strongly disagree). We've now added Tavares and likely paying marner and Nylander about 3-4 million more than expected. It leaves no money for defense.
Either one of Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Tavares, Marleau is traded, or the Leafs D will have to be Rielly, Zaitzev and a bunch of guys on ELCs.
It's the cap not the player</div></div>
I don't disagree with anything you've written here at all...but for me...the question is more...
Do the leafs need to trade one of those guys for D-help now? Or can you get them all signed long term...take your lumps on D next year...and address the blueline in 2020-21 when you have a lot more information....
The core will be locked up long term
Marleau off the books
Sandin/Liljegren more seasoned and we'll know better if they can be regular contributors and how effective they might be as pros
There's this belief that the window to win is right now. I don't subscribe to that belief. If you get all of these guys signed for 5+ years they will all be playing their prime years in Toronto. IMO, if they make do this year and next year with what they have (or cheap alternatives) they are in a way better position in 2020 and beyond than if they move away major pieces to address the blueline now.
If you could have Nylander playing like a top line winger again...signed for another 4 years along with matthews, marner, rielly, kadri, tavares, dermott, andersen...and then add Pietrangelo as a UFA for free in 2020 when you have more cap to work with....are you willing to sacrifice never making it past the 2nd round the next two years? Or do you lose one or more of those key players now...in hopes that it increases the chances for a cup this year or next? For me, I'd rather wait

Don't forget Anaheim defense.
Im just saying the media does influence the ACGM If they would come out and say a source in Edm says they could be looking to trade mcdavid oh he be first line with Tavares and Marner. lol</div></div>
I can say with certainty that a Toronto-St. Louis deals were discussed by the 'regulars' on here going back to last TDL and into the summer. Nylander for Parayko discussed a lot as well as Pietrangelo. Like I said...for the guys on here pretty much daily...we're all looking to see what teams match up as potential trade partners and engage in discussions to see if there's a mutual fit. A guy like Kypreos suggesting Pietrangelo is available and Toronto is interested is kind of 'old news' to the regulars on here...but definitely brings a lot of new or less frequent posters to the site and getting the discussion fired up on a larger scale.
But in June/July we were on her talking about Nylander/Kapanen and Parayko/Pietrangelo....it's interesting looking back because in the summer most were saying Pietrangelo>>Parayko and Nylander>> Kapanen and today you have a lot of people feeling strongly that the opposite is in fact true.
<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/151525">https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/151525</a>
<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/147848">https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/147848</a>
that's just two examples of a thread talking about Toronto and St. Louis hooking up on a winger-d-man trade.
Either way.....the enthusiasts on here are almost always way ahead of the media-heads in matching up potential trade partners

Don't know if it's true or not...but Media leaked that St. Louis was pitching Pietrangelo + for Nylander before he re-signed and the leafs turned it down.
It's really not rocket science what we, as fans, do on here..nor what hockey analysts do on the air....assess what holes competing teams have....look at what teams are not competing this year, and from that group determine who has the ability to fill those holes with players who are near the end of their deals or might not be considered part of their future any more.
That's why 90% of the leaf ACGM teams on here have Pietrangelo or someone from Carolina's back end getting traded here.

Nylander for Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>both. if we are talking tdl. thats a huge bonus to pay</div></div>
Ya...agreed...it's completely unrealistic for a team to acquire...or for the Leafs to trade Nylander this season. Acquiring teams have to take a big AAV on this year's cap for it to work...and the leafs basically would have gone through all the drama and negotiating to simply give up on the guy after 3 months of play.
That doesn't make him worthless tho...just makes a trade by this TDL completely unrealistic, IMO.
It's fine if you never liked him that much and don't want him included in a deal for Pietrangelo...that's an opinion you are completely entitled to. Leaf fans react similarly if Vancouver tries to fleece us in a deal for Tanev...or recently Edmonton trying to pawn Russel off on us...
My only argument is that...anyone who is judging his entire worth on what's gone down the last 2 months isn't taking a fair assessment of the entire situation.
