I'll admit, I'm not sure. Hopefully someone can give you a better answer than me. The only line he spent over 30 minutes on with last season was with Byfield and Kupari -- two other centers, so it stands to reason he has experience with it. Good experience or bad experience, I'm not sure. Gonna look into it a bit more.
Originally, I was gonna include trading Pageau in this post. Between him, Beau, Bailey and Palms he has the largest contract, but perhaps his play style and reputation would be enough for another team to take him off our hands more readily than they would, say, Bailey which is the popular one on here. I doubt Lou makes him available, but that could free up a C spot for Vilardi and a W spot for Bailey or Bellows

Offseason contd
I wouldn’t give Dufour for him but I think Dadonov would be a great fit with the Isles. 50% retained would be nice too since you offered…
Maybe a 2nd that has a chance to turn into a 1st based on playoff success and a young guy like Bellows?? Extra late pick for retention?

Man I'd love Milano...
Sandin I'm not so sure, I do worry about some kind of retaliation next year when Barzal and Wahlstrom are up. An OS seems a little ballsy for Lou anyways. That said, if we could swing a trade for him, we'd be set on D for years....

He’s scored 40 one time four years ago.
He’s not a bad player by any means but he’s too one dimensional for the money he’s going to get. Big player who plays small, doesn’t drive play well and is a net negative on defense. I would rather let Wahlstrom continue to develop, because it seems like he has the potential to do all of those things better than Laine, if he doesn’t already. He’s also going to cost significantly less for years to come

I know a lot of people are, but I don’t think you can blame Lou for “chasing.” It wasn’t about the money for Gaudreau, so I imagine we truly were in it until the very end. Now if you want to question how appealing of a destination the Isles are for free agents, that’s another discussion, but I don’t think you can fault the FO for trying to wrangle the best player on the market.
I know that’s not the point of the post, but just something I wanted to put out there lol

Yes and no.
Defense was the biggest problem and, on paper, I think it looks good right now. Hopefully Romanov and Dobson are signed ASAP, although I’m sure Lou is gonna keep us in the dark until September again with them.
Forwards I’m not sure. Almost everyone underperformed last season, including the young guys we were all clamoring for more of. As for the older guys, obviously I’d like to move off of Bailey or Pageau, but it seems like those moves could be more trouble than they’re worth at this point. At least for this year, I hope that Lambert can find a way to utilize those guys more effectively than Trotz was and hopefully give trading them another shot next offseason after good seasons. The 4th line I think is a lost cause ngl and I hope someone in coaching/management recognizes that early and adjusts accordingly. I like how Ross played for the most part last season and I think he brings a little more jump to that line than Martin and Clutterbuck do rn and obviously Bellows deserves a chance to build off the progress he made last season.
So really idk, it could go either way. Maybe we’re still trying to add. But in truth, I think we addressed last season’s biggest problem and that gives me some hope. But we’ve done nothing to address the biggest problem of the Lamoriello Era, which is goal scoring. Maybe that issue can be addressed internally next season, but its a bit of a gamble.

That’s not really a lot going back to the Hawks no? Late 1st, two more picks likely outside the top 60 and two pending UFAs who probably aren’t bringing back anything significant if we manage to trade them. Plus CHI is retaining…

I get why MTL wouldnt given his Offense hasnt developed yet and you pay people for what they earned not what they will earn.
If every team signed deals like that we'd all be stuck with Rick Dipietro deals</div></div>
Well in that case, he probably won’t cost more than other guys we wanted. And besides, I’d rather pay a 22 year old that kind of money than a 32 year old of the same caliber. Still a win for us in my book

This is a really solid deal for us imo, Romanov is already a good defender, is really young, probably gonna be cheap and has lots of potential. This hopefullly fills a need for years to come and could help us as soon as next season, which an 18 year old taken 13th overall wouldn’t be able to

I mean two years from now if McDonagh continues to age, I’d argue any one of them is a better bet to be a productive member of a team’s top 4 than him. Girard is probably significantly more expensive and who knows if he’s ever available, but I’d happily pay the price considering the impact he could have, now and in the future.
But like you said, what’s done is done. Glad the Isles passed

Genuinely curious where you you think you can get the bolded</div></div>
McDonagh’s overall impact over the last three years or so has been kinda meh. I know he’s got the two rings and his value is probably more than any public numbers are gonna show, but I just think as far as his age and recent production has been, it would’ve been a bad fit for the Isles.
I’m really interested in either Sam Girard if COL would move him or Brett Kulak as UFA a if they wouldn’t. It also sounds like Nic Hague and Oliver Kylington could be available as RFAs, although those are probably a little more unlikely. But I’d take all of those guys over McDonagh and I think will add as much or more value over the next four years as him

I do like McDonagh and he’s a proven winner, but I think there are better, younger, cheaper options available that we could get without shooting ourselves in the foot cap-wise. I definitely wouldn’t hate this and I feel like that’s kinda the best Tampa is gonna be able to get for him, but I’d rather look elsewhere personally

Doing the isles as a rangers fan
Dobson probably isn't going to get that much on a deal that walks him to UFA I think (unless there's an OS of course). I think they'll bridge him on a 2-3 year deal with a high salary in the final year so he's got a high QO when he's up again but a lower cap hit until then. That frees up space for us to keep Palms, who was arguably our 2nd best forward in the second half last season. Really hoping he can put a productive 82 games together next year.
Puljujarvi and Kulak are great additions, both high on my own wishlist
